Stop Torrent Sites From Getting My Stuff?

Anyone have any success with getting an item of theirs taken down from a torrent site, if it was illegally up there? I'm thinking it'd be quite tough.

It can be. Outside of issuing a DMCA, there isn't much that can be done. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there that have no respect for a person's intellectual property, and it's not possible to stop it all.

Virtually impossible to do. There are so many torrent engines that any or all of them could list your product.

Your product could end up in a share torrent page on just about any computer anywhere in the world.

Personally, I wouldn't stress over it.

The only real option that you have if you are really serious about protecting your products is to code them so that they have to "phone home" to verify legitimacy and compare either a purchasers email address with their IP. If you find that you are getting multiple IP hits for a particular email address, then disable the product.

Obviously this won't work with everything and is a somewhat costly measure. If you can justify the cost, that's about the best way to do it.

Always include ways you can make money in every product you release. You have to expect your products to be stolen and given away for free at some point.

The best advice to combat people giving your stuff on torrent sites is to dominate it yourself. Create a shorter or a trial version of your product and then promote the full version to them. Turn this into a torrent download and get it listed on all of the major torrent sites using all the important keywords. As the owner of a product you will always have the advantage at being the very first uploader of your product and if you do it properly you will easily domainate the torrent searches and drown out all the pirates.
Also, if someone see's that your already dominating the keywords they will be less likely to even bother uploading it and move onto something else.

Not forgetting, this strategy will give you an extra traffic source as well.

This is how I would do it and I honestly think its your best option, rather than spending hours trying to get torrents removed. When something has been leaked online, it is physically impossible to remove it because it will just keep on spreading so don't waste your energy on this.

This ^^^^ is definitely what I'd do. Put a very abbreviated "trial version" in such places yourself, include affiliate links, links to your own site, links to your squeeze page, whatever. Minimise the loss and try at least to get something back, over the longer term, from the "illicit" downloads.

And don't listen to anyone telling you that "illegal downloaders were never going to buy it anyway": this simply isn't true at all. The world is full of people who will look around for a free download, when they want an e-book or whatever, and then buy it only if they can't find one: these people do cost vendors money.

        Good luck!

One thing a good friend told me is if you do not want anyone to steal your stuff, do not put it on the web. This can be frustrating as you put work into something and want to gain from it. You obviously can put in protections, but you would hope that the gains that you make far outweigh the loss.

I like sitehero's idea. As an alternative, I was thinking of having a personalized copy for each buyer whenever they buy my products. These personalized copies can have hidden text on certain pages or qr codes that would point me back as to whom the offending pirate. I could threaten that pirate for a lawsuit or something.

To specify having the code hidden somewhere obscure like have a binary editor and randomly inserting a key somewhere in the PDF. The pirates may be able to remove it by converting it into a different format like PDF to EPUB. But on the most part, they will have a hard time finding that sort of a watermark. But if the file is not tampered like some guy just seeded it as is, you can check who the culprit is.

    Is this a serious question?

If I gave you $100,000,000 ($100 million) dollars, do you think you could do it?

Please don't say yes, because I'm actually referring to the film industry here, who spend multi millions trying to remove their movies from torrents and are totally unsuccessful.

So, short answer, no, it is impossible if it's up there and being downloaded frequently.

I always recommend to use a VPN for torrenting and as I was going through various articles I found the best torrent sites for 2017 list to be very useful.
