And So The Nightmare Begins

I've so far gotten 2 legit emails from big companies I buy stuff from on and
offline that their email lists have been hacked and our email addresses
have been harvested. I think the ESP they referred to was Epsilon but I'm
not sure.

And so the nightmare begins. As if I didn't get enough spam or have to worry
about who was going to do what.

So...how many of you have also gotten legit emails from places like
Dress Barn or whoever?

My gut tells me that this is going to get messy, not to mention what might
happen if certain customers fall victim to email scams, blame the companies
who "allowed" their emails to be harvested and end up filing lawsuits.

Yeah...I think nightmare accurately describes the potential backlash from
all this.

I haven't received anything yet from the companies who have had their eMail lists compromised, though I should be on the lists of a couple I have seen mentioned publicly.

With the amount of spam I get now, I doubt I'll notice a few more. It seems like every spammer already had my eMail address (considering I've used the same one for maybe 15 years now), so I probably won't notice an uptick.

I've received two of those letters now. Not too worried about it. Gmail weeds out the spam pretty well and I have some hefty filters set up. My wife got the letter as well and shrugged it off. I figure MOST of the millions of emails will never be utilized, and others will get spammed to death. The odds are in my favor

I have not received any such mails but I doubt it has happened. In the past three or four days the number of spam mails in one of my email id which I normally use on all shopping sites has increased by about 20 times. I was wondering about what was going on.

I've received notices from Best Buy, Target, and others. Five companies total. Including Robert Half which is a recruiting company I used to use for jobs years ago. Forgot they existed but of course my email addy was in their Epsilon database.

I've never had a problem with spam. ^^ I use gmail, and it's really good at keeping the spam out.

Best buy - but like Miles said, not terribly worried about it. I don't click on links that come from unsolicited emails

It's due to the big hack of a marketing company's email lists.

It really shouldn't be a problem for IMers - surely we know not to click on links and give personal info. If we don't, something's not being learned.

All the hackers got were names and email addresses. The only way they can get your personal info to the point of doing damage is if you give it to them.

These were mailing lists of many commerce sites, credit card providers, etc - so bascially anything you get about "your account" or "your details" is likely to be a phishing email right now.

The prediction I heard was the hackers will send out email by the millions saying "your account may have been compromised so go here to check your details".

Click on no email links in emails like that - have no problem.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.
