Stretch Your Mind...And Create Something Unique

This post is directed to the product creators out there, or for that matter
anybody who creates anything such as graphics, salescopy, software or
whatever.

I took the day off from work today. From 10 AM to 4 PM (just 15 minutes
ago) I spent the day in my recording studio. I had decided that I was going
to write, lay down tracks, and burn to CD a song in an 8 hour day. Turns out
I only needed 6 hours. No wonder I can crank out articles so fast.

Anyway, I had no idea what I wanted to write, so I went to my trusty
friend random.org.

I picked a random number between 1 and 6. Came out 5.

I then picked a random letter string of 5 characters.

The string came out RDMHM

It took me about 60 seconds to come up with the title for my song.

Really Dig My Hoochie Mama.

I then came up with a chord progression for the verse

F# - G# - B

I then came up with a chord progression for the chorus

A - B - F#

I then came up with a chord progression for the bridge

Bm - F# - Bm - G# - C#

I then came up with the lyrics. Don't worry, I'm not going to print them
here.

I then laid down the following tracks

2 rhythm guitar tracks
1 lead guitar track
1 drum track
1 lead vocals track
2 4-part backing vocals tracks (using a vocal synthesizer)
1 background strings track
1 lead strings track
2 motion synth tracks
1 percussive synth track

I mixed all the parts and burned it to my latest CD which now has 10 songs.

All from RDMHM

Now, let's take that same string of letters and see what we can do with
it in regard to product creation.

Well, I haven't really given it much thought and the H is giving me some
problems but I came up with stuff like...

Rapid Dynamic Monetization (something) Matrix (or Method)

Now if the H screws things up, get rid of it. You've got a basis for a
product. I like the RDM part, though it could be improved probably.

Anyway, say you decide on Rapid Dynamic Monetization Method. You leave
out the H.

You basically have your hook for the product, rapid and dynamic.

All that's left is to come up with some methods for the product (looks like
an ebook to me) that are rapid and dynamic.

Point is, by doing stupid exercises like these (I've been writing songs like
this for years) you stretch your mind because you're not limiting yourself
to what you would come up with from just normal thought. There is no way
in heck I would have ever come up with "Really Dig My Hoochie Mama".

Sounds corny? Hey, you'll be surprised what you can come up with when
you use alternate thought processes.

I've done this for:

Articles
Songs
Products

Even Adwords campaigns.

Give it a shot. You have nothing to lose but might have quite a bit to gain.

My songwriting partner used to get inspiration for songs from everyday phrases.

Unfortunately, he usually chose the wrong ones.

We're still waiting for "My Brussel Sprouts Are Boiling Over" to get picked up by the radio stations.

In terms of writing generally, though, I find Yahoo's Oddly Enough section

Oddly Enough News Headlines - Yahoo! News UK

gives me lots of ideas for topics and anecdotal examples.

Reminds me of the old Chicago song, "25 or 6 to 4". They guy named it that because that's what time it was when he looked at the clock.

    Hey Steven,

I used to produce music myself in a big way and I could come up with creative new tracks all the time without fail. I know exactly where you are coming from and music to me is still the most creative talent I think I have.

I just wish I had more time to pick it back up again!

But I have never really thought about trying to channel that creativity into my internet marketing campaigns, maybe I should try!
