It is a big scam where I live actually. There are upper middle class kids who dress like "street kids" to do "squeegying" basically just cleaning up car windows at traffic lights when cars stop. They make that much money and sometimes more in a day, and then turn around and go to their nice homes. Using that money for partying and other not so great things.

it bothers me quite a bit actually, because I like to help people in need.

That is despicable, James. I have also heard of lazy poor people doing it here - instead of putting in an honest day's work somewhere, they panhandle for money by standing at a major street or next to a highway all day long, usually raking in several hundred dollars in the process.

They're taking the easy way out by taking advantage of people's pity, and are also cheating themselves in the process.

I just don't give them any money. When you give them food...they are looking at you like "damn I can't get beer or cigarettes with that!". My favorite two signs:

1. Lear jet in shop
2. I ain't gonna lie...I need a beer.

This is funny, but also mostly true. I have come across many who just outright ask me for money to get gas, cigarettes or food (these are the most common lies), but when I offer to actually go get it for them, they decline and don't want me to help them!

So far, in my countless encounters with these supposedly 'needy' people, there has been only one occasion where this person actually accepted my help and went ahead to get a burger to eat!

I'm not sure it is a good cause without knowing the back story.

Several friends of mine are blind and are more than fully self sufficient by (gasp) actually working.

That said, I loved the way the commercial developed to drive home the point that words do matter.
