The New Serious Threat to Google

I am reading more and more about GigaBlast

People say it is set to challenge Google.

Apparently been created by a New Mexican Software Engineer,
and some say it's producing better search results than big G.

Does anyone use it regularly ?

Can Google really be toppled ?

Facebook has overtaken Google for traffic so why not another one ? Will be difficult to achieve though, so we will have to wait and see ?

Facebook has taken over Google for traffic because it is a social networking site.

In terms of a 'search engine' competitor it will be very difficult to take over Google anytime soon.

The only real threat to Google is Facebook. They have the traffic and can establish a search engine that will compete against Google.

Gigablast has been around for years. Its SERPs suggest that it is easy to spam too, and relies too much on keywords in domains.

Same here, while this upstart may have some interesting features to offer, unless it becomes popular somehow among the mainstream users I doubt that it'll make any significant dent in Google's market share.

Well so much for Gigablast !

        Just to summarize:

        1) Looks like nobody has heard of it
        2) Nobody likes the name
        3) Nobody would remember the name
        4) Nobody likes the search results layout
        5) Nobody thinks the search results are any good.

I don't think it has a lot going for it then.

        I bet Google is relieved

I think Google has something Gigablast doesn't... that something is brand.

The amount of times you hear people say "Google it" when referring to the internet, shows that it is quite stuck in the mind of the consumers. Yes, I understand as we are all into the IM scene we will be more likely to see the other competitors, but for an everyday person who may use the internet for shopping/social networking... etc then Google is their first choice.

Facebook is the one to watch, with them testing their new search bar... It could make things interesting to say the least... Two large companies battling it out.

I don't think people are really searching for a better search engine. When Google took over, search results sucked. Now they don't. So I'm not sure what would compel people to switch.

      I agree in principle Dave.

I remember reading an article about a year ago that was talking about the challenges that Bing is having in overcoming Google.

The author (a well-known SEO person, although I cannot remember who at the moment :p) documented several examples where Bing results were better than Google, and a few more examples where Google still ruled the results.

He went on to say that given the examples of Bing crushing Google, you would think that Bing could take market share. But at the time the article was written, Bing had been live for nearly a year and had only drained market share from Yahoo.

He observed that most people using Google do so by habit. He noted that many people like me have the Google toolbar installed, and we use it to start most searches.

He said that Bing winning market share from Google was going to be just as difficult as it is for me to quit smoking.

Often times, it is not the desire for nicotine that keeps us smoking, but rather the habit of having something in our hands and mouths. Which is also why a lot of people will gain a lot of weight when they quit smoking. :p

Before people will switch the "habit", they will need to realize that Bing is crushing Google in the quality game in a number of instances. But if people try Bing and only see those queries where Google still reigns supreme, the battle will be lost quickly, and people will return to Google.

People will need to see the Bing crush to consider changing. And then they must actively decide to change their habits, before Bing can win the war.

So now that the OP is talking about Gigiblast, the challenge remains the same. Who knows if it has better search results? And if it does have better search results, that is only a very small part of the challenge they will face if they hope to unseat Google.

When I met my girlfriend, I was surprised to find thet she was a Yahoo searcher and even though I do what I do and she hears about Google all the time with me, she is still a Yahoo searcher. Just what she likes, I guess.

        Miles faster than Google.

Competition to keep google motitaved is good.

However, I have never Myspaced, Yahooed, General Motored or Enroned ... but I have Googled alot even when I'm using Bing.

The competition for Google is from Bing / Yahoo and the big $$$ budgets they can spend to be competitive. Not from a search engine with no brand awareness.

Bing, whilst it still has a long way to go IS slowly increasing market share month on month, often at Google's expense.

Bing seems the next most likely candidate to become a thorn in Google's side (Facebook already is), especially considering its partnership with Facebook. That could do a lot to help break habits, simply because many of Facebook's 500 million users will probably like it when they discover they can see their friends "likes" displayed within the search results on Bing.

Any company can be toppled. I remember the days when Yahoo! was number one and people said Google would never overtake it. Google can be toppled, especially if they get sloppy. But if I were gambling man I would not bet on Gigablast.
