Where Do You Get Your Images

It seems like every major blog has at least 1 mage per post just to lighten things up. But where do I find them?

Is there an online source where I can download images for free and use them copywrite free? Where do you find your images?

Best free service for copyright free images is sxc.hu

You have got to check out the permissions on each photo though because often you need to seek permission to use the images publically (I have found that they reply within 24hrs saying "yes that's fine").

Otherwise, go for istock photos, this requires you to buy credits to use on purchasing images but it is rather cheap and the quality is a little better.

    Cheers,
    Dave

The Microsoft free photo site is petty handy although not in the same league as the ones mentioned here is fast and problem free. My wife is a graphic artist with access to a lot of paid resources and she says that she uses it constantly. Here:
Images - Clip Art, Photos, Sounds, & Animations - Microsoft Office

Hi there - I was threatened with multiple law suits on an old website which luckily I didnt build - the suit is targeted towards whomever added the images and not the site owner. I therefore watch what I do and am keen to give my VA's the correct advice too

I just checked this page out and cant find a single word of advice about their policy for using the photos so I'm guessing you can do what you like? Anyone got any other info, please advise

Best place to get images in my opinion is to take your camera with you every where and shoot your own.

You would be amazed at how quickly to can build up your own library of images. You can use one of the sites mentioned above when you need that picture of Paris. But if you just want to add something to for blog posts building your own library can be great.

Hi, my favorite website to get images from stock.xchng

The quality is good, and they allow to use for commercial purpose.
So no worry about the copyright issue.

If you look at their license agreement, it's pretty clearly spelled out:

        17. Office.com and Office Web App media elements and templates

If you use Microsoft Office.com or the Microsoft Office Web Apps, you may have access to media images, clip art, animations, sounds, music, video clips, templates, and other forms of content ("media elements") provided with the software available on Office.com or as part of a service associated with the software. You may copy and use the media elements in projects and documents. You may not: (i) sell, license, or distribute copies of the media elements by themselves or as a product if the primary value of the product is the media elements; (ii) grant your customers rights to further license or distribute the media elements; (iii) license or distribute for commercial purposes media elements that include the representation of identifiable individuals, governments, logos, trademarks, or emblems or use these types of images in ways that could imply an endorsement or association with your product, entity or activity; or (iv) create obscene works using the media elements. For more information, see the Use of Microsoft Copyrighted Content webpage (Use of Microsoft Copyrighted Content).

As often as possible I try to create my own images, if necessary use sotck images and heavily alter them in Photoshop. I also use Poser for figures and faces since I can't afford models.

I normally use the images from Google.

After you click on the Advanced Image Search in Google, there is an option at the bottom 'Usage Rights' which you can select "labeled for commercial reuse'.

My kids also use this a lot for their homework.

Do not just grab images from google images, you are not allowed to do that.

There are lots of websites that let you use their images, which you can buy, or use for free. Although for free; you sometimes have to give a link and credit for the picture. I've used freedigitalphotos.net for these free photos, in the past.

There are also some affiliate programmes that have lots images you can use on your site. You can also make those photos click-able with your affiliate link, which could lead to some extra sales.

EDIT: When I said do not use google images: I meant, do not grab any image you like without checking the copyright usage.

sxc.hu is great. Just pay attention to the license options so you don't risk getting in trouble.

morgueFile free photos for creatives by creatives is a good source.

Google Images is pretty good if you use the advanced search function, but be very careful as Google does not guarantee the license and you may end up using a graphic that you shouldn't without paying for it.

I use Zemanta plugin on my blog, which gives me graphics tailored to the text that are available, either public domain, Creative Commons for the most part. I am able to find most of the graphics I need with this plugin for Firefox.
