If you do yearly subscriptions...

do you do (1) a one time yearly fee and then have your service e-mail them near or shortly after termination to renew or (2) do you set-up an automatic yearly renewal?

I lean towards option 1 as I think more people get scared off of automatic renewals and paypal discloses this when they are purchasing...

Any thoughts?

I think the first option is better for yearly subscription, and automatic renewals for monthly subscriptions. People tend to forget they subscribed to something after a year, so if you automatically renew their subscription, you may see a surplus of complaints or refunds.

Also, if you're promoting via clickbank I don't think they allow yearly subscription models anymore. I could be wrong though.

This is my thoughts exactly. If someone is automatically charged after a year and they didn't expect it that will make for a very angry person that could bring down your brand as opposed to someone who is sent an e-mail asking them to renew sounds much more agreeable...

This is a very interesting subject to me.

I am in the process of launching a project that will
entail an annual subscription. With the nature of
this, there really is no way to set up a monthly rate.

I am looking forward to reading some opinions.
