I bid on a website. Won the bid.
The guy is from Inida, wants me to Western Union the money.
He is willing to go ahead and transfer the domain before I pay.

What should I do to protect myself in this situation. The site is supposedly making about $250 a month. I have seen screenshots, but do I need to verify using another method? Any advice would be appreciated.

I know this probably isnt the right forum but I need help ASAP.

In all fairness, these were the sort of questions that should have been asked before you started bidding. No use looking back now though

You should ask for access to his analytics account- that way you can verify the level of traffic going to the site and have a look at the likelihood of making the claimed income. Even better would be if you could gain access to his adsense/clickbank/whatever account so you could verify the income outright.

Hope this has been of some use to you.

I thought the site I was buying from verified all of this, but upon further reading, they do not. Thanks for your help.

Exactly, all the questions and clarification NEEDS to be asked before putting your bid.

I am also a flipper and this actually pissed a seller, when he clearly mention to clear all doubts BEFORE bidding.

Ask for keywords as well and if the site is getting search engine traffic for competitive terms as well. You can check their CPC levels through adwords keyword tool and have an idea.

If he is willing to transfer the domain before you pay there is no issue. You should have checked whether all his facts were correct before bidding really.

  • The fact that he is willing to transfer the Domain name and such to you in advance is showing good faith on his part. He has also got to assume that you are not going to scam him. ( For what it's worth, culturally speaking, I have found from experience that Indian folks "tend" to be be pretty honest. It's embedded in their culture.)

In business there is always risk. Each party in a transaction needs to do their own due diligence to their own satisfaction even if there is a broker (middleman) involved. I hope that when I buy something on eBay that it's the real deal. There is a risk there too. When a customer buys something through any website including yours or mine they have to, if their smart, check things out. Nuff said.

From what you are saying and with the details you have provided you are probably OK. Remember just because you are buying a producing site you still aren't going to be able to coast with it. I have some and have had some sites at that level and I still have to work as hard or harder than some folks with sites making 4-5 figures a month.

I don't think I'm saying anything you don't already know.

Good Luck and always be a learnin!

How much did you pay for the site??

If you paid $500 and the site is supposed to be making $250 per month chances are its not.

I agress with Ricky, there are many dishonest site owners that tend to over exaggerate their earnings, trying to con people into buying their site

i backed out of the deal. I'm 95% sure it was a scam. He kept pushing me to go ahead and do the WU and saying "i'll give you much help". I know my instincts were right on this one. He also told me the key word he ranked for and I used key word tool and he was on page 1 but there were no searches for the term.

Sadly, it sounds as if you are the scammer (unintentionally). Bidding on a website without doing your homework and then pulling out afterwards.

You'll know next time - do your homework before bidding.

Seems a bit unfair- he hasn't scammed anyone at all. He didn't take the website (presumably).

A scam would be intentionally defrauding the seller- which certainly doesn't seem to be the case here.

However, this should be a case study to people who may in the future be bidding on websites- always, always, ALWAYS do your due dilligence before making a bid.

I agree, I learned my lesson here. But if you want to be technical, the guy was trying to sell me the site 3 hrs before the auction ended, and I was out bid. This was yet another reason I dont believe the legitimacy of this guy. Thanks for all your help on this.
