Visitors are engaged, just not converting - help?

Hey guys, i was posting last August about how to make a sales page to sell me real-life math lessons and you guys helped a ton. I haven't been hitting it really hard, but I ended up selling over 50 copies with just setting it and forgetting it since august which i was pretty happy with considering how niche it is. I have been working on a relaunch with video lessons to sell a product at a higher price and just relaunched last week.

With the relaunch I was able to get an e-mail blast from a friend who runs a large math homeschooling site, i'm getting 12-20 uniques a day from regular search, and i'm paying for another 10-20 clicks a day through adsense during this testing phase. Traffic has leveled off now and I am really starting to be able to cipher through some of my metrics and trying to figure out how to adjust my approach...

Today is a perfect example... So far I've had around 40 uniques, and 1/3 of those have stayed well over a minute - most of the 1/3 have actually stayed over 5 minutes and all the way up to 18 minutes. That same 1/3 also has had multiple actions so I know there is a solid engagement and interest in my site. I'm quite Ok with a bounce rate of around 50% and 1 out of ever 3 visitors interested enough in my product to click on things and stay over 5 minutes. The problem is I haven't converted anything today or the past few days. In fact, between getting e-mails or selling a product i've only converted about 4 in the last 465 uniques even though my engagement has been even higher than it was today.

So what is wrong? Unfortunately the only thing i can guess at is price or the fact that I am selling a "subscription" (really just access they have to renew in 6 months) for 6 months to the lesson plans, worksheets, and video lessons.

I was really hoping to sell this at atleast $14.99, and $17.99 was preferred. Any thoughts?

And if you want to see it is at:
makemathmore.com

Always longer than I intend, thanks for reading.

    Hi Matt,

First of all, I'm so happy to find someone that likes math. You know, I love maths and Physics. They are my hobbies.

Anyway, this is about your site. Here they are a couple of ideas:

    - Why don't you give a free sample PDF or video of one of your lessons or a $1 trial period? Most people don't buy the first time they are offered a product. If you give them something free (in exchange of their email), you will increase your chances of making a sales by contacting them later.

    - Talk more about the benefits (not features) of your product. Use bullet points to make them eye grabbing. You describe very well what people will get if they buy your product, but you should tell them what problem is it solving.

    Hope it helps

      Thanks for your reply!

Point #1 - I do offer a free lesson download and preview of the videos for free.

Point #2 is well taken and I will work on that, to me it seems though that if they are that interested to stay for that long, that this to me doesn't seem like the reason they would leave but I could be wrong...

    Hi Matt,

Do you know how long I've been trying to get my sister to do something like this?! She just doesn't get it. Glad someone does!

Without even reading through the copy, there are a few things that jump out at me here...

    1. When you say "Preview a Lesson Now," I expect to see a video of an actual lesson to see how you actually walk them through it. Maybe you could stop short (for the preview) of giving the answer or something. It's probably better to just make up an extra lesson just to use for this.

But the mash up style video--while very cool--doesn't give me a quick, clear peek at what you're offering. So they may be feeling a bit confused after watching it (or part of it).

    2. What People are Saying--both the top comments on either side are from "Kathy." Makes me think it's the same Kathy or you were just picking names and goofed. It would be best if you could include last names, if not, then at least a last name initial.

It sounds minor, and it is relative to the other two, but little things like that can put a ding in your credibility to the skeptical Internet buyer.

    3. The pricing chart--There are several things here:

First, it's not clear that the $17.99 is all they'll pay for 6 months--they could be thinking it's $17.99 a month.

Second, the $11.99 ebook is kind of getting dissed here. For just $6 more, they can get all these videos...but some of these parents may not want the videos.

And then you've got the Yes and No chart. Do you really want to buy something that has a string of NO's in it??! (LOL). I would try using green checkmarks to show what each product has--it'll make the same point without throwing the ebook under the bus.

But I would also add a line and make 4 Bonus Video Lessons and x More Lessons Added Monthly separate lines (and fill in the X with the number of videos you plan to add a month, obviously).

The Stream Lesson Video line is confusing to me. When I think of streaming video, I think of someone broadcasting live via a site like Ustream or web conferencing. I would use something more like The 12 Real-Life Lessons in Video, and put it right under the 12 Real-Life Lessons one.

And I think you need to clarify Individual Lesson Support. I know you say further up that they can leave questions and comments under the videos but does that mean you'll respond? I know this sounds like a dumb question but believe me, I've seen situations where it didn't. Plus if you are going to respond, that's HUGE and really needs to be played up more.

One other thing that brings to mind is whether other people will be able to see their questions and comments? If not, then I'd stress it's private. If so, then I'd leave it as is.

Finally, yeah, the six month thing may be problematic. It's just odd. People are used to either a year or monthly. Maybe you should just add the 6 month price and half price renewal together and give them a year. That would also add some more distance between the video and ebook version.

I know a bit about the Math Center market though and I think you may be able to charge even more than that.

OK, well I think I've rambled on long enough. I hope it helps! I think you've really got a great idea here.

Wow, that is some freaking fantastic stuff - thank you so much! Gives me a lot to work on. You are pretty much dead on on most things, i have just a couple of responseses :

The free preview is apparently a tricky ordeal. I don't think it makes sense to do a full free video lesson as those are around 10 minutes and I don't think anyone would watch that long, which is why I went with the montage idea.

And then i am treating the book badly actually on purpose. I was attempting to use it to sell the video subscriptions, but that might be a bad approach. Thanks for bringing that to my attention and thanks for everything!

        You're welcome!

And yes, you're right--at 10 minutes, that's probably too long to do a full lesson preview.

Ah, I was wondering that. And many times, that would be a great approach. Although I'm sure the kids would prefer the videos, I just wonder if you may have a bunch of video-resistant parents in your market...

Hey Matt, Tracy gave some excellent advice. Here's my 2 cents. I hate math. I wasn't that good at it in school, had no idea why I was doing alot of things, the only goal was to get my A and get out of the class. This type of math would have kept me from making alot of BAD financial mistakes when I was older. The older I get, the more I start to appreciate it though ;-)

With that being said, I would say that you need to engage your audience more. More benefits, benefits, benefits with some features sprinkled on top.

You need a pop over or a slide up to use as a pattern interupt to capture some leads.
I would think with a well written auto-responder series, you can get people to purchase. I'm sure that Tracy or Anita Ashland could cut you a deal for a series of 7 autoresponder messages.

Give away a full lesson so that the parents could let their kids try it. I would give away your best, most engaging lesson to hook them in. Then email them with the autoresponder series :-)

On the video, don't talk something different while testimonials are going up on the screen. People can't see both and chances are they will be reading and not listening. Engage them more.

I don't know your market, but I would suggest getting a copy writer to write your copy. There are plenty of good ones in here and I do think Tracy is one. They can turn something like math and paint power words all over it to make your buyers want it.

Your site is beautiful by the way. Don't undersell your PDF. Give them the option and then show that you get that + video for 1 yr for your price/ month. Make it clear.

One thing that would help on our features is to ask why... why would I want to put polygons together? You need something better than to make new shapes.

You need to drill down life importance and life application. That's what I would do. How will it help their kid pass math and do better in life because they understand why they passed math... like me :-)

    Hope that helps.

Oh yeah, take some of your lessons and hack them up and put on you tube. This should get you more visitors.

Thanks Dr. Livingston. This has been great help. I totally thought I was outlining the benefits, it wasn't until you guys said this that I stopped and thought about my copy is definitely more feature laden then benefits. Appreciate that. I will have to do some more research on autoresponders and pop-up/slide overs as I have no experience with those at all - thanks for the advice!
