I'm all addicted to building up and selling off my sites now. This is just insane, I can't believe someone paid $3000.00 for one of my sites!!

*runs around in circles screaming head off*

(sorry, just a little excited here!)

Only about $100.00! It was because the domain is a "celebrity's" name and the guy wants to build a fan site.....have at it, buddy!

Nice one... how many monthly visits?

Was sort of site was it? adsense?

I've a plan to rent a site... found a hotels name .com, it's ok, it's the place name and hotel.com

fairly easy competion, and nearly 4,000 exact searches a month for that keyword.

I could sell it to them however... hmmm... flipping sites eh.

Congratulations, Jennifer! You definitely made far more than the customary
5X-10X monthly earnings, and the guy must have really wanted the site - the domain is a pretty desirable one, and I'm sure this played a huge part in him wanting to pay so much for it!

I like the reference. "it's friday"??

      Haha....

I think that these are the types of sites that do hold value because of the people that want to run sites on them. Anytime you have a domain it can be worth nothing to someone and a lot to someone else.

It was an Amazon site....here you can see it, I don't care:

Peter Criss is the former Drummer of KISS | Merchandise, Toys, Collectibles, Shirts

He is the former, original drummer of KISS and I was selling KISS merch on it. All of my traffic is typein traffic, no SERP results and I get about 100 uniques a day.

Wow, 11+ years - that's quite a long time. I notice the official website of Peter Criss has a .net extension and you had the .com. That's nice! Also, your site is on the first page of Google, although most searchers for the phrase 'Peter Criss' would obviously go to the official site. Still, good deal!

    Congratulations and keep it up!

    To success,

Wow! This is awesome! So this begs the question:

Let's say you have a website that earns $100 a month on average.

      Is it better to:

      a) build up the site to increase its revenue

      b) flip the site

I have several small niche sites that barely earn $100 per month. I wouldn't mind selling them for a lump sum equal to double or triple what my projected annual earnings for the site would be!

But are there people out there who are building up websites from day one WITH THE SOLE INTENTION OF FLIPPING THE SITE SOMEDAY?

Or is domain flipping something you just kind of decide to do after you've built up a website, tested the waters, and decided that you would rather let someone else take over this headache?

Well had I been you (I wouldn't have celebrity squatted in the first place, but assuming I did) the last thing I would do is announce on a public forum openly that you profited off a celebrity domain name which you used solely for money making purposes.

That is against WIPO code of conduct, and had he decided to take this to court you would have stood no chance, even now you better hope the new guy doesn't do anything silly to the name which causes it to be traced back to you and this thread where you openly announce how much you made and the domain name in question.

No such thing as easy money, Bruce Springsteen worked hard for it, and you profited from his hard work...

It wasn't Bruce Springsteen, it was Peter Criss. :p

How much of that was profit? i.e. how much did you pay to start it up, time invested, etc.?
It was probably $2900 profit. I literally only paid for the domain name to renew every year and sat on the domain for years until I used the ReviewAzon plugin this year which pulls content by itself.

^This. Is this direct contact and transaction via paypal or you used sites like flippa.Eager to know
I thought I said it already earlier in the post but if I didn't, this was direct contact and NOT on Flippa.

I wonder actually if you could have tried to sell it to Peter Himself, because his official site had to use .net instead.
I tried to just GIVE it to him, he ignored me.

Hi there, could you more precisely point out the segment in the WIPO site which applies to this particular case?
To me the site is just another merchandise retailing site dedicated to one type of merchandise. It is not AFI pretending to be the guy himself or exclusive vendor for USA or similar.

This person is just rushing to a snap judgment and doesn't know all the facts about this site. Pay no attention to him/her. Jennifer (AFI) has stated that she tried repeatedly to contact this artist over the years, and even offered to hand it over to him for free, but he never responded.

I believe everything she did was above board, and she did sit on the site for many years (over 9, I believe) before finally deciding to develop it so that she could at least recoup her domain renewal fees that had accumulated over this time.

On occasions like this, a site is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It means more than what it is earning or how many visitors it is getting.

They buy it for the name and what they can do with it.

    Congrats BTW

Bunch a Debbie Downers here. She might have parked the domain for 10 years but from that other link that you posted above, it seems like she didn't build a site around it until October 2010.

So that's 5-6 months of creating a site. Building it up to around $100/month and selling it off for 3K. Sounds like flipping to me.

Just registering a domain and parking it doesn't mean bupkis until developed. And you don't really have to buy the website to flip it. Buy a domain, build a site, and flip it.

      Congrats Jennifer.

Also, one has to remember that while she held on to the domain for a long time, she has really only done a minimal amount of work on the site. It's not like she spent thousands of dollars or hours getting the site to the point where it sold for $3,000.

It has also made her passive income from the parking over all these years, so it doesn't sound like a bad deal at all, especially when considering how little time, effort and cost she actually poured into its development.

    Hello AFI,

I'm trying to follow in your footsteps with my "first" website sales on Flippa. I've just uploaded my auction: https://flippa.com/132220-89month---...#comment491009

It's a small network of AdSense site I created back in December. If anyone's interested...can you take a look at the copy/auction and let me know what I'm doing right/wrong? I've been reading FlipFilter.com and FlipWebsites.com recently and picked up a few tips from them...

    Congrats,

    Love stories like this!

Thats a great bargain. I say this because the "general rule of flipping thumb" is sell the site at a price close to what it produces in clean profit annually. So you got winner, enjoy and expand!!

    cheers

That is pretty cool. I have read a bit about using sites for trending celebs but I haven't seen it in action.

I have just started reading flipping sites and am dying to get started but my bank has run dry until the end of the month for new ideas

    Congratulations. That's highly motivating.

But, it's vital to be careful with domains that are ordinarily copyright protected, and those that may lead to law suits. There's a lot of money to be made in buying and selling websites -- on flipppa.com, average total sales is a little over 1 million dollars each month! There are opportunities for everyone ($200 sites to $60k sites...). Newbies and masters can play.

Checking the listings, and the ''just sold'' sections on www.flippa.com shows how huge the model is.

And, I suspect some savvy marketers are building digital assets that they plan to sell down the line. It's a lovely exit strategy. That's one of my criteria, now-- build assets that can bring recurring income, and that can fetch good money, in a year, or a few years from now.

You just found a Rembrandt in your attic, and sold it to the pawn-shop. Whoever bought it is going to make a mint, so long as they steer clear of a lawsuit as you have.

    Congratulations on the sale.

you might sold a domain for $3k, domain market is huge these days,
Believe if or not, domaining market is more lucrative than IM market, if you truly know how to do it. I sold dozens of domains over $10k. , For some domains, i received low six figures before, like voiphone (dot com).
Plus do you believe a domain can gain you $1k without any promoting? hehe ,you won't believe it, seldom people know that. That's called domain parking.
Take a look at sedo, you'll be shocked at the domain price. Many domains sold over 10 million, like insurance.com, sex.com,...
