*runs around in circles screaming head off*

(sorry, just a little excited here!)

  • Congrats!

How much was the site earning on a monthly basis?
    • [1] reply
    • Only about $100.00! It was because the domain is a "celebrity's" name and the guy wants to build a fan site.....have at it, buddy!
      • [3] replies
  • Congrats. Hard work and some luck works wonders!!!!
  • Great job! I have seen some celeb fansites being flipped for good money but that was a while ago, good to see that is still alive!
It's an evergreen niche I guess, with all the new 'stars' popping up all day?
    I might register 'whichseatcoulditake.com'

    • I like the reference. "it's friday"??

      Haha....

I think that these are the types of sites that do hold value because of the people that want to run sites on them. Anytime you have a domain it can be worth nothing to someone and a lot to someone else.

  • It was an Amazon site....here you can see it, I don't care:

Peter Criss is the former Drummer of KISS | Merchandise, Toys, Collectibles, Shirts

He is the former, original drummer of KISS and I was selling KISS merch on it. All of my traffic is typein traffic, no SERP results and I get about 100 uniques a day.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Thanks. That's just what I needed.
  • That's awesome. How old was the site? And where did you sell it, Flippa?
    • [2] replies
    • I think I've owned it since 1999. And no the guy just contacted me out of the blue and offered me money for it and we made the transaction.
      • [1] reply
    • ^This. Is this direct contact and transaction via paypal or you used sites like flippa.Eager to know
  • Wow, 11+ years - that's quite a long time. I notice the official website of Peter Criss has a .net extension and you had the .com. That's nice! Also, your site is on the first page of Google, although most searchers for the phrase 'Peter Criss' would obviously go to the official site. Still, good deal!

    Congratulations and keep it up!

    To success,
  • I remember this being discussed heavily in this thread below.

I guess you never heard back from Peter then?

    • Ramone, I was thinking the exact same thing!

      Have a Great Day!
      Michael
    • Good thing she sold it off then, don't you agree?
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • No I never did. I even got ahold of his assistant. Oh well.
      • [1] reply

    • I remember that from awhile back! Looks like no problems arose

      Congrats AFI!

  • congrats... I need to sell some domains soon too that is a lot of money
  • Awesome!!! Congratulations on your success : )
  • Congrats - that's awesome! An inspiration to those of us who are deciding whether or not to start playing around in the website flipping business.
  • Thanks for sharing!!! I'm happy for you... Keep up the good work!
  • Congratulation for your great success. This is really fantastic.
  • congratulations. lol that is good work and good luck!!
  • Congratulations jennifer. I't great that you were able to keep that site going for so long.

It goes to show that much interest is out there in cyberspace.

I have never tried flipping sites only pancakes. However another resource to attach to my Internet Marketing belt.

    Thanks for inspiring us all

    • Nice! That is a very exciting feeling. I've experienced it twice.
Congrats! Your excitement has made my day
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • Wow! This is awesome! So this begs the question:

Let's say you have a website that earns $100 a month on average.

      Is it better to:

      a) build up the site to increase its revenue

      b) flip the site

I have several small niche sites that barely earn $100 per month. I wouldn't mind selling them for a lump sum equal to double or triple what my projected annual earnings for the site would be!

But are there people out there who are building up websites from day one WITH THE SOLE INTENTION OF FLIPPING THE SITE SOMEDAY?

Or is domain flipping something you just kind of decide to do after you've built up a website, tested the waters, and decided that you would rather let someone else take over this headache?
  • Congrats AFI
Thats a nice little lift for you.
  • Wow, It feels good doesn't? Rinse and REPEAT, that's my advice to you.

    Hope that Helps

  • Well had I been you (I wouldn't have celebrity squatted in the first place, but assuming I did) the last thing I would do is announce on a public forum openly that you profited off a celebrity domain name which you used solely for money making purposes.

