What size ads and which positions are most effective?

INTERNET MARKETING

I was just about to buy in to a set of WP themes when I noticed that the designer has only allowed for 125 X 125 sidebar ads, as well as 486 X 60 banners.

From what I've been told, banners on top died a long time ago and are the least effective ads of all.

The marketers I've discussed this with suggest that skyscrapers and square ads, immediately beneath the header, top right or top left, are best. What say you?

What size ads are best, and where should they be for maximum effect?

Above the fold but not right at the top. Around the height the first google search results show on Google.com. Some good ad sizes are definitely the square sizes such as 300 x 250.

Text links are also really helpful sometimes you just have to identify that banner advertising site should be of your niche type to advertise and then go according to the traffic at the site for posting a banner.

336x280 and 728x90 ads are the most effective and receive good amount of clicks.
