Question for the SEO Experts

Stumbled onto a keyword that would be a perfect branding option for an affiliate sales project in a very broad niche:

246,000 Global Monthly Searches
165,000 Local Monthly Searches in the US

32,300,000 Search Results/no quotes
2,280,000 Search Results/with quotes

Now, here's the kicker...

The top two results in the quoted search term show 216 & 122 backlinks respectively. (The third link is a major company with tons of backlinks, so I'm not including it.)

Without quotes, the top three results show 216, 23 & 56 backlinks respectively.

Do I need to be talked down, or did I stumble onto a potential goldmine?

First of all, are those search volumes you posted exact match or broad match? What is the amount of exact match searches?

Also, the number of links is not the only thing you need to consider here. You have to look at a lot more than just that. What is their onpage SEO like? What are the quality of all those backlinks? How long have those top sites been online for? How much content do those top sites have? On and on it goes.

The fact that you said the 3rd listing is a big company with a ton of backlinks just answered your question. For those other two sites to be beating that site then they must be doing something right and have a lot of relevant and authoritative links pointing at them. Link quality is a lot more important than the number of links.

If you are going for a top 5 listing then it sounds like you would have a fair bit of work on your hands.

      Ahh, the 'exact match'.
And to see how that turned out (badly), I knew I must have been missing something.
Eh, it was nice to dream for a couple of minutes.

      Thanks for the help.

HA! 22 Globally, less than zero Locally. What a letdown.

Back to the old drawing board, as it were.

Also, you can use the following to get a better view of your competition:

allintitle:"keyword phrase here" This will tell you how many are actually targeting the keyword phrase on the website. and

allinanchor:"keyword phrase here" This will tell you how many sites are using the anchor text.

tip: Go to the end of the results displayed. Google will give an artificial number on the first few pages. A more accurate number will be displayed at the end of the results.

The exact match dream killer strikes again! Keep going, it is great when you find that niche... and the exact match results are what you are looking at now. No, I am not giving any niche info away, sorry.

Next time you are sizing up competition on page 1, take a look at the page rank for top pages. A lot of people forget this. If it is like a 6-9, you probably have no chance getting the top spot. Just my two cents

      best of luck,