That is against WIPO code of conduct, and had he decided to take this to court you would have stood no chance, even now you better hope the new guy doesn't do anything silly to the name which causes it to be traced back to you and this thread where you openly announce how much you made and the domain name in question.

No such thing as easy money, Bruce Springsteen worked hard for it, and you profited from his hard work...
    • [2] replies
    • It wasn't Bruce Springsteen, it was Peter Criss. :p

It was probably $2900 profit. I literally only paid for the domain name to renew every year and sat on the domain for years until I used the ReviewAzon plugin this year which pulls content by itself.

I thought I said it already earlier in the post but if I didn't, this was direct contact and NOT on Flippa.

I tried to just GIVE it to him, he ignored me.
    • Hi there, could you more precisely point out the segment in the WIPO site which applies to this particular case?
To me the site is just another merchandise retailing site dedicated to one type of merchandise. It is not AFI pretending to be the guy himself or exclusive vendor for USA or similar.
      • [2] replies
  • On occasions like this, a site is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It means more than what it is earning or how many visitors it is getting.

They buy it for the name and what they can do with it.

    Congrats BTW

    • That is so AWESOME! I am excited for you. Good niche, and good price. What are you spending your $3,000 on? More amazon sites . . ?
  • Congratulations on the sale! I have a couple of sites available for sale, I don't have them listed anywhere - just have a notice on page one that the site is available. That's great someone contacted you!
  • How much of that was profit? i.e. how much did you pay to start it up, time invested, etc.?
  • Awesome! That's a nice chunk of quick cash. Congrats!
  • woah. i need to get into the flippa business too
    • [2] replies
    • Very nice profit from a sale. Now you can do a real WSO promoting how you built an Amazon site, gained some revenue then flipped it for $$$$.$$

      Congradulations
    • Jen, Way to go. Old domains do have value. Enjoy the high !!!

Rachel, It is a good business but requires much patience. At $8 plus some effort having patience is sometimes not too hard. Good Name + product + traffic spiced with backlinks does wonders.

      Ray
  • I wonder actually if you could have tried to sell it to Peter Himself, because his official site had to use .net instead.
  • Great Job... Congrats...
Do you have other similar sites?

  • Also, I thought the term "flipping" was buying a site, quickly value adding, then onselling. Not holding for 10 years.
    • [1] reply
    • Bunch a Debbie Downers here. She might have parked the domain for 10 years but from that other link that you posted above, it seems like she didn't build a site around it until October 2010.

So that's 5-6 months of creating a site. Building it up to around $100/month and selling it off for 3K. Sounds like flipping to me.

Just registering a domain and parking it doesn't mean bupkis until developed. And you don't really have to buy the website to flip it. Buy a domain, build a site, and flip it.

      Congrats Jennifer.
      • [ 3 ] Thanks
      • [2] replies
  • Nice and very lucky too.

Win / Win From both sides.
  • great AFI, i need to start learning stuff like this,$3k sale is incredible.

    • Congratulations, it always feels extra special when the success is unexpected or out of the blue.

      Well done!
  • congrats!!!
  • Nice work dude.

I'll reveal one of the most important secrets to site flipping.. ignore Flippa.com and eBay auctions when looking to buy a site.. e-mail site owners directly!

The deals you can get this way are incredible!
  • TARATATATATATATANNNNNNNNNNNNN!Congratulations on your success! Thanks for sharing with us Keep up the good work!
  • i would say that you are lucky. Someone contacted you directly to purchase your site is either you are lucky or your site has a lot of potential. Initially i thought you sell through flippa!
  • Congratulations on the sale! still good luck
  • I've seen these go both ways (good and ugly)

Nice to hear someone came out on top every once in awhile

Just wonder how to scale it up to made more money
  • wow that's awesome... flipping sites is probably the fast's way to make money online if your not one of them guru dudes..

can you tell us if you did anything special to get the sale?
  • Congrats! Nice change for what seems like a simple website.
  • It does happen. Hows that for motivation!
  • Well done! Congrats on your sell, are you able to tell me what site you used to sell it?

