Can You Please Help Me... I cannot access my websites

Hello warriors,
The problem happened last night. I cannot access all my websites and webhosting cpanel. I already talked to my webhosting provider but he can access all my websites and even gave me screenshots. He asked me to access his own website which is also hosted on his hosting services but I cannot access it too. It seems that I am the only one who cannot access anything within our server/hosting service. I checked with other people and they can access my sites and other sites hosted by my webhosting provider.
It seems that my websites are accessible outside my network but I cannot access them here. I can access any website here but not my own domain. I do not know what the problem is. I tried using universal dns 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 and I still cannot fix the problem. I tried IE, firefox, chrome and netscape browser but still cannot access my websites. If my ISP is the problem then why I can access all websites except my own domain?

I need help. Thank you very much in advance

use pagewash to load up your website, if it loads fine there, the problem is your IP.

Yes, the problem is with your IP. Either the webhost have blacklisted your IP or your IP provider have block your site's ip, therefore not able to load.

When I first started in IM.

I had trouble logging into my cpanel account. So I sent a ticket to them and over and over again I got new passwords. They still didnt work.

So finally a admin guy from the company emailed me and told me to make sure that the date and time on my computer were up to date. quite frankly, the time on my laptop was 6 hours off. I changed it then I was able to log into my cpanel account and everything was fine after that

I had a similar problem several years ago - it was a hidden cache file in my computer. No idea how it got there but it was denying access to my hosting ip. It took me a couple hours to track down the problem - but then all I had to do was delete that little file and all was fine.

I wish I could remember where I finaly found that little file - maybe someone here will know. I'm thinking it was "hosts file" but not sure that makes sense.

Where's a geek when you need one?

I asked my niece to use the PC in the internet cafe near here where the Internet Service Provider is the same as mine and my websites are no loading there too. So my ISP provider blocked my webhosting IP? I wonder why? This is shocking

Being able to access the other websites makes it all the more definite. You see, they don't route their computers off trough another network, or use evdo, or whatever. It would be expensive, dumb, and a security risk. So if your site/system is up then they probably WILL be able to access your site. They really SHOULD have access to a computer coming in from another network though, to test such things. The problem is that you DO have to go through other networks. If any have a break, you won't be able to access the site.

Of course, If you can access amazon, google, etc... then YOUR connection is probably good, which means the problem likely IS with the host.

Some webhosts are real *****IDIOTS*****! I have seen, SEVERAL TIMES, where they use THEIR computers on THEIR networks to access your systems, and claim your systems are FINE! Try from another system, on another network. Go to the library if you have to! If it doesn't work THERE, they are likely WRONG. Call them up and tell them you tried it on different networks with different computers and all could access a big site, like amazon, but NOT yours!

BTW cpanel is a special case. More and more ISPs are deciding to DISABLE ports. Of course, they CAN'T disable 443, or 80, because everyone would be SCREAMING. But they MAY disable the cpanel ports. Just to let you know. That DOESN'T explain why you can't access your websites though. Someone probably kicked a cable or something.

Thanks for the reply and thanks for explaining about the cpanel. At first I thought it was the webhosting but in fairness to my webhosting provider, the owner of the hosting service is very kind and supportive and helping me trace the problem, so I guess I have a good support. We've asked a lot of people to access our websites and they are accessible outside my network. So finally I asked my niece to rent a PC in a netcafe with the same ISP as mine and found out that our websites are not accessible there..so I guess my net provider has a problem with my webhost IP. I do not know why or if this is temporary and be back in 2-3 days.

I take it you understand the concept behind ISP caching and routing paths?

It's entirely possible for a site to appear down through your ISP and your mate up the road to experience the site without any problems through theirs.

This is most commonly the case with DNS changes.

It is a weird issue, have you tried clearing your cookies and temporary files from the whole computer, there is a way to restart the modem that way you refresh your IP, try that as well, definitely if other people can access it but you it is because of some IP major issue with your network alone, hope my info helps you

Maybe your IP address was banned by the servers? This happened to me once and once I contacted my providers they unbanned my IP address. Up till now I can't figure out waht I did except checking my websites, etc. regularly.

