Should I hire the same person that designs my site to develop my site?

Hi there,

Just getting ready to post a job for construction of my site (wordpress, simple site for the sale of a weight loss supplement - nothing crazy) and I was wondering if I should hire one team / person to do the entire site (design and development) or whether or not I should hire separate companies / individuals?

Any and all advice is very much appreciated.

I hate to give a vague answer, but it depends on who you're considering. In my experience, people are usually best at either designing or programming--rarely is someone really good at both. It's just two different skillsets.

But companies may have people who do both and individuals may partner with someone to do the other part.

On the other hand, you mentioned Wordpress and said you just need a simple site. In that case, I think it's much more likely you can find one person to do it all (and do it well) because a lot of Wordpress sites are built on a template or customized template.

I agree with this totally. You could have someone who is great at web design but not so good at developing the site and vice-versa. Just make sure you realize who it is that you are considering when hiring someone. Ask them if they are truly a designer or a developer or both.

      Tracy is spot on here.

I can code the heck out of WordPress and make it do things you wouldn't have thought it could do. That said I do all my best work when I have a PSD from a real designer to provide the apperance of the site.

I can do simple design, but my designs are never as good as a real designer's are and I have yet to meet a designer who knows the code like I do.

I've designed a lot of simple WordPress sites anyways, because few people seem to understand the difference between design and development. But right now about half of my development work is for a company that does design and contracts me to turn their designs into working sites. It is some of my best work because i'm free to turn their vision into working code and don't have to play with graphics and figure out what something should look like.

Did you ever notice that “author” is the root of the word “authority“?

i would prefer to hire same person for the job if both of you know each other expectation well. When you look for new person to outsource, the most challenging task is to let them know your expectation..

As long as the person is reputable and says they can do both then I'd hire one person.

Site design and site development are actually separate skills. A site designer may not really know the technical details involved in coding your site. This may get you in trouble later on.

So before you let the site designer develop your site, make sure they have the technical chops to do so.

A lot of times designers work with developers/programmers. There are many types of designers. Some are pure graphic/user interface types, with no real programming skills. Maybe some basic HTML. While others have a fair amount of technical chops, that may stop just shy of rivaling hobbyist programmer types.

Before you go anywhere near a designer, you should be speaking with an SEO expert or Internet Marketer. Its pointless having a great looking site, if it just sits there gathering dust.

Avoid having one person do everything.

They'll either do one thing fantastically, or lots of things horribly.
