WordPress Download Page Security

Greetings to All,

First off, I hope I am setting up my first thread correctly. I am new to your forum, so please be patient with me if I ask some stupid questions. I first put my question on an existing thread discussing Brent Jacoby's great post entitled, "How To Make Your WordPress Sites {Almost} Unhackable"; and Brent suggested that I start my own thread.

Brent's post was an "unbelievably informative" post. I can't believe how much I learned that I was doing wrong. I'm going to go back and implement many of the issues that he suggested.

Okay, let me apologize in advance for the length of this first post; I will make any future posts much more concise. Like I said, I am an older gent that is amazed at what you younger folks have accomplished with Internet Marketing; it truly is amazing and you need to be proud of yourselves.

I am getting ready to launch my first ebook. I am creating several ebooks (and videos later) in the DIY and Handyman niches. I know that that probably sounds boring to a lot of you, but it's what I enjoy writing about. I am using a WordPress platform with a template to create my sales page/minisite. I am using the "WP-Sales Page" template from the "Go to Guys" and have set it up as the "static" home page.

I have another separate, but related domain name which I have also set-up on a templated WordPress platform. I use this one as my squeeze/opt-in page which directs folks to my main site. It has a high quality (in my opinion) free ebook give-a-way for the opt-in. I have put considerable time and energy into both the free ebook as well as my main product.

Just as an aside, I have acquired three more domain names which I plan to use in three more squeeze pages to also direct to my main sales page (I'm assuming this will work, if not please let me know if this is a bad idea).

I am not concerned with affiliate marketing, at this point, and will only be using PayPal to handle the orders (possibly Google Checkout later). I'm also using AWeber for my auto responder.

Brent mentioned several ways to make your WP site more secure and I have full intentions on implementing them. My big frustration lately has been my failure to find a, not too difficult to install yet effective, way to protect my thank you/download pages for my main product as well as the free ebook.

The other issues that are important to me is that I am able to use my own custom thank you/download pages as well as my custom "Add To Cart" buttons. I have learned on my own how to use Photoshop (what a neat piece of software) and I have put considerable time into composing the thank you/download pages, buttons, etc.

As I said earlier, I have really been frustrated in trying to find something that will work for both my squeeze page and sales page. I have looked at several products and purchased several more, only to find out that they aren't really adapted to work with WordPress or that they are difficult with sketchy and/or convoluted instructions.

I have been looking at DLGuard. From what I have read, it is a very fine product, but a little more than what I want to pay right now. I hope it is not a forum etiquette faux-pa to mention products by name; as I said I am new to forums.

Anyway, I have also looked at E-Junkie and it seems to be a very good service. I'm not sure it would be the best pick for me in regard to their policy of having a limited number of "free transactions" for my free product on my squeeze page.

I won't bore you with the long list of other products I have tried, including ideas of cloaking links and URL's. I look at you folks as the experts and would really appreciate any recommendations you would be willing to give me on protecting my downloads or any other advice you are willing to share.

One last comment, as mentioned earlier in this "epistle", I want to acknowledge and give kudos to the fact that you younger folks are doing a terrific job in developing and enhancing the Internet Marketing phenomena.

At 63 years old I have owned and operated a total of nine businesses in my lifetime ranging from services, retail, wholesale and lastly CEO and owner of a manufacturing plant. When it is all "said and done", I believe that the age of "brick and mortar" commerce is nearly at an end; and you, young folks, are standing at the gateway of a new era of world commerce!

Let me see if I can condense this for you.

You are looking for a way to provide a private members area for the downloads, correct?

You can find several versions of plugins to do this with a google search. And the pricing will be very inexpensive and should hold you over until you do decide to go with something that allows additional tracking or functionality.

      • Jill,

Thanks for responding. Once again, you'll have to be patient with me. I'm not sure about the membership. My WP site is strictly set up to use "pages" with no "posts" what-so-ever. I am not using the site for blogging; I'm just using WP with a sales page template to come up with a small minisite that promotes my "how-to" e-books and videos.

        Thanks . . . . Gary

    • Mike,

Thanks, and I'll be looking for it.

    • AnniePot,

Thanks for the tip; I'll check your two suggestions out. One of the things that I have noticed is that all of the products that I have checked out so far requires you to go through a payment processor to provide download protection.

E-Junkie as well as PayPal (I think) will allow you to download a zero cost item, but I'm not sure how to do it. E-Junkie provides the feature, but limits the number of free downloads (you have to pay more money for addtional free downloads).

I'll check out your two suggestions, once again I'm really ignorant about the "membership" issue. I'm not using my WP site for blogging at all. I'm just using a WP platform with a "Sales Page" template to come up with my mini-site.

      Thanks. . . . Gary
