Definitely. Never use it for transactions. Only for indeed personal stuffs.

These sorts of alerts stop us getting too comfortable online. There are many scammers around sadly.

These are mainly people who have tried and failed in IM and are out to rip people off and claim short-term profits unrightfully.

You must suspect each and every person you deal with as a potential scammer, I know it sounds harsh but they really are everywhere in IM. If you proceed with caution every time you interact with someone you can be confident that you are being safe.

At least it was only $100!

I think it starts small, and in the beginning they might feel a little guilty, but over time as they continue without consequences they lose their conscience over time.

Think of it this way - anyone asking you to send the money as a "gift" is doing so to scam PayPal out of their fees. If they'll rip off PayPal, why wouldn't they rip you off, too?

There is a difference, though I believe the fact that I see that difference is probably a failing in me.

I am totally honest and above board in all my dealings with people, as they are real to me. They could be my wife, brother, father, friends, or at least I think of people that way.

Google, on the other hand, is a faceless entity. I feel no compunction in making Google think that my sites are more popular than they are, and that is because I don't think of them as people. I think most people act this way, though that doesn't make it right.

PayPal is a company that, in spite of what others say, I like.

I've talked to them on the phone, many times, and found them to be very helpful. I would certainly not cheat them out of their fees, but maybe someone else would, based on the logic I used concerning Google. Possibly this whole line of thought is a slippery slope.

As to tricking someone out of their money by exploiting a loop hole, well to me that is theft. Just the same as slipping their wallet from their pocket, or breaking into their house. That is totally wrong.

Pacesetter007,

I would advise you to phone PayPal and explain what happened. I have found them to be very helpful. Even if they cannot help you, they may be able to stop this from happening to others.

I wish I had better advice for you, but the best thing to do at this point is to warn PayPal what is going on, then count it as lost money.

Be completely honest with them, though. People tie themselves in some horrible knots by trying to be clever with PayPal. Honest is your best defense. Good luck!

It isn't just in IM that this sort of thing happens. I used to sell a lot on Ebay and I used to often be asked to put Gift on customs forms so that people could avoid paying import duties and taxes.

I would still file a report against the person by calling them and saying "I know I cant dispute the gift now but I want you to be aware so-and-so is scamming people doing this."

What I did like someone pointed out was completely illogical and maybe s........p. Why would I send business fee as gift?

I made that mistake and I'm sure that'll never happen again. Never. Just be careful guys when transacting business.

There're two side to a table. On one side is control, on the other side is where the explaination takes place. Lessons learnt. Don't be stupid!

You can tell times are tough because the sammers are everywhere these days. I see them in our program every day. We shut down about 5 scammers per day. A year ago that would have been one or two a week.

paypal has outrageos HIGH fees... when the conversion fe is involved, is almost 6.50% per small transactions.

and 6.50% for what? Paypal has crap service, millions of horror stories all over internet...

no wonder so many people are hating Paypal

I'm not saying that you shouldn't be upset. But strictly speaking every business faces and at some time will deal with shrinkage of some sort.(loss)

Many retail businesses see shrinkage ( loss from theft, errors, and poor judgment of upwards of 20%. This is a fact. I have dealt with and have clients who deal with this level of loss.)

Grow your business it will come back. Don't let it be a stumbling block.

One thing I can't fathom though is "why can't people be honest?" Why can't we just trust each other and live life in peace why?

I know, it's a shame that they would resort to such measures just to scam you out of your $100. There are so many ways to make an honest $100 on the internet that aren't really difficult at all, I wonder how people like this scammer can sleep every night perpetrating these scams time and time again (I'm sure this isn't the first or the last time he has done this).

Tim, look on the bright side. You only lost $100 - instead of wasting so much time lamenting your loss, you should instead concentrate on making that $100 back quickly.

If you put your mind to it and really focus, it should not take you more than a few days to recoup this loss. Remember that time is money, so just move on and quickly start getting productive!

Another thing to be leery of is non tangible goods. A Paypal rep told me that many things such as link building, etc. were considered non tangible. She even included websites.

She said that if you buy something non tangible and don't get it, you do not qualify for a Paypal refund.

In general you shouldn't exchange money through an individual. There are registered exchangers that offer their services for a fee, but even they can be unreliable.
The safest way to exchange is to withdraw your money & then put it where you want it.

And while were speaking of scams, don't ever send anything COD (Collect on Delivery) via the postal service. Even though it was specified CASH ONLY, the postal worker accepted a worthless check. I thought all would be ok by specifying CASH ONLY, but it didn't work out that way. The loss was to the tune of just over $400 and I still have that check in a frame over my desk to be a daily reminder. If you have to send something via COD, you would probably be better served using UPS or other like service. Just be sure to check if they are responsible if they screw up and accept a check instead of cash!

There are many online frauds in the name of money exchangers. I witnessed one when i was trying to exchange AP-PP money.
He takes AP money first and then simply escapes without sending the exchange money. He uses many unverified AP and PP accounts in various names like John Smith, Ying Song, and Marina Galac.
This might be helpful to someone i thought.

Thanks for that. I also learned the hard way with PayPal that if you close a dispute, and then later find out you've been scammed, you cannot reopen the dispute and the scammer gets away with your money.

How and where you got acquainted with the scammer?

Create a new BLOGSPOT account and HIGHLIGHT what you know about that guy and what happened.

Also, go to scam.com and other sites like it. Post your complaints there as well as you did here in WF.
