Affiliate marketing - advice?

Hi all,

As I put in my introduction I am a UK businessman...I own and run several internet businesses and am involved with GetResponse (in my sig).

However I have never actually done any affiliate marketing myself.

I have always come across pages saying: EARN $400,000 IN 30 days!!!

But I have always sad: That's a scam, and I click off the page.

So some questions for all you affiliate marketing guru's:

How much money do you make through affiliate marketing each year? (which has gone in to your bank account)
How much do you spend on marketing?
How have you done it? Hard work or pumping in a lot of money?

For someone like myself, do you think it's worth getting in to affiliate marketing? How long would it take to become successful? Where is the best place to start? What companies pay the highest commissions?

Regards,
BusinessMasterUK

So far nothing, but I put that entirely down to the fact that I have put in zero effort.

I have signed up for affiliate programs in the past, but have never done much to promote those products or programs. Always full of good intentions!!

Of course if you don't have traffic coming to your site, then no-one will ever see your affiliate links ... and that has been my problem in the past. I am now concentrating on creating my own products and building the infrastructure that I need to launch them and to drive traffic to my niche sites / blog etc. I believe that once that is in place (very soon), I will be able to promote relevant targeted affiliate links in addition to my own information and products. I would hope that this will add a small additional revenue to each website and that the cumulative effect will be a reasonable contribution for my efforts.

I'm not expecting affiliate revenue to blow me away, but to be a little bit of additional revenue that I would not have had if I hadn't promoted the links. I think it is important that each site should only include relevant affiliate links.

I imagine that to make big money at it, you need big lists and a good following and to promote, promote, promote to those lists. I don't see how you can build up a good enough list without having a great product of your own to start with.

I think this all makes sense, but without a proven track record, I'm no expert. But here's hoping!!

Glad to see you here. You're on the right track being here at WF. Affiliate marketing can be tough to learn at first to make a long term steady income, but it can pay off.

I think you have to get over the hype and think of it as a business. Use it as ONE of your lines of income, not as the main one.

Perhaps search the WSOs a bit and you'll find something you like.

Affiliate marketing has been hyped as this easy way of getting started online. In one sense this is true, because you don't need to have your own product, and you don't even need to have your own list if you don't want to, however, the fact that its barrier to entry is lower also means that more people are doing the same thing, which means that you need to be better, you need to put in more effort to succeed.

I cannot say how much I have made in affiliate marketing because I don't separate it out. I keep track of all my sales - affiliate, my own products, my coaching, etc. but don't differentiate (maybe I should:-)

But I have definitely made money from it - not millions but some. As far as how much I put into it, not much at all. I am promoting my affiliate products on my website (that was already set up), my blog, my newsletters (well I do pay for Aweber every month.) I also write articles, etc.

There are a lot of free ways you can promote your affiliate products.

I do have an affiliate marketing training course if you want to pm me, I can give you the link to where you can see the details. (I hope that's ok to say)

Do you have a site that you want to drive the traffic to to make the sale, or just have people click a link and go straight to the product? There are a million different ways to promote it. You can use Twitter if you have a decent following, or you can go to Fiverr and have people tweet your links for you cheap.

If you want to get people to click your link on your site then you have to get traffic to your site and the ad has to be relevant to your site. If you are in the weight loss niche you don't want to have affiliate offers for pet products... etc.

Where you start depends on what you have to work with. If you don't have a great strategy then you will not be successful. And yes, the opportunity is there, but as with everything else the results are not what the vast majority of people are making. You have to put in the time and there is great info here on this forum about how to do it.
