Has anyone here ever tried advertising their websites offline, as in local classified ads and the like?

In some niches, especially in the hottest and most highly competitive markets, I have found offline advertising to be particularly effective. Here is an excellent resource for offline classified advertising:

    Nationwide Newspapers Advertising

Also consider writing relevant articles for the small/regional newspapers and trade magazines. You can certainly make a killing in any market with just a few well-targeted articles.

To be able to track what's working offline it's a good idea to setup either a sub-domain or sub folder e.g. local.yourdomain.com

This will give you a clearer idea if this offline advertising is working, otherwise you analytics will just tell you stats for your domain name and you won't be able to differentiate.

I find local press works for me, and even local newsletters from churches/ organisations all depends on the product and audience.

You can sometimes pick up print advertising very cheap if you are willing to consider the spots that nobody else wants.
