Are press releases effective?

I know that press releases were quite easy to rank on Google some time ago and people were driving thousands of visitors using this method.

However it seems that lately the big G doesn't share the same love with the press release websites anymore.

Did anybody have success lately with ranking press releases for any keywords? I would love to know which sites are the most effective these days for submitting . I noticed for example that Prlog.org doesn't even appear on Google News now and was dominating the serps last year.

    According to who?

Submit your press release to webwire.com or prweb.com and once approved, it will be indexed within Google in a matter of minutes.

I agree. I use webwire.com and my press releases always rank quickly and with some backlinks, they can easily hit the first page. Focus on quality, not quantity.

It depends on what your goals are. There is a good bunch of press release sites that have very wide syndications. If you post your press release on them, you will notice a good bunch of backlinks in just a couple of weeks, pointing to your website, with your keywords. And the number of backlinks is growing on autopilot. So again, depends on WHAT you`re submitting press releases for. For some, they work well for getting traffic from the press release itself, while for others, they work extremely well for getting backlinks from related blogs and websites.

I've had great success using webwire.com. Create a compelling headline with your keyword in the title, but make sure it doesn't sound spammy. Most of my press releases are 300 - 350 words and these get the best CTR for me.

Press releases are still effective. My suggestions:
*Don't try to submit it to as many places as possible, but instead focus on a quality submission source.
*Remember to write a news release and not sales copy: find what people are actually going to care about to get people to read and link.
    Just my two cents :-)

I was thinking about some free press release websites, I didn't mention that.

I'll go for webwire as I heard other having success with it. If I could get 1st page I would gladly pay 19 bucks for it.

It's just that I have tested the free ones so far and didn't do so well, even with some backlinks. How long does it stay on the first page once it shows there? (I'm talking about longer tail keywords with less competition)

I do believe they are effective. Otherwise, why would I offer my services in writing PRs?

But recent marketing studies tend to disagree with me and say PRs are not that effective. They're like a mask worn on your face.

I just hope clients that request PRs don't believe the recent studies.

*by PRs I mean Press Releases.

For those of you who've been successful (money-wise) with press releases, what do you generally try to use as the outbound link from the press release? Your site's blog, squeeze page, landing page, or sales page?

It varies depending upon the selected option you choose when making payment. If you select an option that allows links within your PR, then I follow Lisa Parmley's system ; one link to a category page, and another to the home page, using primary and secondary keywords.

I used webwire for a press release on april 6th and it was on page 1 of both organic google and google news for a week with the 3 word phrase I used. I just checked and today it is on page 2 of google news and page 1 of google. I did some backlinking to it but will do more to get the press release back to page 1 in google news. Webwire allows 3 anchor text links. Two of the anchor text phrases I see on page 1 of organic google. The 3rd one I don't see at all in first 5 pages but it is more competitive.

Prlog was high up before google panda update but it probably can still do well with ample backlinks.

I have been thinking about using press releases to help me with traffic. As of right now, I don't know anything about them except for what I have read from this thread. So my question is, is it as simple as writing about something and uploading the content to press release sites?

still effective. I had a press release sit in the top 10 for about 10 days I think it was. It managed to get some pretty impressive backlinks to it which kept it there for a while. gone now but still got some excellent traffic out of it.

What kind of backlinks to you guys use for press releases? They must be indexed fast as they don't stay up on the serps for long.

My goal for now would be to send some traffic to my landing pages and not for backlinks.

I find this better than article marketing when you have an effective method of ranking them for more competitive keywords and keep them so for say a week. Even if it's gone eventually you get good traffic from a keyword that you could probably never rank for or it would take you months.

If you write something that is newsworthy it can be a very effective way to promote a product or service. If you simply send press releases that lack content you are unlikely to have much success in gaining traction.

They are also great for getting the word out. I believe it was yesterday where someone posted they got on the news due to their press release. Press releases aren't only for backlinks. Most people think that they are, but truly they aren't. If your press release or article is good, then it will be syndicated. That's where backlinking comes into play once numerous people have your press release or article.

A lot has changed recently as Google has changed it's algirithms. Therefore what worked a few months ago, doesn't work anymore. I guess there's no harm in putting out more content but there's nothing guaranteed with Google and the internet as things are constantly changing.

because as far as I know Press releases are still a very powerful marketing tool that any marketer (not just internet marketers) should use!
I was referring to the free press release websites such as Prlog.org. I had no success in ranking on Google with them lately after the last algorithm change. However I can't say the same about the paid ones as I haven't tried them yet, they might work better. I will try with webwire.com and see what happens.

I use PR's mainly for the backlink juice they provide. Often a single backlink from webwire or Prnews will send a site flying up the SERP's for non-competitive (doesn't mean low search count) keywords! I love them for that and that alone.

Very interesting thread, especially since I've never before done a PR.

One question to those who are experienced with this: I looked over the Webwire site and read their example of a news release directed toward internet readers (as opposed to the media.)

At the end of the PR, the author's name and phone number is listed. Whether it is real or not, I don't know. But the example was about a company, so that's not the same as a personal number.

I'm used to article marketing where this is not an issue.

How do you deal with this?

You need to specify actual contact details. I just listed my websites email address and my home phone number. No big deal.

      Garbage.

My last press release was syndicated across over 500 news related websites. Some with high PR. Not only were the press releases indexed within Google within a matter of minutes, but the site I was promoted received an immediate boost.

May I ask what were you promoting? Was it your own product or some affiliate offers?

Im not sure why youre asking me this?

In total I probably spent close to $600 on various SEO methods. Press releases, content development and paid directories.

I still dont have a ROI, but Im close, and no doubt within a month or two, Ill be in the black.

You have to think more long term, rather than sweating it over every expense.

This is from a PR Newbie (Me): I just wrote my first press release like 2 days ago. Press Releases ARE effective. I also wrote it for free using Alyonafrendo's PR Traffic Boost ebook. It was #1 on the first page of Google News for my keyword term in a matter of minutes/hours. I had never written a PR before until now and I submitted it using Webwire.com.

These are much easier than writing articles as even Webwire recommends that the ideal PR is 250 words. If you write it in the right "style", it will be effective. As we all know, writing articles need to be atleast 400 words if you are submitting them to sites like Ezines and it needs to be unique and these do not go to the top of search engines at all unless its for something no one is looking for - and you need to write a ton of them.

Lets see, 1 PR at 250 words which will rank or a ton of articles at a minimum 400 words each and no guarantee of even ranking. I think I will take the Press Release route.

Thanks for your insight Michael, I'm glad it worked out for you. I'm just curious about a few things:

                  1. How competitive is your keyword?

                  2. Are you ranking on Google main search also?

                  3. How many views have you gotten so far?

i think i had a good luck in my PR.

Well here's the deal with PR's... You won't get penalized for dupes because it's the essence of PR's, the more the same PR is spread around, the more popular it is and they get indexed in Google quickly as well and offer some serious link juice. You can do a $400 (ballpark) and get massive exposure through all sorts of media. See if you can get a hold of Daniel Tan, he's the creator of backlink syndicator, I'd recommend that WSO and get more info on it.
