Would you recommend cloaking the affiliate links? I know that some people resent obvious affiliate links in ebooks. The URL of affiliate link may also change over time. I know this used to be quite a popular method are people still finding it is effective?

I personally don't cloak the links. As long as it fits in with the theme of the book then it's fine. Plus make sure there are only a few, and your content is solid. If it is people tend to overlook this stuff.

An example would be if you wrote an ebook teaching people how to be a host reseller. You could recommend Hostgator and have a link because it makes sense.

Another method would be to directly address the link to eliminate all fear.

So you have the hostgator affiliate link and right after you say:

"that link is my affiliate link. If you find this method useful, and decide to use hostgator, I'd greatly appreciate you signing up with me. It helps to compensate me for putting together this free ebook."

This direct strategy addresses the fear head on and let's people know you aren't trying to fool them.

As far as links going bad, you can always update your ebook and redistribute it. I also recommend churning out ebooks on a regular basis -- maybe once a month so you have dozens of your affiliate links floating around.

Lastly, you are correct this method used to be popular. A lot of times, the best methods are the ones people move on from because the market is less saturated.

My motto is -- what's old is new, and what's new is old. In other words, tried and true methods will continue to work if implemented correctly.

The main criticism I would have with this approach is that just picking stuff to sell and putting out affiliate links you're not actually building your own business at all. Sure you can be building a list but at some point you need think about what you want to end up with and not just the money.

This sort of strategy often turns into a numbers game where you just keep chasing your tail looking for the next product to launch in order to keep your income up.

It's one of the most common strategies for 'jumping from one thing to another' also because people try their first project and then when only a few sales trickle in they do it again and then look for something else instead.

I think you need a better plan than just keep promoting other peoples products and see what happens.

Andy, if you read my self-improvement thread, you saw my theme was that new people try too hard to find all the answers at once -- when in reality they should be just keeping it simple and taking action.

By doing this, they are giving themselves a sound framework for the future, no matter what avenue they decide to take. The key is just doing something -- ANYTHING!

My target audience is those who post looking for help on getting started. I agree MANY additional ingredients need to be added to build a legitimate business. My goal was to get people to take action, learn a method, and hopefully use that as a bridge to cross over into other methods.

In truth, this method is but a stepping stone to what I hope is greater ventures and success for those who choose.

If this thread gets people to stop thinking, and take action, then my goal is achieved. I believe then the road to success is more visible, and can be paved any way an individual wishes.

At this point, I then believe the framework for a true business can be laid.

Whenever you look behind a person who says "just take action - ANY action!!" you usually find someone who thinks that creating a successful business online is just down to action and luck - "keep trying things until something works and then rinse and repeat" is the classic shout of the suck-it-and-see marketer.

Again, that's fine as long as the things you try have some logic and sense behind them.

Because of the lack of any real business experience of many newbies to IM they actually believe that there's no way to tell what to expect from your actions, therefore you just have to try lots of stuff and see what happens. They convince themselves that this is the only way there is and that this must be what all others are doing too. The problem is - because they don't have any idea what to expect they also have no idea of what timescales to expect things in, and therefore end up running around in circles and are still here 3 years later saying " I've tried everything but can't make a full-time income online - I give up!!!".

It's painful to see.

In a way it's like a fat person who says that they want to be thin and they get busy buying dieting books and adding the odd piece of vegetable to their meal and then say "I must have a slow matabolism" and "I've tried everything to lose weight so I need a gastric band fitted" when the only problem is - they're not doing the very simple things which need to be done. (eat less, eat better and exercise more).

This stuff isn't rocket science but when people think 'any' action counts as forward progress - they're asking for disappointment.

You could say that buying lottery tickets is action towards becoming a millionaire - but in reality it's a dillusion and the fact that it happens for a few other people is the only thing that gives people the sliver of hope that they may get lucky. It's not a plan for success - it's hit and hope with more hope than hit.

So while I respect your efforts in getting people to take action and I absolutely agree that it's important, I really cannot get onboard the 'any action' train as I see that as a really bad way to start a business.

Imagine what your bank manager would say when you asked to borrow $100k for your business and you told him "I'm just gonna take some action - any action. Apparently that puts me ahead of 99% of other people, so I guess I'm bound to succeed".

Andy, what is meant by do ANYTHING is to take some form of action on a money making method. Yes, you have managed to show that ANYTHING can be broad. But in the context of my post, I was saying that it is more important to learn a method and put it into action than it is to just sit and read about methods day after day.

This is from personal experience (and others) -- because the worst roundabout to get caught in within this industry is to keep jumping from one thing to the next and researching new methods each day.

I think it is important to find something that has shown it can work -- ANYTHING -- and put it into action, while ultimately building yourself for the big picture.

ANYTHING refers to anything that can help you learn and make money at the same time.

Yes, any action is not good action. I've tried to make that clear -- hence why I posted a method that has been successful when implemented correctly. I'm not just on here telling people to go fly a kite and hope for the best.

I'm really trying to give them tried and true methods that will help keep things simple, and hopefully increase the odds that they take action.

