Pop-ups now possible on Facebook pages!

I just recently decided to try a pop-up on my facebook page and it worked.

See this amazing software on this Facebook page

Has anyone tried doing this?

If so, what are you using?

I personally wouldn't bother wasting too much time with this. I can almost guarantee you that the ability to do popups will be very short-lived. I think there are still a lot of things Facebook didn't think about properly when they decided to allow iframe fan pages. Slowly but surely they will find a way to remove all the annoying things like popups. It's definitely not a question of IF but WHEN.

I cannot see how that is possible when the iframes are hosted on my own server. I'm sure FB knew there was going to be a whole new world of possibilities for developers when they opened the door with iframes. The only thing we cannot do is automatically execute a media file without the user's interaction. IFrames simply read a web file hosted off their servers as does a mobile application.

Yes, I know the pages are hosted on our servers but they can very easily block things like popups from the code, it's not hard. And they will.

I personally find pop-ups really annoying. I have never opt-in anything with a pop up before. I'm not sure how well this will convert with facebook users, but its best to do a split test and see.

      Agree re split testing.

Never? Quite clearly you must have not come across anything of "value" then. :p:p:p

I agree. popups exist for a reason and if they wouldn't work, people would stop creating and using them.

I do hope FaceBook will make sure to block pop ups. We don't want FB members to have one more reason to hate marketers.

These pop ups are only applicable to facebook business pages. They cannot be used on personal pages.

Any experienced IM can tell you that you only have 10-20 seconds to capture your visitors attention. Pop ups that are properly placed are a strong advertising tool.

Facebook allows ads to be plastered all over your personal and business page so what is the difference? I learned to live with the advertising as Facebook is FREE.

My pop up use is non intrusive and it actually looks like I've just messaged you making it personal.

I just got a free pop up, went to upload it to Wordpress without unzipping and checking to find I should have opened unzipped and given the popup a title. Also with I-frames you need to have the right sized blog which has slowed me down, so you say once the size is done the Blog is configured with an I-Frame widget for Facebook the pop up is good, or do you add the pop up after the blog I-Frame has been approved? I just hoping I can squeeze in a video alongside the autoresponder with this free Pop Up. That would make it a triple i-frame. Now would this be better or safer security to have the blog on a https: rather than http like the wordpress.com now provides in settings?

I just noticed your pop up, its pops down below at the side, very clever I hardly noticed it and for a minute thought I was logged into Skype a cool ping sound with chat box, very clever well done Maurice.

    Hi Maurice

I liked your example - especially how it was personalised to say 'How's the weather in London?'.

It will be up to marketers to use pop ups responsibly - if you annoy people they won't become customers. But if you offer great value, well that's a different story.

Whilst some people personally do not like pop-ups they are proven to increase conversion.

A really exciting use of pop ups will be to have a Facebook Connect button appear on your fanpage - 1 click to build your list!

There are some good WSO's on this at the moment.

(By the way the weather is fantastic here this Easter)

By the way Maurice your guide on mobile marketing looks interesting - I liked your interview wit Sam the other day.

However it's it expensive at $79 and not very clear what you get for your money.

How would you make it work in UK? Know any good service providers?

Also how about releasing it as a WSO - you'll probably sell 10x as many copies.

I say try it and see what results you get. No sense living your life in fear about what might possibly happen someday in the future on Facebook. If they take it down, they take it down. Boo hoo.

Still doesn't answer my question of whether it can be changed to look like the pop up ad I have in the attachment above if i use this software

To answer your question, no it cannot be changed ...If you can write code and would like to experiment with it, that is OK with me. It's always interesting to see what people can do. The reason why Facebook will never stop it is because iframe pages are not hosted on facebook, they are hosted on your server.

I put it up on this Facebook page so you can see it on an actual iFrame. It stays on the bottom so it is not so intrusive but it can be powerful and it looks like you just instantly messaged them from Facebook

I think it's good and bad really. Facebook people are usually anti-marketing and may react negatively to it.

I think I need to reiterate...These are only on Business pages. People who go there expect to see something for sale. My pop up does not show up like others do. It stays on the bottom of the page just like the Ultimate Footer Ad. They are not intrusive and if I had not told you it was a pop up, you would not have know it was and thought it was part of the page. This way I can greet each individual visitor with a custom greeting. For example if you came to my page at Virtual Open House - Real Estate - Hailey, ID | Facebook you would be greeted with something like..How's the weather in Tennessee or similar.

Please check out the page before you judge it...If you think it looks like a pop up after you've seen it, then come back and tell us.

do you have the ability to show it only on the fan gate? such as if the person being showed the pop-up is a fan or non-fan? For instance does it pop up every time someone visits your fan page or tries to leave it? That can get annoying if your just trying to visit and engage and get that darn pop up everytime. lol

It only shows up on the one page and unless I had told you it was a pop up, you would not notice it as such, you would have thought it was like the UFA. It does not pop up. On Facebook it only appears on the bottom of the page but I can code it to greet each visitor and they don't realize it. Once you are a fan of the page, whenever you visit the page after that, you go to the wall anyway. check it out and you'll see. It's really more of a footer pop up than anything... I have a web-stat program that monitors visitors to my Facebook page that tells me the visitors city, country, ip address and a whole bunch of other details and what I've noticed is that most of the warriors who have commented negatively have not even looked at the page to see what I'm talking about. Those that do see it are usually impressed with it's simplicity and how it sits like a footer addition on Facebook. (This happened by accident by the way) Facebook cannot stop pop ups so instead, they limit any pop up type script codes to the bottom of the current page.

On a regular website, the pop up appears like any pop up would. The easiest way to see it is to go to this page here: Chat Pop Box

On that page it will appear as a regular pop up, not like on Facebook where it pops up as a footer addition.

Has anyone heard of Facebook weighing in on fan page popups yet? I can't imagine them liking the idea (although I do, as a marketer). But I can see them allowing it. Their main goal is to aggregate the activity of their members, so they have a strong incentive to allow businesses to market themselves in the way they see fit.

Virtually every consumer site uses popups in one way or another.

So it doesn't matter if Facebook likes popups, just will they allow them.

My guess is "yes" though I haven't even read their terms of service to see if this is covered.

I know there is a way to do this. There's a software out there that allows this and I just can't find it... I came across it a few weeks ago, and if you're advertising for your facebook like page, you can create a huge list using this strategy. When you're getting likes, try creating a campaign with words that seem like an ad, so that when people to go like it, the expect to learn something and then it'll be more likely that they put in their name and e-mail
