Adwords NOT MAKING SENSE!

The campaign and ad group are setup for Trevor Linden. Trevor just retired from the NHL (professional hockey) and we are trying to drive traffic to his official site.

I had an ad up with a quality score of 6 for the term Trevor Linden - broad, phrase and exact match. Here is that ad:

Trevor Linden Face 2 Face
View Linden's personal memoriabilia
& take pictures in the locker room.
Linden16.com

I realized that I didn't have the keyword Trevor Linden in the ad text so I changed the ad:

Meet Trevor Linden
Meet Trevor Linden and view his
personal Trevor Linden memorabilia!
Linden16.com

being split tested against...

Trevor Linden Face 2 Face
View Trevor Linden's memorabilia &
sit down to talk with Linden $867.
Linden16.com

I thought that these ads would bump the keyword "Trevor Linden" up to a 7 or 8 because of the presence of more "Trevor Linden" in the ad.

What happened instead is it is now giving me a quality score of 5 and my 'required lowest bid for the front page" has been raised quite a bit.

Why is this happening and what should I do?

Thanks in advance guys!

Have a great day!!!

What's on the webpage? Does it mention Trevor Linden? Use Google's keyword tool to scan the site and see what keywords it is suggesting and that might provide a clue. Are you bidding on keywords that are relevant to the page?

    Two things come to mind...

The first is the exclaimation point in the ad, I'd get rid of it.

The second, and this is in no way a knock on the artistic value of the gateway page, but Google doesn't like to treat those pages with much love.

Even after the page fades to the next page, and again, no knock on the artistic value, there is very little tie-in to the ads. You need to keep your ad verbage and the landing page verbage in lock-step. You don't have that here.

Also, if you are looking to drive traffic using PPC you need to take into account that the TIME it takes for the visitor to get to the page that relates to the ad is important. The site matters, but not as much as the page you are linking to.

If you created a landing page for the PPC ads that immediately took the visitor to some content that Google would judge as 'content', i.e. verbage, your score will increase, and your bids will drop.

That, of course, precludes the use of an artistic gateway page and a follow-up page that is also heavily skewed by the graphic.

    Hi-

The previous poster is correct google does not treat the real pretty sites with much love. This seems to be the norm with them. you may try yahoo they seem to be more tolerant with pretty pages.

    good luck to you

Shouldn't you start with "Hi, my name is .... , I'm new here, maybe it's a little rude to ask a question before contributing but I'll just give it a try?" Or something like that????

    Hi honey!

I would use the link: LINDEN16.COM | OFFICIAL SITE OF TREVOR LINDEN

    instead of the front page.

And there are a couple of funny details... you mention "face to face", but when you get there there is no face, cute butt though...

the link name... if memorabilia is a main keyword, add it...

here is the text in the page: Remember Trevor's illustrious NHL career with one of three limited edition, autographed pieces of official memorabilia from his final game at GM Place.

Use variations of this in the ads...

    The first one;

    Trevor Linden Face 2 Face
    View Linden's personal memoriabilia
& take pictures in the locker room.
    Linden16.com

the ad is not targeted enough. Something like this:

    Trevor Linden exclusive memorabilia
    Autographed. Trevor Linden waving
to fans after his final NHL game.
LINDEN16.COM | OFFICIAL SITE OF TREVOR LINDEN

might worth trying... the other ads have the same problem... they are not providing what they promise in the landing page and they are not targeted enough.

Why don't you google: "nba memorabilia" and get some ideas?

    mmm I actually behaved!

    PPC is soo much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    RDG :p

Adwords makes perfect sense, once you know the language

What so many people forget is that it isn't just the keywords on your page and ad that make up the quality score. Its the CTR of your ad as well.

What is the CTR of the ads? If its low you need to make them more enticing to click on.

Don't forget the main component: the random number generator.