Yeah, I see your point. But understand I am not here selling a dream. I make it clear in all my posts that being successful is hard work and dedication.

The method I outlined is simple in nature (because it does not include creating a website, doing seo, building software, etc), but it obviously will take work on the part of the individual hoping to achieve success.

That is why I challenged ANYONE to complete a few steps today. I know full well if I told people to try and complete three steps even by May 1, that 95% would do nothing.

I just believe the biggest obstacle is new people continue to search for the RIGHT answer right away when in reality, the right answer takes time to uncover itself through trials and tribulations.

That is why I so strongly encourage people to get moving on a method that's been proven to work, so hopefully they get that action mentality, and can use it as they build their brand in the future.

Thank you for recognizing the efforts, but again, I think you are taking my comments to the extreme of what I really meant.

I'm not telling people to take a massive risk blindly, like spend 100k with no direction. I'm trying to get people started without spending a ton of cash, so they can reap the benefits of taking action and taste some form of success early on.

Your concerns are valid, but my concern is that a newbie may quit before taking ANY action, simply due to information overload.

I would follow the steps outlined and research popular topics. You may find one that really interests you and you enjoy writing about.

If you pigeon hole yourself into one niche it may make for a fluffy ebook with little interest on your part.

Take time to look into what works for you.

I should've added some sort of smiley symbol as I was being sarcastic since the question was so generic that the was really no direct answer. It was a common example of why people get confused when they asked open questions and want closed answers.

Questions like "what is a common conversion rate" don't make sense without some context (i.e which niche, what type of product, how is it being marketed, where is the traffic coming from etc..).

It's like a thread recently about people making false promises in sales letters - they do it because that's what people want to see. (not that they want to see false promises, but some struggling IMers feel they need to make hyped-up claims or people won't buy, because it's those claims they expect / want to see.

Being successful at anything is a complicated business and so I think it's important to know where you're trying to go before you get too busy trying to get there.

You could easily go pick a product and then spend all your time writing articles in order to get traffic and find that you get to $1000 a month when doing it with all your time. But if your bills are $1500 a month and you actually wanted to have a lot of spare time (because you bought into 'IM can make you rich and you work a few hours in your underwear'), you might find that the model you have chosen you literally cannot scale to reach your goals and your love of writing has turned into a hate because you now feel pressured to write about anything and everything, even things you don't like.

You need to at least be clear enough about what you're trying to achieve to know whether the things you're doing have the possibility to get you there.

Loved this post, thanks, taking action separates the wanna be's from the gonna be's! I have been studying under Maria Gudelis and she gives tons of homework to keep us in action mode! I have been working on my first project and this gave me several ideas of other things I can do with this one project. I hope to be helping the newbies one day..so thanks.

Yeah, that is typical. You feel like you are completing so much -- but in the end all you did was a little bit of everything.

As a relative newbie, I have found this suggestion very awesome. I have been trying to be an IM since the beginning of the year and I am trying everything that I can and I am actually ACTING on all of them.

I haven't got a big long specific plan because I don't know which area I want to really settle down with YET. I am trying all sorts of things and the way I see it, I am giving myself a broad education and a good understanding of IM in general.

I haven't made an ebook and tried to give it away as yet but reading this thread it is definately something I want to try. It will be yet another practical exercise I can add to my experience.

I reckon after a year or so, I should have tried enough things out and realized which areas of IM interest me the most and which ones I am good at or bad at, had success with, failed miserably with, and which niches I like or have skills in etc..to make a more selective choice and then I can make my precision grand plan...but at this stage I am gathering skills, knowledge, tricks experience and really I'm just feeling my way around.

So I'm going to do this...as I feel it will be good training for any future IM business plan I will eventually decide on...so thanks for writing this thread man...I haven't seen you before but I can see you might be somebody I should keep my eye on as you (and I might add- Andy) are both people who know what you're talking about and I think I could learn a lot from what you guys say...already have....

Nice post. Thanks for the kind words. Remember, don't beat yourself up because you havent "made it" yet.

I think its good that you've tried a bunch of different things. You've probably found some things that were fun for you, and other things you didn't enjoy doing at all.

This can help narrow down a business plan, and help you to focus on the work that is not only profitable, but enjoyable.

Another thing that goes unsaid a lot, but is EXTREMELY important is that you do not necessarily have to narrow down a "business" to one method.

I personally do many things in IM -- Offline, online, writing, web design, etc.

I think to be successful you need to find a few different things that work, and then MASTER them. This diversification keeps you from putting all your eggs in one basket.

I have a thread in the CPA forum about using the newspaper to make money with CPA offers. This is just another example of building a business in multiple markets.

I hope to share more ideas like the one above if people find them beneficial.

Great post! I started learning about this stuff just this past year, and I've been working on getting traffic to my site. Once I get it to a good number, I will definitely incorporate an e-book with affiliate links!

  I actually started a thread about an ebook I just uploaded to scribd. It hit page 1 of google in just a couple of hours. Another thing you can do is upload the doc to payspree.com and offer 100% commission to all affiliates. Sometimes it's just a matter of doing something.

FWIW to all, WORD has a superb Outline feature that just takes a little time to mess with and understand.

