Maybe we should apply this to our list of excuses...

The new engineer at the office was escorted to his new cubicle by the engineering manager. He was given an assignment to work on, admonished to be as efficient as possible and left to get to it. After a few minutes of quiet work someone in one of the other cubicles hollered a number: "Two-seventy-three." Everyone in the office full of cubicles started laughing for a few moments and then all was quiet again, except for the sound of computer keyboards clicking away. A few minutes later someone else hollered another number and the office responded in the same way. The "new guy" stepped over to the next cubicle and asked what all of this was about. "Well," said the veteran engineer, "in order to be more efficient we have numbered all of the good jokes we know and whenever we want to tell one, we just call out the number. Since your new, you'll want to download the list from the server and get acquainted with our humor data base."

A couple of days later, the new engineer decided it was time to try his hand at this form of humor. He checked the database, assured himself that joke number 39 was very funny and then called out "thirty nine."

The office was silent. This didn't seem to work at all, so he asked the veteran engineer, "Why didn't the office respond with laughter at joke 39, isn't it very funny?" "Oh yes," said the veteran, "joke 39 is hilarious. But you know how it is: Some engineers just can't tell a joke."

Exactly...too many people look at this as a part-time hobby instead of a full-time business that you WILL make work.

I've fallen into the trap at times where I find myself in front of CNN for a couple of hours and then ask myself "what did I accomplish tonight?"

I have these two words beside my computer and can't help but look at them over and over again during the day...

      CONSISTENCY

      and

      URGENCY

Consistency depends on you having a plan, once you have the plan, then consistently executing is the best thing you can do to improve results.

Urgency is a state of mind that results in...
      1. Laster Focus
      2. High productivity
      3. Getting results

What really helps is to 1) Have a plan and 2) Create the environment under which you will act with urgency. That involves both increasing the pain of NOT acting and increasing the pleasure of accomplishing your end goals.

  • It's not that I don't have time, it's that the time that I'm devoting slips away so quickly. The same two hours that drag on foreeeeeeeever while I'm at my day job are gone in a blink of an eye when I get home and try to get as much done as I can before it's time to cook dinner. I suppose I need to structure myself with a "to do" list until I've gotten into the swing of things and know which activities are the most profitable.

    1. No time
    2. No money

Two of the biggest excuses in IM and life in general.

Well, find time. Find money. Prove to yourself how badly or how much you don't really want Internet success.

I was digging through some of my old posts. When I came across this one. As you can see, I wrote this a little over a year ago. As it's almost the new year, I figured it would be a good time to bump this thread.

Even though it's been a year since I originally wrote this, I hate to say some of the things on here still apply to me. In fact, now more than ever, after reading this and realizing it's been a year since I wrote it, is even more inspiration to actually take more focused action.

I hope that if one of your resolutions is to take more focused action with IM and to stop "diddling" this post inspires you.

Thanks Jason! Nice post, you know a lot about me then :-)

Buying a dishwasher and taking a job closer to home can add 5-10 hours a week to your IM time :-) but still, alas, I do find it hard to work and then come home and work, but I know a load of people do it for a lot less (e.g. 2 crap jobs to make ends meet) so not sure what my problem is sometimes.
