Is Craiglist is really useful?

Hi Guys,

I have heard a lot about Craiglist posters. Do you think that Craiglist posters are really worthy to market your product or service?

Welcome your thoughts!!!

I think yes because millions of people visit in that site everyday. So if you are a businessman, you have to utilize Craigslist.

My websites haven't gotten much attention through craigslist, but they have from other sites.

    That's just MY experience.

I have found that other people will often post links to my websites on craigslist. It will bring good traffic but I have never tried myself.

I never had any success using them. Maybe I was doing something wrong and maybe not.

Not too sure. Haven't been there in a while after posting a few ads and not seeing any results.

I have had some success with craigslist in the past.
The other classifieds i used was backpage and Kijiji.
Those have been the top 3 i received the most responses from.

I get a good deal of traffic from craigslist so I use it almost religiously. My products are pretty subjective though; some people like them, others don't but I keep the ads fresh because it's free advertising.

Craigslist is a goer mainly because there are millions of buyers hungry to find the product they are looking for and also its free advertising.

The number one key is to have catchy advertising phrases.

    Yes, craigslist is useful.

Heck - I post only one ad each day, and I usually get 4-5 new leads from it. Not a bad return for taking a minute a day to post.

Thanks a lot guys for sharing your beautiful experiences

BTW can you tell me what kind of posts you had to get the leads? Also, where should I post my craiglist banners? Is there any list of sites available?

Besides being a good (and free) way to advertise, You can also pick up work by checking the "Gigs" section. I just started my business and got my very first customer by making just one phone call in reply to a business owner needing someone to "improve his search results and create a Facebook fan page for his Mortgage Business.

CriagsList used to be a good place...but now it has fallen in favor like MySpace and so many other sites. No sense in beating a dead horse there.

You know a web site has fallen into disrepute when they start making movies like "The CraigsList Killer" about people who go there to find victims to murder. Seems like that says it all.

Some people will continue to think CraigsList is the cool place to do business. They will be there until Craig shuts off the lights.

I don't think I'd go that far. We sell more through CL than eBay, Bonanza, Etsy and Zazzle all put together - and it's free. We wouldn't be selling if people weren't still there looking to buy stuff so I highly doubt that any movie has made a difference.

Again, depends on your niche, what you're selling, what you hope to accomplish and how many people are looking for your stuff. I still get a good deal of traffic from the site.

Craigslist has always been sort of a hit and miss for me.
Sometimes the response is very good, and other times, not one response.
I think it is all about finding the right words.
It is a free place to place ads, and with the economy like it is now, I think free pretty much fits anyone's budget these days

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

Couldn't tell you. I didn't use any ebook. I just put the ads up with html and banners. If you vary the ads and titles, you can list in multiple cities/states. Then you just go back and visit your ads once in a while and repost them if they've expired.

I keep 14 ads running all the time on CL in various parts of the country and just like with any other advertising campaign, I keep them running.

I did check my site stats to see where geographically most of my traffic was coming from and made sure to put an ad or two in that location on CL.

But I can't recommend any type of training or ebooks about selling on CL because I never used one. I just put my ads on there like I have them on eBay's free classifieds and I keep renewing the ads.

Just because you can't work CL doesn't mean its a dead horse. I'm well connected to some of the "BIG FISH" of bulk CL posting and their mid 4 figure days beg to differ Anyways CL is dead, move along people! More leads for those that know how to drive traffic

I never could figure out the bulk posting thing but I'm not sure if it would be very beneficial for my niche anyway. I mean, not "everybody" needs favors, you know? ROFLMAO!!

It might help with my husband's two sites though. Is it expensive to implement?

          Short answer: Yes.

Bulk posting on CL is very expensive now, nothing like how it was a few years ago when all you needed was fresh IPs and an email address.

I'm sure it still works for certain things, like listing Real Estate for sale, posting and finding jobs, etc. I know plenty of people who go there if they're looking for an apartment/roomates, or a job. Craigslist was never meant to be a venue for "internet marketers" though. It was for people to buy/sell/find stuff in their local community. As far as affiliate marketing, I know they've cracked down on it, but I'm sure there are people who've found ways to get around it.