Outline is crucial for two reasons:

1) If you are writing the book, it keeps you organized.

2) If you outsource, you can choose a few different writers and outsource a few chapters to each. In my experience this keeps costs down, and gives you the greatest chance of different writing styles and techniques. You can pick and choose what you want to keep.

I like the idea... it's very unpredicatable as to what will happen and how well something will circulate the net and go viral.

I totally see what Andy says... and of course you could add links to your own squeeze pages and build a list from this very method. It's still quite unpredicatable and potentially difficult to scale with certainty (ie. versus paid traffic).

And finally... yeah it's better to do this or something that sit on the Warrior Forum all night thinking about what to do. A good place to learn how to create a product and get started with Clickbank for zilch.

I want to expand on something in my initial post that people have asked about.

I kind of brushed over it, but it can be a method within itself.

MAKE SURE TO HAVE LINKS TO YOUR WEBSITE IN YOUR EBOOKS!!!

These can be discreetly placed in the footer on each page, on a few pages here and there, or at the end where you give a brief overview of your background and website.

The importance of this CANNOT be understated. By having your website floating around, not only is it possible to have thousands of people reading your book and potentially clicking on your affiliate link, but these same people -- and MANY MORE --will check out your website and see what it's all about.

And how can you take advantage of this, you ask??

You could have your website setup as a landing page with a giveaway in exchange for an opt-in.

You could offer a contest, premium content, or anything else that entices people to sign up.

THIS IS FREE TRAFFIC and can build your list. Then what???? You can send other offers to these people based on the niche you chose to begin with!!

You are building your list and branding yourself as an expert in certain subjects. This is allowing you to capatalize on your ebooks x2!

I came to this forum after reading a free e-book about how stay at home moms can make money... and I have to say, it is nice to have someone just lay out a way to get started like this. I came into this knowing it would be hard work and would take time to learn the ropes, but knowing it would be worth it to be able to stay home as a mother. (My husband and I are trying to get pregnant and since I got laid off I figured it was time to start learning.) I'm still not too sure how this affiliate marketing thing works, but this did help me understand just a little bit more!

Jeremy, it's good that you mentioned instant commission type products, as this'd provide instant gratification for newbies, and hopefully make and keep them more excited about writing these ebooks. I don't really think that there are many digital marketplaces that pay instant commission on non-IM products though - Payspree and RAPbank predominantly sell IM products with some non-IM niches thrown in. This may change in the future though.

Killer info. Amazing to think that every person who views a money making offer online gets so turned on by the money "that" product could make them but they fail to look further and see the simple methods the experienced marketers are using to promote the products. If they saw this instead they would have the key to selling any product on the net.

This is great Jeremy. You know there are hundreds of people on here right now struggling to make money, and you've laid out a plan for them. They could take action on this and be earning money within a few days. This is exactly the way many marketers started out.

I see a lot of people doing this with the e-books via websites where they collect email addresses. I'm just wondering, how hard is it to set up a website like that? And what exactly is the extra benefit? Just the ability to send out newsletter to try and sell more e-books and reports and link to more affiliates?

This is just a simple squeeze page. You can read or watch videos to learn how to do this, or you could head over to Warriors for Hire and get it done for a good price.

By getting email addresses, you can send these people offers down the road to make more $$.

However, it's not just fun and games. Managing a list is a business in itself. You have to constantly provide good FREE content before trying to sell stuff. If you just sell sell sell, people will unsubscribe.

Usually people give out ebooks or something similar in exchange for a sign up. This is to entice people to sign up.

People are more likely to sign up when there is a gift, rather than just: "HEY, give me your email."

Thank you! I've been looking at business models trying to figure out where a good place to start was. It seems the simplest way is spreading a free e-book with affiliate links, and then branching into making a list where I offer the e-book and maybe some reports or something as a free gift for signing up for a newsletter where I would include an article or two and an affiliate link? And of course, I realize this will take time and work to get a list going and get the e-book spread around, just trying to make an outline of what I want to do. And thank you for mentioning pets! That is something I already know tons about and have connections to but didn't really think about!

Just want to say thank you for being so helpful. The business model I picked was writing e-books to sell and compiling an email list, selling my book as well as making money from affiliates in my newsletter, but I don't have any money for web hosting. With this system I can get a handle on writing e-books, distributing, finding traffic, and affiliates without the start up cost and earn money to buy a domain and hosting!

Hey, thanks for your comment.

Prices will vary...however, one thing is for sure -- it will cost more if you outsource a 40 page ebook than if you outsource eight, five page articles.

See where I'm going?

You can find a range of prices for a few pages of articles. Do this eight times with your different chapter topics.....and you have a book!

But if you go out looking to hire an "ebook writer," you WILL spend more.

The most important step is #6. I have had my best income days (greater than $1000) when selling my own products.

Affiliate sales, Adsense, CPA offers are great. Don't get me wrong. But having your own product gives you much more control over how much, and how fast you make money in IM.

You are correct, but remember this. There MUST be a market for your product. You must properly research your niche, and the wants and needs of the people who populate it.

Can't just throw a product and hope it sticks.
