Facebook Fan Page names and getting shut down

I understand that Facebook will take away your fanpage if it is generic. So I have found the best way to avoid this is to include a word(s) that describe you niche and then also include your name, like Learn to Make Money Online with Stacy Jetton.

You have to decide on your name early, because you can only change it up to a limited number of fans.

I think by generic, fb will penalize pages like. "Make Money Now" or "Product Review"

Since the idea behind fanpages is to rally fans behind a particular cause, person or product, pages that fail to have a particular cause, person or product as the subject will be deleted.

        It kind of makes sense.

You can name your page after 25 likes and you can change your name up to 100 likes. After 100 likes, you are stuck with your choice.

Facebook will also merge your group if it includes trademarks. When we launched the OREO facebook page a few years ago, Facebook merged *every* group on FB that had the word "Oreo" in it. 1+ million fans overnight.

I am pretty sure that the groups that had been merged were summarily closed which is why you can't find a new OREO group on FB with more than like 4k users. I could be wrong though - they might have merged every group with the official Oreo page without shutting down all of the individual groups.

Either way, the moral of the story is, when you deal with trademarks online, be ready to have whatever it is you built taken away.

Facebook took away my publishing rights on one of my Facebook Pages that had over 57,000 fans. That page has a money orientated silly name.

    Very true.

And if you do get an extra website/blog, it's good to add a Liked box widget there as well.

    Cheers,

  • I do think it's worth being careful with choices.

Facebook fan pages are going through a huge growth period, which is excellent, but as we've seen so many times, they're bound to reconsider this at some point in the future and start making more widespread changes to what they allow.

Fan pages which start highly focused, and which maintain that with the content posted on them, are much more likely to survive.

This just sounds like another one of those things that to me is irritating although there may be some reason for it, I don't understand why they should be allowed to let you build a fan base and then just take it away.

Sounds like google and the government bs to me.

Sorry if I am mistaken in my comparison but I hate the things that are going on all around us right now. I live in Illinois and at the moment really hate my governor but some of the things that people with power are putting us through just make me soooo mad.

okay all done now. thank you for the heads up and I hope mine aren't to "generic"
such as "family fun stuff saving" and "what to do when your bored". NO, I am not plugging, just looking for opinions as to are these generic or am I safe?

    Thanks,
    Kim

I have also heard that if your page gets either too many people,
you have listed in the wrong category (webpage--when it is a business page, or vice versa), they may turn it into a category page.

I have seen pages with Millions of fans and they are category pages.
Facebook (along with it's other problems--security) will take it from you and never warn you. Just what I heard although I have no verification on it so if anyone wants to dispute it, go right ahead!

        It's pretty simple.

No one owns a hobby like 'Scrapbooking' or 'Cooking' or 'Making Money Online' so why should one person be in control of a page like that? They shouldn't be and that is why something like that will, when Facebook find it (usually around the 10,000 fan mark pages have to be verified) get turned into a community page and you will lose your publishing rights.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this at all.

Fan pages were designed so official representatives of products, services, celebrities, websites, etc, could keep in contact and interact with their fans. If you are not an official representative of a topic then don't create a fan page around it - or you risk having your rights taken away from you at any time.

If you are serious about a topic then create a simple website around it and create your fan page based around your website. That way your fan page is representing an actual website and you will not risk having it taken away from you.

This is good advice. Facebook gives you the user base after all, so it is in their powers to do what they think is right. They do not want to confuse their users with too many generic pages so these will be taken away if they become popular. It is always better to look ahead and choose an appropriate category and page name so that future problems can be avoided.
