How Do I Change The Permalink In A Wordpress Blog Post? I have published a blog post and it is coming up as an error. I made a custom permalink now I do not see an option to change the permalinks settings back to the original? Anyone know an easy way to do this? Should be an easy fix....

Just FYI, I find that often I can find out such things (WP "how-to" stuff for example) by doing a YouTube search - it's amazing what you can find sometimes!

This might be of interest to all (hello Peter, long time),

The long standing SEO theory on permalinks might be in question...well, it's not in question with me anymore as I'm sure you will All understand the logic.

This is a very important and often-ignored bit from the WordPress codex:

For performance reasons, it is not a good idea to start your permalink structure with the category, tag, author, or postname fields. The reason is that these are text fields, and using them at the beginning of your permalink structure it takes more time for WordPress to distinguish your Post URLs from Page URLs (which always use the text "page slug" as the URL), and to compensate, WordPress stores a lot of extra information in its database (so much that sites with lots of Pages have experienced difficulties). So, it is best to start your permalink structure with a numeric field, such as the year or post ID.

So, starting with anything other than a number strand will produce a verbose page rule which will affect performance, especially if you have many pages on your site. And, after reading this, you might decide performance outranks SEO. Let your content do the work!

Here are a couple of links that will explain it better than I could:

          http://wpmu.org/the-best-wordpress-permalink-structure-for-scaling-performance-and-seo/
Category in Permalinks Considered Harmful » Otto on WordPress

Now, changing your permalinks can be a messy problem too, leading to 404 pages, canceling indexed pages, and squashing your inbound links. Yeah, I know! But, just changing the custom structure is simple and changes site wide so don't fret. The challenges occur only when you change the perm in the post itself.

Take a look at the whole page on permalinks in the WP Codex, as well as Otto's post to guide you.

I see a change happening in SEO...

If you change your link, and you have a significant amount of backlinks to that URL, your going to lose them unless you do a 301 Redirect from the old URL to the new one.

You should change your permalinks to SEO friendly by adding this to the custom structure area: "/%category%/%postname%/" without quotes of course.

Also, the reason you were probably getting an error might be because the links weren't updated on the actual posts...

    Good Luck

Whatever you do, DO NOT do this.

This is erroneous misinformation, propagated my many "experts" it is incorrect, see Troyy55 above.

Well, it's not actually 'incorrect,' but it could slow down your blog's performance.

        According to the WP Codex:

"... it is best to have at least two path segments in your post's permalink structure such as /%year%/%postname%/ or even /posts/%postname%/."

Yes, you are quite correct Brad, I was trying to create some dramatic effect

My hope is to stop people blindly following bad advice that is bandied about, by people who do not know any better, and seek only to increase their post count and break the cycle of misinformation that is created for the benefit of newcomers.
