Is email still effective?

by new guy 15 replies
Just thinking outloud here. I know the money is in the list and all that, but I had a guy unsubscribe tonight and his comment was "my email is out of control" and so I started wondering if that is the case. I know I personally delete more email than I read from my inbox, and i don't just mean the spam, I mean from other marketers or somethign I have bought int he past. I know we have to follow up and all that but is it getting a bit overboard? Sure, there are a couple I read regularly. And don't get me wrong, it isn't all crap either. I mean most of it is good, solid info and likely comes from members of these forums but there is still only so many hours in a day and you just can't read it all.

Thoughts?

In the internet marketing niche you have to be very aware that in many cases you're just one of MANY emails your prospect will be getting every day.

That's why you have to work so hard to be sure you provide real value in your emails in the IM niche.

But outside that niche email marketing is underutilized.

Many niches have NO ONE doing any kind of organized, strategic email follow up.

In these niches email marketing isn't dead...it's barely even got started.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

Just wanted to start some dialogue. I agree with most of the points here. Especially the one about email in other markets other than IM. Amazing how many businesses still don't get it.

Email is perhaps the MOST effective marketing technique bar none, just as long as you provide valuable content to a targeted market and build a trusting relationship with your subscribers.

E-mail marketing is still very much alive, if you use it right. People are a lot more wary of spam today, but if you provide value for them and give a reason for them to stay subscribed you'll get good results on the odd occasion when you do sell.

I'm not too sure about email marketing's effectiveness anymore. There was a thread at the CYN where the topic was pretty similar - I forget the heading now - but my gosh I was shocked to see the number of people who totally ignored email. Trashed! It made us all wonder whether it was still effective. How about trying a provocative heading on here to find out whether or not people here read the plugs that arrive in their inbox?

Yes it is still effective, but remember dont follow up your subscriber too tight, keep at least 3 day apart from each follow-up message (My recommended)

Well, I guess spamming doesn't work as well as it used to. But I've got nearly 800,000 subscribers that are buying my products regularly.

Still the most effective and powerful strategy, long-term and short-term.

Everything should lead to the building of your client base.

That's the end. The "means" can take many other forms (SEO, affiliates, ads, PPC, viral, etc)

I ignore tons of email too, but I pay attention to the 20%-30% that catch my attention and 'forces' me to open them.

There are various reasons why I open an email:

                  1. Outrageous/benefit-driven subject line

                  2. Trusted source with authority in the market

                  3. Provides value

If you provide insane value in the beginning of the relationship, you are bound to get higher open rates because people remember you and will open your emails further down the road.

You can provide crazy value at the start and people will still be opening your emails years down the road because they remember the value you provided.

And you need to constantly remember them of this value by giving them free gifts, free reports, awesome products etc.

Above all, the subject line and your name will determine how well your emails do. Spend lots of time crafting your subject line. Spend like 80% of your time on that and your emails will get the desired result.

Create a swipe file and read up on copywriting. Become a copywriting maven. Copywriting skills and traffic generation will make the biggest difference in your email marketing.

Internet trends and spam catchers tend to point email effectiveness as dropping. What you really need to do is get or build a relevent email list with people who are genuinely interested.