    Thanks
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Waoo great job; I too have different sites and want to sell them. These are full of valuable contents.
  • Congratulations! Thanks for the inspirational story and good luck on your next project
  • congrats Afi but I wouldn't give details about the site
  • That is awesome! Congrats. Makes me want to do something with the 80+ domains I'm sitting on. Right now there just parked at sedo waiting for offers. I suppose there's a proactive way to find buyers. Just haven't had the time.
  • Oh thats awesome, I am glad that there is people out there looking for exact domains and they would pay a lot of money or it ;O
  • Congratulations! That was a very good sale.
If you don't mind, I would like to make a comment here as soon
as you stop "runs around in circles screaming head off".
Go back and read posting # 30.
You're a smart person and you know how to handle it.

  • wow !
    Congratulations
  • 11 years to make 3k... hmmm... I hope you didn't put any time into this and have more of these nice old domains.
  • The site you sold for $3000 was it unique? Tells us how you do it!

  • That's awesome! Congratulations
  • Congrats on your success...
  • Hello AFI,

I'm trying to follow in your footsteps with my "first" website sales on Flippa. I've just uploaded my auction: https://flippa.com/132220-89month---...#comment491009

It's a small network of AdSense site I created back in December. If anyone's interested...can you take a look at the copy/auction and let me know what I'm doing right/wrong? I've been reading FlipFilter.com and FlipWebsites.com recently and picked up a few tips from them...

    • Well done Jennifer - it does make me weep how I let so many great domains/sites go in the past. You're one smart lady. I'm inspired!!
  • That was smart! Congrats!!
  • Congrats,

    Love stories like this!

Thats a great bargain. I say this because the "general rule of flipping thumb" is sell the site at a price close to what it produces in clean profit annually. So you got winner, enjoy and expand!!

    cheers

    Rich
  • Great flipping, congratulations!
  • Congratulations!

It seems that you already figured out how to successfully flip sites .

So , why not rinse and repeat in every way possible .
  • good work
  • Congrats! I'm currently working on selling my first site on flippa. According to Webtrafficagents website value, your site was worth $3,579.86,.. So great job Hopefully I'll have half that success some day.
  • That is pretty cool. I have read a bit about using sites for trending celebs but I haven't seen it in action.

I have just started reading flipping sites and am dying to get started but my bank has run dry until the end of the month for new ideas
  • Congratulations. That's highly motivating.

But, it's vital to be careful with domains that are ordinarily copyright protected, and those that may lead to law suits. There's a lot of money to be made in buying and selling websites -- on flipppa.com, average total sales is a little over 1 million dollars each month! There are opportunities for everyone ($200 sites to $60k sites...). Newbies and masters can play.

Checking the listings, and the ''just sold'' sections on www.flippa.com shows how huge the model is.

And, I suspect some savvy marketers are building digital assets that they plan to sell down the line. It's a lovely exit strategy. That's one of my criteria, now-- build assets that can bring recurring income, and that can fetch good money, in a year, or a few years from now.

Lot's of info on flippa and on FlippingPlanet - The Site Flipping Forum

  • You just found a Rembrandt in your attic, and sold it to the pawn-shop. Whoever bought it is going to make a mint, so long as they steer clear of a lawsuit as you have.

    Congratulations on the sale.
  • good to hear you're having great success!

  • you might sold a domain for $3k, domain market is huge these days,
Believe if or not, domaining market is more lucrative than IM market, if you truly know how to do it. I sold dozens of domains over $10k. , For some domains, i received low six figures before, like voiphone (dot com).
Plus do you believe a domain can gain you $1k without any promoting? hehe ,you won't believe it, seldom people know that. That's called domain parking.
Take a look at sedo, you'll be shocked at the domain price. Many domains sold over 10 million, like insurance.com, sex.com,...
