Skepticism about "The Sandbox"

So the common thought is that too many backlinks too fast can result in google "sandboxing" your site, meaning stripping it of a high ranking for a while, and forcing it to work it's way back over time.

This gets debated by tons of people, but here is my big question...

If this is the case, couldn't people force their competitors to be sandboxed?

I understand that after they theoretically recover, they would have a lot more links, courtesy of you, but maybe you could use links that dont stick long. I'm not saying this would be a good strategy to use, but it just seems odd that you would be able to do it.

I'm going to be brief here because there are thousands of threads on this.

The Sandbox doesn't exist. It does make for good sales-copy when trying to sell SEO services though... You certainly can get another site to start dancing though by sending links to them. Unfortunately once they stop dancing they'll just come back stronger...

Also this probably belongs in the SEO forum, for future reference.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

Good question...I'd also like to know the answer to this. But yeah just like you said, I've also heard that even after a sandbox issue from a whole slew of backlinks, the site that was affected by the Sandbox will always come back stronger than it was, or so I hear.

The sandbox is just another word used to describe a loss in rankings when Google is reevaluating your sites new incoming links.

This will probably be moved to the SEO forum soon, but my own 2 cents (and this is just a guess on my part -- I have no other basis for it) is that the sandbox would happen with a brand new site because Google may theorize that no one would have known about it to Google Bowl it to begin with. In any event, Matt Cutts has said that Google has various ways to distinguish whether you did it yourself or a competitor did it, though he didn't elaborate. Suffice to say, it's unlikely you can make this happen for a competitor.
