Amazon s3 Confusion..can someone help please?

Hey guys, ok am totally confused right now
trying to sus out if getting an amazon s3 account
for my video hosting is the best solution forward

until then I was/am with Screencast Pro ($9.99 a month / $99 a year)

but as my business grows, the 25GB limit for storage is tiny with screencast and Bandwidth Usage: is 200GB (which is not bad)..main issue is storage

then someone recomennded amazon s3 and its great with EVP (easy video player - which seems perfect as I started loving the benefits of that more)

but how the heck does the pricing work, it seems all like another language to me and wish it was as simple as screencast, but seems really cheaper...

i get the storage costs I think...but do not get these things when wortking out my pricing i'll be looking at

    I'm always amazed by how complicated people find the Amazon S3 pricing. It's really quite simple.

    First of all, Reduced Redundancy Storage (RRS) is a new storage option within Amazon S3 that enables customers to reduce their costs by storing non-critical, reproducible data at lower levels of redundancy than Amazon S3’s standard storage. To keep things less confusing just forget about that column at the moment as you will probably just be using the regular S3.

    Storage Pricing:

    $0.14 per GB

    This charge relates to how much data you store on the Amazon S3 server. If you upload files of 3GB in size then your cost for storage of those files per month will be:

    $0.14 x 3 = $0.42

    Request Pricing:

    $0.01 per 10,000 requests

    Every time someone plays a video file or downloads one of your other files, that is a GET request. I wouldn't even worry too much about these charges because you would need to be getting a ton of requests before it was really worth worrying about. The cost is going to be very minimal.

    Data Transfer In:

    $0.10 per GB

    This charge relates to all the data you upload to your Amazon S3 server. So if you upload 3GB worth of files to your Amazon S3 server then the charge will be:

    $0.10 x 3 = $0.30

    Data Transfer Out:

    First 1GB is FREE then $0.15 per GB

    This charge relates to all the download requests from your users. Every time someone watches a video or downloads one of your files. So if you have 1,000 people watch a video of yours that has a file size of 20MB, your charges would be:

    20MB x 1000 = 20GB
    1st GB = FREE
    19 x $0.15 = $2.85

        To be honest, - I've not given much thought to the price per gig etc.

        All I notice is that I have so many files and folders that used to take up a dedicated server at over $200 a month...
        And now I get a hosting bill for a reseller account at $20 a month and average AmazonS3 bill at around $20 a month too!


        So that sold me on using S3

          It is cheap as chips for what it is. I have been using it for over a year now and have never looked back. It's especially great for sites that use a lot of video content. No more worries about your server crashing unnecessarily. I would definitely recommend it.
