Built Site for Murdered teen girl and Someone's Stealing Bandwidth

Can someone help me out please!

I built a free site for the family for a murdered girl. The site was getting about 200 visitors a month using about bandwidth was under 400 meg - and not it has skyrocketed to 4+ Gigs in half a month.

I have 2 song files on the website mp3. Do you think someone is linking to them therefore stealing my bandwidth?

If so, will me removing the files eliminate this. What ashame - stealing from a dead girls site.

Just rename the files and relink them in your site with the new name. If someone is stealing, theirs won't work anymore.

if you look at awstats in cpanel for the site you should be able to see what's going on. Is that a possibility? If it is the mp3 then maybe make a YouTube video with the song and embed the video into the site? Just a thought

Ok yes, I have access to the cpanel - the views on it is doubled so looks like someone is linking to it but I can't tell who. I just deleted them - because they may keep doing it. Such ashame. Maybe I will do as you suggested with the youtube.

If you host with hostgator, in cpanel go to Security > prevent hotlinking and enable that. Don't know if other cpanels have that.

Sounds like maybe you weren't getting any ACTUAL visitors, then, just calls to your images, etc.

Every cPanel I've ever used has this option.

Depending on what stats your host provides, you may also be able to track the offending IP and ban it.

It is probably doable in cpanel, but at least in DirectAdmin, you can go through awstats and find out how many times each file was downloaded, including mp3s. It will also tell you how much bandwidth was taken up by that file. Whichever one it was, you can just change the name and that will wreck any links out there now.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way... My eyes my eyes.

I would just rename the folder it takes 2 seconds.

THAT breaks my heart, it really does... :'(

Here's my suggestion to you. Upload it to YouTube! You can play a soundtrack and just put a picture of the person. You can use screencast-o-matic [dot com] to make the video, it would save your bandwidth since you'd be using YouTube bandwidth and not your own

All you have to do next is go to the YouTube video and get the embed code, place it on your site, if you're using WordPress, make sure you're using the html (or source) view. Save your bandwidth and save this person's website!

Hope this helps and my most sincere condolences, I know how it is to lose someone... If it's a video with the person it it, you can always use WMP (Windows Media Player) and again use Screencast-O-Matic and record and easily upload to YouTube.

    Hope this helps

In my experience, disabling hotlinking may take away your traffic. I saw a 98% drop in what I got for visits when I disabled hotlinking. The suggestion to rename the files may help, but your music links may have done a bit of viral sharing. Did you set this site up for donations to the family or just exposure to the tragedy? There may be a way to allow one song to be downloaded, but ask for a kind donation to access others, not sure how you want to proceed.

You can look for the titles of the songs and see how many places direct link to the site. If they were placed up there as a thank you or tribute, not much that a person can do unless you delete them.

Thanks everyone. The music was embedded in the site so when the site loaded the song played - it was not a file to download. I just took the songs off - maybe later I will do as a couple of you suggested and make a youtube video with her pictures and the songs and put that on the site.
