Momentum...It's More Powerful Than You Realize

The last few days I've been very busy with non IM stuff.

To start with, I had to do some things for my daughter, my wife, my church
and a friend of mine. All of these took enormous amounts of time away from
my business. Today at 4:01, is the first time since 8:30 this morning that I
even touched the computer. Yesterday, I was sick as a dog and hardly did
a thing, after getting home from Church. Saturday wasn't that great a day
either.

In fact, I've done so little work the last 4 days that I am starting to feel
out of sorts from it.

And yet, I've sent out over 60 thank you emails in regard to sales I've made
over those 4 days. Some of you may have received one yourself.

And then I started to realize something (because I will admit that I am the
biggest worry wart on the planet when it comes to my business). All the
work that I've put in over these last 6 years has built up a momentum that
isn't going to just die over night.

In these last 4 days that I have done almost nothing....

Over 60 sales
Over 40 new optins

It isn't going to just vanish because I took a few days to either do other
things or wish I could have replaced my head with a bucket of ice.

Momentum is probably the most amazing thing in this business. Once you
build a list, and treat that list with respect, you essentially have an income
for many years.

I looked to see where some of those opt ins came from these past 4 days.

5 of them came from articles that I wrote over a year ago.

2 came from a guest blog that I write for.

3 came from a report that I uploaded to those free uploads directories...

I didn't even think anybody would still find that report today. But they did.

And the more stuff I put out there, the more momentum I'm going to build
for the future.

Your stuff never dies. If it's quality to begin with, there will always be
prospects who will find it and act on it.

Here's my point, and it's the even bigger one.

If you're just starting out, I know it looks like the road ahead is so long
and winding that there's no way you're ever going to reach the end of it.

Well, you won't reach the end of it...not ever. It doesn't end. It keeps
going. But what happens is, over time, you discover that you're traveling
on that road and suddenly there are a few cars on either side asking you
for directions, and then a few more cars, until one day, you feel like a
traffic cop.

I know you don't see it now, but trust me, if you keep plugging at it, the
day will come when you'll have so much momentum, you can actually take
a few days off and your business won't crumble to dust.

I'm the same, sometimes I feel that if I'm not at my computer, my business will cave. However every time I come home from an outing.. I can't help but feel my cheek muscles raise my lips into a smile as I see the words "Notification of Payment Received" repeated throught my email account.

Thanks for the inspiration Steven. Always love reading your threads.

    Hi Steven.

    Another interesting post and perspective.

I find it so gratifying as well to be able to go and do other things knowing that stuff I have written, posted, blogged about etc. is out there working for me all the time.

Hope you're feeling better now btw!

That's the perfect business model I'm striving for, replication and automation. Nice with the 60 plus sales for doing nothing, good work or ahem...no work, hehehe.

Momentum is surely the best thing in this business or in any business for that matter. After all Issac Newton himself put it adequately in his First Law

"Things will continue to move indefinitely until acted upon by an external force"

Seems like you were acted upon by "external forces" which forced you to go on a 4 day break!

But 60 plus sales for doing nothing is still darn good.

Agree with Daniel: ""Notification of Payment Received"" is the best Email subject line Ever

you are exactly right....you can't see grass about to sprout but it's all working underneath the ground where we can't see it and then voila there it sprouts.

The same goes for internet marketing.

I NEVER focus on the sales that I didn't make on a particular day BUT the sales that I've made and the ones that I KNOW are coming.
And EVERY DAY I express gratitude for the good things in my life.

    Positive post Steven,

Momentum as you put it Steve is a great thing. What other business can you be in where you put in the effort up to 18 months ago and still get paid for it today? Simply great.

Love your information and your insights on the forum.

Absolutely Steven. It often takes hard work to get everything into motion, but once it's all in motion, much less effort to keep it going. Especially if your business is gathering speed.

Also, here's another perspective... Years ago I was nuts about distance running. I was one of those who tended to overtrain and get injured all the time. When I inevitably got injured I used to worry about how I was losing speed and fitness every day I couldn't run. But what I found was that my times continued to improve... BECAUSE I couldn't train so much.

Similarly, I believe that if you have a tendency to 'over work', then taking time-out is probably a good thing. That's often the time when you're able to get some perspective, clear your mind and have those breakthough ideas pop into your head.

What's more, even if you're busy or sick and don't feel as though you're making any kind of productive use of that non-IM time... you can often come back to work and Bang! find yourself suddenly filled with ideas/solutions.

Anyway, that's not to suggest YOU overwork, but just another perspective on the value of taking time away from the business.

Of course, I wish I could say I always follow my own advice...!

Momentum helps at the start of your business as well.

Without it many people would just do so much each day and end up going nowhere.

Momentum can push you into actually acheiving something. When you start a new project, it's momentum that drives you towards completing it.

I've lost count of the 18 hour days I've done in this business simply because I had the momentum and drive to continue.

Now I'm hoping that I canreach that stage in the future when momentum can be used to describe my business' earnings instead of just my efforts in plugging away at my business.

      Thank you yet again Steven.

      Mark

PS - I can't wait for your post next year where you're going to take us all on a journey that explains where you earned your money. It's gonna be one hell of a ride!

Take care, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

    Hi Steven,

Thanks for sharing all that. In the whole post,
I think those are the very words that newbies
and struggling IMers need to hear.

I haven't "made it" yet but I'm going to keep
plugging at it until the momentum stage hits.

It's my favourite thing about the Internet - I still get revenue from things I did 10 years ago. Some of them I don't even remember where or what I did - but the money still comes.

    Agreed Steven 100%!

If you lose momentum your business will deteriorate, no doubt. I always think that if I worked so hard to build this far, then I am not going to cease the momentum to go back to where I started!

Keep it going, just do something!