From everything you have already tried, I think your host needs to see if your IP address has been banned. Just like AgentP said. I think it's highly likely. I know it's frustrating, but so long as the rest of the world can see your sites, it's better this way than the other. I hope you get it resolved.

@THK Yes I am planning to call my Internet Service Provider. I just want to make sure that it is not a webhosting problem.

@Michele My webhosting provider already checked and said that our IPs are not banned and there is no violation recorded. They think it's a gateway problem or something on my ISP..

Here is my tracert..if anyone can shed light on this ..thank you... I will also contact my provider.

Any situation like this try this before picking up the phone. From a command prompt (You need to Right Click and Run as Administrator in Vista or 7) Assuming your running Windows of course.

          ipconfig /flushdns
          nbtstat -RR
          nbtstat -R
          arp -d
This flushes all the major caches on your PC. Try again I bet 9 times out of 10 that will solve the problem.

Raquel - if you want to send me your WHM login I'll take a look at the server config and see if anything jumps out at me. I will bet you that your IP has been blocked by the firewall despite what your hosting company is telling you.

There IS one other possibility I hadn't thought of. If the servers were moved, or you changed DNS SERVER settings, maybe THEY are wrong! Try pinging the server to see if the IP is the correct one. If THAT happened, all you can do is WAIT! Since the hosting provider runs the DNS, THEIRS would be fine. Since you check your server frequently, you have a worst case scenario there. It will take the longest for you. Of course, trying it at the cafe shows it is still out for OTHERS.

STILL, if THEY moved the server, they should have told you first. If you changed the DNS, that should have been one of the first things you would suspect.

The first thing I did when there was a problem was ping the site and then ran a tracert - that's how I narrowed it down a bit.

The date/time seems simple - but I had that happen several times when my system went off due to power failure here. It reverted to the year I got the computer and before I noticed what happened I was in a panic as I kept getting error messages.

My webhosting service told me that no recent updates, changes or maintenance were made. Yes I tried in the cafe but all my websites and any website hosted by my webhosting service are also NOT accessible in the net cafe with the same Internet Service Provider as mine. So I suspect that my ISP blocked my webhosting IP. I called them last night and they told me they do not see any IPs blocked and no reports of specific websites blocked. Escalated my problem to tech people in charge of DNS, gateway etc issues and asked me to wait and monitor for 24 hours

My webhosting said, if our/their IPs were blocked by a net provider, they should receive notice, reports but they received none and ISP cannot block any webhosting IPs just like that.

I have to go with Kay on this one. Until you have some solid information on what's going on you're just guessing.

        Click on Start>run>cmd>hit enter
Type in ping www."thenameofyoursite".com and hit enter
It should resolve it to an ip address and then give you the results of the 4 packets sent.
If it can't resolve the hostname to an ip address then you have a DNS issue with your ISP
If it is able to resolve the name to an ip address but the pings fail then there is another problem.

In this case run a traceroute

        Again, start>run>cmd>hit enter
type in tracert "whatever the ip address was of your host" and hit enter
It will trace the route that the packet takes over 30 "hops" and tell you where the packets are being dropped.
It could be with your ISP, with the web host or somewhere in the middle

        Hope this helps...

thanks Marvin. I tried accessing 68.71.135.170 on the 1st day that I encountered the problem but I saw the same error in firefox when accessing Asthmadiet.info "The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."

Your post gave me error messages I was not able to see here. I asked a friend online in YM to access the IP and yes he saw the same things:

-If you feel you have reached this page in error, please contact the web site owner:
-It may be possible to restore access to this site by following these instructions for clearing your dns cache.
-If you are the web site owner, it is possible you have reached this page because:
              -The IP address has changed
-There has been a server misconfiguration.
-The site may have been moved to a different server
-If you are the owner of this website and were not expecting to see this page, please contact your hosting provider.

Marvin. I will send these infos and messages to hosting provider, hope things will become clearer.

My host provider owner (which is very supportive and kind). Already talked to me about this. He said it is natural that these error messages will appear because I am in shared IP

A couple more thoughts since it looks like the obvious possibilities are rapidly being killed off:

Your .htaccess (assuming you are not on a windows server) has your IP blocked?

Can you ftp into your site? I'm guessing not, but probably worthwhile checking.

