eBook creation tip: Acrobat.com converts 5 Word docs to PDF free each month

Working on a strategically important ebook, we realized that Macintosh Office's Save as PDF bloated a 250K .doc file to 2.4 megabytes. Although we have a license for Adobe Acrobat it's a pain to use. Remembered that Acrobat.com had some kind of conversion service. Sure enough you can sign up and get 5 conversions a month free. We did it and the resultant PDF was a trim 164K.

  • It's a while since I checked but I'm pretty sure you only get 5 conversions in total. After that you need to sign up.

  • My Mac creates unlimited free pdf documents. This function is found in the print options.

I use Open Office. Just create the doc in Open Office Writer instead of Word and save as pdf. Works beautifully.

    • Same here. On a somewhat related note, there's also a site where you can convert PDFs to Word documents for free.

I had to use this the yesterday to edit a PDF document that I'd lost the original Word file to. It works pretty well. I noticed a couple of formatting errors, but much better than having to re-type the whole report.
