I am Addicted to Internet Marketing

This might sound like a good thing if I was addicted to producing a lot of quality content. The problem is that I am actually addicted to the exciting part of IM, such as checking my email, checking my stats, checking the sales that I made, my twitter, my youtube, my forums, related news etc. By the time I am done with that, its time to check my email again, and so I go over and over again.

I was always kind of aware of that, but I did not treat it as big deal. After all there are much worse things to be addicted to.

But a week ago, I wrote down every activity that I did and the time it took to do it, and waste internet browsing ammounted to a lot of time. Close to half of my over all disposable time.

This week I started to go for a walk and meditate first thing when I wake up, instead of checking my email for an hour. And it feels great. It makes me wonder how much greater I could feel when Ill get a hanle on my internet addiction.

I also believe it would help me to make a lot more money, because I will be able to dedicate some of free time to producing.

I actually do not agree. It is good to visit here when you have some offtime. First off there is a ton of value being provided by other members through their questions and answers. Secondly, you get to communicate directly with people doing the same things as you are. Third, you can build trust in your name to either get people on your list or get them to buy your products.

          Mike,

This forum can be a time waster for sure.

You can build an online reputation here, yes. For a lot of people,
WarriorForum is indeed a huge time waster. There are people who
can balance their time better than others.

I think I can relate to some extent. I love checking my email! But it can't stop there - you have to go on an be productive.

You could maybe set up certain times for checking for email, and then get to work in between. Check in with twitter and other social sites just twice a day - morning and evening.

You at least can see what's happening, so now you have the chance to change it:-)

Funny! I often do the same thing. It's so easy to get caught up in checking email and stats all day. I try my hardest to just do both once a day. Hasn't worked out too good for me though

That is funny that you have brought this topic up. I did the same thing when I started in internet marketing and working at home. I did not have a journal of the time I spent each day and how I spent it. I started one and realized that I spend a lot of time doing the mundane things instead of driving traffic and profits.

For anyone in this position, make sure that you keep a journal of the time you spend on what issue each day and spend majority of your time following up with leads and creating new ones. The emails don't go anywhere.

The internet can be a huge time-sink. I used to waste hours because I would be searching something and find something else interesting and before I knew it the whole day was gone. I found a handy tool called Simpleology (you can probably Google it) that helps me organize my day and keep me on task. Also, before I end a day, I take a few minutes and just make a list of the things I did that actually created revenue or moved me closer to a goal. Knowing I have to make that list every day gives me the extra push to be productive and not just busy.

It all requires planning!! Plan your time as far as what you plan to do. And be sure to set aside time for leisure as well, such as going on this forum A little bit of everything is a healthy mix as long as you are planning well for it.

  • I likewise have many of the same issues to deal with in being really productive. It's like dieting. They (diets) usually fail because we like the activities that make us overweight. "Eating!"

I never had long term success with dieting. That bothered me and I knew there had to be a solution that would work. How could I do what I like "Eat" and yet become healthier.

Internet dieting, to become more productive, has a lot of the same issues to deal with and are similar in nature to those dealt with in successful weight loss. I have been fairly successful at weight loss. Using similar techniques I am forming a system that allows me to still feed my Internet addiction (fascination) and yet be productive enough to create revenue on the Internet.

I may at some time write an article or ebook to offer more thoughts on the WF or on a bog about my "Internet dieting" strategies.

Let me give a couple tips now however.

    1. Block out a short but intense time to do a planned activity to promote your Internet business. Set an alarm on your phone, timer or clock and refuse for this "short period" to allow any thing to distract you including looking at the clock. That's why you use a timer of some sort. When the time is up go and play! Don't work a little longer.

    2. Plan these work times ahead and "you" decide when they should happen. Set your timer and repeat the exercise in step 1 again. There is sound proven reasoning behind this. Set your work period for maybe 30-40 min. at first. Do it twice a day if you like.

At the end of a week you will have produced a solid 8 hours +/- of intense, planned and structured production time accumulated. (Are you "really" doing this now? No ADD? No daydreaming? No Google "research" that ends up down a rabbit trail? etc.)

Slowly increase these periods and it will amaze yourself how much you have accomplished and had play time too. Those that claim to make a lot of revenue and play at the beach too have learned to do this. If you quiz them they will tell you of using similar techniques as described.

If you would like to learn more I suggest you read and ponder what Tim Ferris says in the "Four Hour Body". I am not an affiliate and have nothing to gain from this referral. Tim is not the only one who suggests "minimum effective dose" theories which are similar to my above tip. I have been practicing these concepts since before Tim was a pup. He just has a lot of good points and currently is well known.

Maybe more points later. Keep watching for the "Old Dog" posts when they pop up.

My disclaimer. As usual I just give my opinion, think about what I say and grow it into something that fits you if you like.