If this is a WP site, are you using any unauthorized access plugins?

I tried accessing Ftp yesterday and I can't connect to the server. Some of my websites are WP and some are not. I use the same plugins on all my WP sites like SEO pack, Statcounter, WP Privacy Policy, WP Site Map, Log-in lock down, askapache password protect. I haven't downloaded any new plug-ins or created a new WP lately or before the problem happened.

  • More than likely your ip address is blocked either at their hardware firewall or your whm (cpanel) software firewall. If you have a dynamic ip address (ie. it changes each time you unplug your modem). Try shutting off your modem and router for 3 minutes and rebooting and see if you can view your site.

If that is the case, then you can email your hosting provider to make him aware of the situation.

Thanks....I already shutdown, reset, unplug my modem/router many times yesterday. I was talking to my webhost provider many times yesterday and he taught me how to flush the dns, tracert etc...

I'll try to reset/ unplug my router/modem again now...again thank you

Ask your host tech or ISP tech (you'll need more than the basic low level tech) how to find hidden host files in windows.

I've looked through my notes but didn't write the file location when I had a problem but this sounds so much like the same error.

        SEARCH google for

find hidden host file in windows

Lots of tech results there - look for one for your version of windows.

Sounds like a permissions file has been created or altered - it might show in a system search for files changed during the time period but don't know if hidden files will show in a search.

Thanks to all who are checking and sharing possible solutions and please stay with me as I want to resolve this problem.

About the asthmadiet site if you can see it. Do not mind the design or whatever it was my first website and domain when I started IM and no updates were made on the site and no money, just one or two sales years ago and a few adsense clicks. I just keep the domain because it is the domain host used on my webhosting service.

Raquel, a quick google search showed up what I *think* Kay was talking about with respect to the Windows hidden host files:

How to Change and Replace Hidden Hosts File in Windows 7 | Windows 7 Themes

What version of windows are you using? The host file appears to be only used in Windows 7.

[Edit] Nope, the hosts files are in my XP version as well in the .../etc/ subdirectory.

    This is good to know.

how to fix corrupted etc\hosts file - Microsoft Answers

      Found this for windows7

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select run as administrator | type the following -

      Code:

      cd %windir%system32driversetc

      dir /a /s

Do you see the HOSTS file?

EDIT: If I'm remembering correctly the hostfile may be in the drivers area. As I understand it, this file gives your system permission to connect to ips -though I may be oversimplifying it.

The same method using the START command should work for Vista - as long as you are logged in as administrator.

          More on Vista for this

Administrator Can't Edit Hosts File - Vista Forums

Just add "vista" to the "find hidden host file in windows" phrase in a search and there's more info - but the above should cover it. In Vista, seems those hidden files are perhaps too well protected.

              Hi Raquel,

I must have been sleeping with my reply about checking your computer ... I totally forgot about your niece having been unable to access your site from a different computer but still trying to access through your internet provider.

At this point, I really don't think it is your problem, but rather something going on with your host or their access routing to the internet.

I'm surprised your host wasn't able to resolve the problem with the ISP he is using. Probably time to get this off your back and push on him a bit to get this resolved. In thinking about it, this just does not sound like your problem!

good to know about the time thing. very interesting. BTW, I always dislike when ppl play "blame the host". As a support tech, I know the majority of times it's usually Not the host (of course , always there are individual circumstances/etc.). A GREAT tool to use is host-tracker.com. it resolves your site from 60+ geographic regions world-wide and gives a great overview of where you're up or down. worth to check when troubleshooting site-outages.

From the link that Kay gave FOR xp:

"A hosts file is not required for your browser to function. If you suspect an issue with the hosts file you can rename the hosts file and test your browsing without it."

It totally slipped my mind, but that link also mentioned 3rd party software that could also be preventing you from accessing a given IP address thus "protecting" you from yourself. If you have a security software suite installed, you might check the settings.

Yes I told my host provider like you suggested in your earlier post to see if my IP is blocked by the firewall and he checked it and nothing is blocked in the firewall. I gave him my IP address and he already emailed it to their backbone provider to have it checked.

Thank you very much for suggesting possible solutions, really appreciate it.

