Dont become your own competition [Article Marketing]

For those that use article directories as a means of site promotion, here's a quick tip that I thought I would share. Many of you may already be aware of this, but for those that arent, or for the likes of me, who have now learnt the hard way, dont become your own competition!

What do I mean?

I use article directories simply as a means of linkbuilding. Gaining backlinks. I dont have any intention of ranking my articles, and the traffic I might get from them I see as a bit of an added bonus. This strategy may change over time, but for now, Im happy

Recently I outsourced multiple articles to promote one of my products, and it now seems that Ive lost first position because the article has outranked my site!

This is because I used my primary keyword that I was optimizing for, in the TITLE of my article.

If you want to rank YOUR OWN WEBSITE high in the search engines, then AVOID using your targeted keywords in the title of your articles, because its likely that those articles will rank well, and then you'll be trying to beat out your own marketing efforts - which is a complete nuisance!

Use your targeted keywords in the resource box, but certainly not in the title. You dont want to become your own competition.

Hope this helps

Well, I used to think this way as well, but now I post unique content to the article directories and I'm perfectly happy to take multiple positions on page 1 of Google.

Of course I may change the way I do things down the road, but I no longer write articles just for backlinks. I write them for traffic.

Interesting. I mainly submit articles for the backlinks, but wouldn't mind them bring a little extra traffic:-)

I'm wondering even if your article outranks your site, the readers get a chance to know you a little more from the article, and then, hopefully, will click through to your site and maybe be a little more "warmed up?"

I used to do that. Now I post spinner seeds to my spinner directory. It's kinda like an article directory, but any time someone stops by and grabs the HTML for an article, they publish a unique spin which is different every time the page is refreshed.

I learned the technique from the creator of SENUKE. That guy is a freaking genius. It is a serious paradigm shift from traditional article marketing which propagates/syndicates duplicate content across the web mindlessly.

I will never go back to traditional article marketing again. The Farmer update killed that for me.

I agree with Mike. If you don't write that article with keywords in the title...someone else will.

Don't you prefer owning that spot over someone else?

I feel this is a blessing in disguise. Besides, as Google dances around, the original site will rise to the top naturally.

Mind if I restate the problem?

Since you are using article directories for backlinks I'll hazard a guess that the article was not your best effort.

Nothing per se wrong with that strategy.

But since it is now outranking your website, which is your best effort, there is a problem.

    Solutions:

    1. I agree about in the future avoiding using certain keywords if this is the purpose of your article.

    2. Obviously, now you need to work on backlinks to increase your site in the SERPS.

    3. Delete or modify the article in the directory (if you can).

    4. Now you know that if you write a great article and submit it to that directory you can get an additional top search rankings. Then, "competition" will not necessarily be so bad because the article will serve as almost a second website - and you will pushed a competitor off the the first page.

    Hey guys,
Youve certainly given me a new perspective on this. For that I thank you.

Since posting this thread, the article that took first position and bumped my site back to second, has now moved down to position 8, so I now own 3 positions on the first page.

So your thoughts are certainly worth noting!

This is the goal I always reach out to achieve.

The thing is that your site home page and each article on third-party sites is a doorway to your sales page.

If all is done well, readers will eventually reach your sales page.

I personally think that I wouldn't have problem with occupying 2 spots on page 1 with my article and my site. I would like to think that my site would rise naturally above it anyway! if not then something is wrong
