    The two are ENTIRELY different!

Paypal STANDARD is PAYPAL, works like paypal, and has no cost if you do nothing.

Paypal EXPRESS is essentially paypal PRO, looks similar to paypal standard, but uses a merchant account, and has an ongoing cost, even if you do nothing.

If you don't want to pay the money, if your credit is bad, or you don't have a program to handle paypal express, paypal standard is your best bet.

I have a premier business account and I just use website payments standard usually to process paypal payments and everything works like a champ for me.

Of course there are many variables to consider for your particular purposes. For example, from what I've researched and heard express is best if you anticipate your potential customers either having paypal accounts or signing up for one on checkout.

With standard, your customer has the option to either use their paypal account (if they have one) or simply just pay with a credit card if they choose.
To nutshell it, STANDARD allows users the choice of signing in or not signing in, they can either use their paypal account or use a credit card PayPal Express Checkout can be more efficient if your customers are typically PayPal only users.

Like I said, I just use standard and it's always done great for me. If you want to keep it simple, go with standard for sure.

    Hope that helps ya some,

I haven't tried this myself, but recently noticed "Paypal for Digital Goods". (my acct type is "Business", so not sure whether this service is available for other acct types) Where to find this:

My Account > Overview > My Business Setup > PayPal Business Products > PayPal for Digital Goods (Express Checkout)

PayPal for Digital Goods (Express Checkout) is a streamlined checkout experience with a specially designed pricing model.

If you sell music, games, virtual goods, enews, ebooks, video, downloadable software or other digital content, there's an Express Checkout solution designed just for you.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

I really want to thank all three of you for your very concise and detailed info you
gave me. I sure appreciate your help.

I'm still confused. The plug in I'm using has the following choices:
    Paypal Express Checkout
    Paypal Payments Pro
    Paypal Payments Standard
    Paypal Payments 2.0

I have a premier account which can be used for ebay selling etc. Do you know what
the paypal payments 2.0 would be?

I probably won't sell alot at first, so I'm just trying to get the cheapest option of course.

Express and Pro are ONLY for paypal pro. The difference is that paypal pro looks and works like a merchant account gateway, so it isn't paypal compatible in the traditional sense. You can't use your paypal account. That is actually a GOOD thing! If you could use a paypal account, people could intercept it UNLESS paypal maintained control, which would be convoluted, etc... SO, paypal pro is clean, but DOESN'T support paypal accounts, and express supports paypal accounts, but is convoluted. Paypal express looks like, works similar to, and IS fully paypal compatible, but goes through the same gateway paypal pro does. It is NOT paypal premier.

Paypal payments standard would be classic paypal, and WOULD be paypal premier. The premier part is basically terms, and not capabilities or function.

Apparently, paypal 2.0 is a mobile method.

So it looks like YOUR choice should be paypal standard. Don't worry, it doesn't know, OR care what type of classic paypal account you have. They all work the SAME!

      PAYPAL PRO:

Look at the paypro part and it becomes more clear.

BTW paypal standard IS the cheapest option, if you are starting out. If you try pro or express, you will be MORE confused by weird questions, and it can't work anyway unless you have an account that they WILL charge you for. THEY are better ONLY because you have more control, and the costs per transaction can be lower.
