My warning about trusting the so-called experts...

Like many here I run a Wordpress blog.

I have bought some scripts and themes for it.

However one theme didn't install as it should have. It resulted in an error message saying my site had expired!

So I handed over a new set of login details to the customer support person expecting them to fix it.

Nope!

They couldn't fix it.

And to make matters worse, they left their theme ON so for more than 17 hours my entire site showed an error message!

So my lesson is NEVER hand over the keys to your virtual castle unless you're doing live webchat or similar.

      Hi Jonathon

It is a real pain when something like that happens. What I would advise you do however is create regular backups of your wordpress site, especially before you make changes like installing new themes or plugins.

Do a search on google for wordpress backup or cloning software, you'll have to pay for the better ones but it's worth it!

I always recommend Backup Buddy. It's just an awesome piece of kit for Wordpress site cloning.

I think it really helps to have a DIY attitude in this business. And most do. I don't feel comfortable with anything unless I have a basic understanding of how it works and how to keep it running.

Well, these types of things are not black and white.

A theme may work most of the time but you may have a particular plugin that is screwing up their theme. It isn't exactly easy to debug these type of things.

Of course, some people think we should just know everything and be able to fix the problem by clicking our heals and saying "I wish I was at the bar."

Funny. Paid themes have always been the most trouble for me too...