I've gotten lots of orders for custom shirts from ads I put on CL. They have all been local and it is a physical product, not a download or service. Like any other place you advertise it all depends on the offer and catching people when they need it.

That says it all!! We had a few physical products listed on eBay that never sold but then we listed them on CL and they sold in a couple of days.

We also had a couple of high ticket HEAVY items that we wouldn't ship and they too were sold quickly on CL.

Here's a list of popular things that are sold everyday on craigslist
    • concert tickets
    • cd-dvd
    • digital camera
    • cars
    • auto-parts
    • furniture
    • collectible items
    • flats
    • e-books
    • computer
    • cell phone

If it's not one of these items, then I don't think it's going to be that much of a success.

CL does work for some categories liek nothing else ever will...

For eg... if you want to sell your car....get ready... you will receiving calls and txts and emails months after the ad and the car is long gone....

Ask me how I know that.....

But for some other categories...... I am begining to ask the same question..... i know the quality of traffic that you get from CL is [lets just say] very different...

Try it out... what have you gotto lose...

Danielle, I think a lot depends on what you're selling though. There are certain products that just wouldn't sell well on Craigslist, no matter what you do. I suspect that some people have tried selling MMO (make money online) type digital products on Craigslist, and that is almost certainly going to turn out to be a futile venture.

This is very, very true. I've noticed that CL has really cracked down on a lot of that lately. It used to be that as soon as I listed an ad, I got hammered with spam emails. That hasn't happened lately though, thank goodness.

I've also noticed a really big drop in repeat ads, but then that could just be in the two or three particular sections that I frequent for my searches. I couldn't say about the rest of the site though.

Well, it'd behoove Craigslist to weed out those types of ads. It just gives people a very poor impression of it, especially if they're hooked up to automated responses that use bait-and-switch type tactics.

Craigslist also has to counteract the email harvesters who just scrape all the email addresses there and then spam the heck out of them afterwards. From what you've described, they may have found a way to crack down on this as well - this is always a good thing!

I couldn't agree more, Danielle! I offer internet related services on Craigslist when I have some downtime from my present clients, and it brings me a decent amount of leads just posting approximately once a day.

Paul....I am in the exact same boat....however its a hit and miss with CL for me....

Haven;t been able to crack the code consistently... sO I just whipped out the phone and started calling.

I guess there are two approaches...
Either put a bait and wait for the fish to come and bite or...
You go where the fish are with a sphere.....

I am doing the latter while fine-tuning the first..

                As always.....
Positioning is more important than prospecting....

When you position yourself as an Trusted Authority... the quality of leads you get are quite different than when you are going after them and marketing yourself.

The best marketing is subtle under-the radar marketing...

                Hi Kelly,

Yes... and no I place brief ads that mention I'm a copywriter and invite businesses to go to my site.

You see, I actually post when I'm already brimming with work- and I mention that.

But I let them know that they can contact me and reserve a place in my schedule (if we determine we're a good match for the project.)

No ego talk here - I'm simply ensuring that even during slow periods with my regular clients, I'll always have fresh leads and new projects to work on.

If you offer a professional service or have a business, it's worth taking the time to make a nice, clear classified post and repost it once a day

Used it long ago, but stopped. Lately I've been using it to find stuff I'm interested in to buy. But I did run across a scammer, wanting to ship a car with ebay buyer protection. So be careful about the spamming, it doesn't go unnoticed.

It has been very effective for me but less than it was even a year ago. Just like anything else, when it becomes popular it gets flooded with crap and makes it harder to sift through. I still use it and will as long as it generates sales for me.

Yes, it does depend on what you're advertising. For instance, when someone sees my ads, unless they are getting married, having a baby, graduating, or need party favors for some event, etc., they're not going to even click on my ads. My ads are very targeted so if they click through to my site it means they're at least interested enough to see what I have.

Search by region, Craigslist is useful when searching a national combines many of the local search results and does not have. Sometimes you can not find what you're looking for in your state, but a search on the other side of the country does not make sense as well. If you discover a deal in a neighboring country, is now only a day trip away. This may be meaningless.