They're either lying to you on purpose or because they are too stupid to know how to check a firewall configuration.

My host provider said I am on a shared IP.

I personally know the owner of the hosting service and he is helping me to resolve the problem and we've been talking until last night. He is also communicating with their backbone provider.

Though at this time I am not yet sure if it is the hosting or my ISP. With regards to my ISP, I am still trying to follow up with them.

    Some troubleshooting you can do...

1- Go to ipchicken.com and get your own IP address, check your IP config and match, call your ISP and ask them to get your current assigned IP address.

2- Go to kroxy.net and try to access your website. If it still doesn't show, it's your server's IP. If you're on a shared host without a dedicated IP, there could be someone else on your server who's screwing up something.

3- Make sure your nameservers are what they should be.

4- You mentioned you had a router, hard wire in instead. If it works hardwired, your router needs some configuration and you should contact your router manufacturer for assistance.

5- Try to FTP in using only your IP instead of ftp.yourdomain.info.

6- Ask your host to empty your cache on your server.

Hope this helps and good luck, I share your frustrations, all mys sites are down because my server's RAID card went on it, 28 hours offline Sometimes, things happen that are beyond your control, your site is still there, it's unfortunate you can't even view your own site.

Thank you for your reply and for providing possible solutions.

I already did your suggestions except #5 but the problem is still here. I eliminated the possibility that the problem is on my laptop settings or on my router because my websites are also NOT accessible in a net cafe/other computers using the same Internet Service Provider as mine. Maybe its either my hosting provider is blocking my ISP or my ISP is blocking my hosting provider?

How to do this? #5- Try to FTP in using only your IP instead of ftp.yourdomain.info.
All I did was connect through Filezilla and I cannot connect to the server.

My sites are accessible at kroxy.net

  • Okay, I'm not a techie by any means, but the fact that all 4 packets were lost shows some sort of problem on your end...

    Ping statistics for 68.71.135.170:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)
I pinged from my computer and all 4 were received just fine. Your site is also loading fine for me.

It's either your ISP blocking your site or your host, or something in your computer doing it.

        Raquel:
This is my first post at WF and the first day I created my account so you should probably be skeptical of my advice. Public service announcement aside, we've faced some similar challenges. If this is already fixed, I'm definitely interested in how it this issue was resolved.

I'm drawing conclusions based on what you've said already. Correct me if any of these are off base.
        1. First, when you ping, you get an IP. This means that your webhosting service is not blocking DNS requests from your ISP or range of public IPs (even though there is no response). This is not common, but has been an issue for us more than once.
        2. Second, when you try to ping or tracert, it is a problem that you don't get a response since these are not blocked (and people on other ISP's can get responses using these functions). We do block pings and tracerts in some cases.
        3. Third, you are pm a shared IP. Since your pings are being rejected by IP, there isn't any reason to try accessing the webpages of any of your "IP neighbors" (such as pregnancyclue.com). This is why I would agree with others that the issue is caused by a block from your webhost or your ISP as opposed to the anything that you actually configured on your webpage.

Unfortunately, because of where the problem is and because your host has multiple websites that share a single public IP, I don't know any way of adding a record to the hosts file that will actually succeed in allowing you to access your website. The only option would be to get an aircard from a cell provider and return it in under a month.

Your last post was that your hosting provider was working with your ISP to find an issue. Since there weren't posts afterwards, I'm guessing they figured this out. Can you let me know what details they gave you? We were fighting a similar issue (not exactly the same), but ended up getting it fixed. The only thing we did was have our webhost unblock a few IP's that had been blocked based on their rules to automatically block IP's that appeared to be launching denial of service attack. We also changed the subnet on the router of a the two users from the ISP needing to access the host (since very few users had logins for the website). I don't know that either (especially the second step) did anything to fix the issue, but it had been going on for a couple of days and immediately was resolved after doing these two things.

        Let me know.
        Thanks

I had a similar problem with a domain that I purchased from NameCheap. Transferred the DNS settings over to Hostgator but kept getting this error...

          The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

I spent hours looking for answers and trying all kinds of high tech solutions that I found in forums and on various websites. If I just would have unplugged the stupid modem I could have saved some serious work time. Well, live and learn
