How to sell an email list? (130k subscribers, good niche)

I'm curious...

I have an email list of 130k subscribers, in a specific niche kind of related to making money. The average Adsense earnings per click in this niche is around $.50 cents, with a dollar a click not being uncommon.

Emails blasts to the list get an average of 2%-5% CTR. Along with the list I have a successful editorial system, a good writer/content producer, and a squeeze page that gets up to 60% opt-in rates for targetted traffic. I also have a few blogs in this niche, and a successful forum as well.

What is this list worth?

What about the biz as a whole?

How would you go about selling it?

How would you go about pricing it?

If it is targeted, then great. It really depends on how responsive they are. You judge its worth by sending an affiliate product offer to them once. From what you earn by that e-mail blast, you will be able to tell how much it is worth at that point.

The list is very targetted around a specific niche that is NOT internet marketing, or even making money at home. It is more spefic than that.

The way I do things, I generally send a newsletter to the list weekly, with links to content. The content has adsense on it...I generally earn anywhere between $500-$1200 per blast.

I've never done any product dev for this, but I do have 500+ articles on the topic. I'm thinking if someone wanted to take this over, and do a product launch, they could make a killing.

      Futher thoughts on pricing?

Well it depends what your subscribers signed up to. If you stated you'd never sell or rent their details then you can't sell the list. Next problem is YOUR list is worthless to someone else as it's your list and your relationship with your list.

ps. I've no idea why someone would want to sell their list especially of this size??!

I had a list of 5K subscribers in the niche of internet marketing (of close 5K isn't nearly as big as 130K, but it's still something big 5K) and I decided to sell it because I didn't have enough time to nurture the list because of other IM projects I had. I also needed extra money to invest into other IM projects and decided to sell the list, because the money I got for the list, was equal to three months of nurturing the list.

Quite possibly nothing, to anyone else, Jacob.

What exactly did they opt in to? Did they know they might be "sold"?

I do not understand why you would want to sell such a huge list. Why not find warriors or others interested in solo mails to your list? Promote affiliate products etc.etc

I wouldn't pay much for it. An e-mail list of 5% open rates at best indicates...

    1. It's not very active.

    or

    2. It's not well targeted

    or

    3. There is little relationship between the sender and the receiver

If any of the above cases are true, this e-mail list won't be much profitable in the long run. It'll take a lot of work to turn things around. For me, it's better to just start from scratch...

    Just my 2 cents...

The subscriber list by itself is worth nothing. But you alluded to selling the business. Checkout BizBuySell.com It has an online analysis service to determine the approximate selling price as well as post your business for sale.

The problem is most people would probably be as skeptical as I am when I see Facebook fanpages or email lists being sold. Very rarely is someone going to give away something that is making them good money - there is usually a more simple reason as to why they are selling... because it's making them NO money.

You need some real solid proof of income before you attempt to sell. Someone who is going to pay you any decent sort of money will want to see proof of income for at least half a year or so.

A huge email list of targeted subscribers is great but if they don't buy anything the list is worthless.

I wouldn't sell the list. I would just sell a mention in each newsletter. That way you keep the list, you are not accused of spam, and you still make some profit.

That's what I would do if I were in your shoes.

With a list that size it should be very profitable why would u sell it first off? I agree with Alexa you shouldn't sell your list they opted in to your list not someone else's.

And where were the email addresses collected from what kind of traffic? Search engines, forum postings, blog commenting, social networking.

Please do not say traffic exchanges because that traffic is absolutely horrible and it does not convert. If it is from traffic exchanges it would be pretty much useless.

I disagree that OP shouldn't sell the list based on OP is the one that created the list.

Most folks build a list from a website that they own (optin form on website).

If OP wants to sell his website that created the list + the actual list itself, I don't see a problem selling.

OP, you should know the value of the list is based on what a buyer is willing to pay, not what you think it's worth, however it's a good idea to have a ballpeark figure to start with.

OP, you will no doubt have to allow at least one JV deal before selling the list, to show good faith, & to prove that your list isn't a pile of worthless emails.

Allow a JV & prove your list will deliver sales, your get more $$.