I advertise a vacation rental on Craigslist and get a fair response, However, as last year, I also get a number of scams. I have reported them, but no reply from Craigslist.

I have been using Craigslist for more than three years now and currently still use it with successful results. While some of you I see have had seemingly bad results I will share a few methods you can use to turn this potential negative into a positive.

I use Craigslist for multiple reasons:

First I use it as a testing ground for my ad copy. Without a decent ad copy your results on classifieds or even websites will be sub par. This site is an excellent place to practice proper ad copy and really set yourself apart from the rest of your competition posting classifieds. I like creating my own ad copy as it increases my personal skill set.

Practice your ad copy to become a bit more consistent in your results, as the old saying goes "Practice makes perfect".

Second I use it to keep traffic flowing to my websites, and opportunities. As LowKey mentioned it's a nice place to establish back links and depending on the site you are promoting can boost it's ranking slightly.

Third Those browsing on this site almost always have the intent to buy. So I use it as a source of sales as well, yes there will be a number window shoppers however good ad copy will decrease the odds of encountering them.

Fourth It's a great place to promote lesser programs, products, and services you have yet to devote your full attention. I am no doubt alone in this scenario when I say I have multiple forms of income. Some of these forms used to often be neglected while I worked on bigger projects. Classifieds are an excellent way to keep those lesser forms generating income.

So to answer your question son "Is Craigslist really useful?" Yes to those that approach it with the intent to improve their marketing tactics. No for those that are simply looking to make sales. I hope I shed some light on the situation for you.

Craigslist has been helpful to me as well. Just make sure whatever you're trying to advertise isn't too expensive.

Only been doing it a couple weeks posting 1 ad for each service: web design - SEO- mobile websites.

I post in two locations as I am on a border of 2 states.

I have only received a couple calls from the ads themselves but I have also sent 3 proposals to people I found in the 'gigs' section who replied to my initial email.

Have not landed a customer yet, but it has only been 2 weeks of posting. I do use 2 email/phone accounts though.

It depends from offer to offer. If your site is a 'blog' then obviously Craigslist is not going to work for you.

Craigslist is one of the most visited classified websites.
You should post in most populated cities on right time.
Just check that your ads doesn't ghost/flag then you will rock there.

You can have alot of leads there.
Most of the gurus use craigslist as their primary traffic source.
You just need to polish your ads so it can attract users.

Craigslist is still a great place to get traffic to your offers but it's not as easy as it used to be to be. Craigslist has seen a lot of abuse over the past few years with constant "gurus" teaching methods to game their system.

Of course like Google and Facebook they are keen to catch on to the new gimmicks and tricks so they don't last long.

In the end if you are sensible and don't attack the site as a place to make sales directly but rather as a pre-sell to get traffic back to your website then yes, Craigslist will still work for just about any physical or digital product. It's all in how you present it and generate curiosity. Coming off a spammy, boastful, or making wild too good to be true promises won't get you anywhere these days on Craigslist, in fact ads like that usually get flagged and ghosted in mere minutes now.

Learn to write decent trust garnering ads and you will see great results. Once you've achieved this just make it a routine to keep the ads active and you'll do fine.

    Hope this helps

CL is just great. You can't ignore it simply because of the ton of traffic it gets everyday. But, if you don't know what your doing, you'd get flagged and ghosted easily.

Is probably the most basic question asked when people first hear of the site. You can think of Craigslist as a mixture of the classified ads in a newspaper plus the editorial page combined with a job seeking website, and presented online for convenient access. Another definition of Craigslist is of an online community that has a comprehensive classified section. This includes sections for selling many different goods and services, employment listings, posting resumes or even personal ads. In addition, Craigslist offers a discussion forum covering many subjects - whether for sharing information or debating serious issues.

I know many people seems to claim they do very well with craigslist, but it has not worked for me. I could have changed a few things and keeped trying to use it, I am sure if I did it would have improved. But results were just too weak for me to keep trying.
