Back after a long break, pondering life!

by Karen Keyes 8 replies
Hi everyone,

I`ve been a member here for quite some time but took a break about a year ago, as certain life events unfolded.

Now I find myself down a new path. Back in January I got laid off from a company I was with for about 14 years, let`s just say that was rather eye-opening.

Since then I`ve been on sort of an extended vacation, enjoying time that was lost to me in the past. But I know it cannot go on forever and I must face reality and figure out what I`m going to do. A huge part of me is excited to pursue IM full time, something I`ve always wanted to do. But I`m not sure I can do that, because I really want to be in the service industry, dealing with the public.

I'm considering going back to school at some point for nursing (huge career change for me, software programmer!), but might have to wait a year for openings. Meanwhile, I'm going to delve back into my IM projects for now. I will probably offer writing services soon, with a goal of building up a small ongoing client base.

Anyhow it's great to get back into the swing of things!

Lovin' life,
Karen

    Karen,

    First, welcome back.

The magic bullet is to a two letter word...

    Do.

Follow that with a 3 letter word...

    Try.

The words get longer after that, but those 5 letters will take you a long way... FWIW, the longer words are stuff like:

    "Fail quickly"

    "Adapt and overcome"

    "Learn from everything"

    "Try some more"

    and most importantly:

    "Smile".

Have a great day and all success!

You should establish yourself as JV manager. This involves communicating with people and establishing relationships.

You should do some offline stuff if you like working with people. Big bucks in that

        Welcome back Karen!

I first started in IM when I got laid off from a job. It's been quite an experience to say the least!

I will have to agree with what Steve says--get into the offline segment of marketing. It's a great way to get out and meet people in your community who are in need of web services.

Both excellent points. Taking action is the only way you will actually get anywhere. A lot of folks miss this step.

If you can find some offline way to bring in some income it will take a lot of pressure off you to earn. I currently have a day job which is great for fueling my online business. Hopefully soon I will be doing IM full time, but for now I pay the bills from my offline job.

    Hey Karen,

I think you can combine your interest in IM and service.
You can try offline marketing to pick up local clients-- if you want face time.

Then you can host free webinars for leads and consulting webinars for a fee. Use your corporate background to market the skills you learned. I'm sure you can become a consultant this way for super low overhead. Then work for an online community for example.

    Hope that helps!
