Warning: Facebook Buttons May Be Hazardous to Your Site's Health

Apparently there is a bug in the Facebook Like button code that can cause website problems.

The problems are apparently 1) too many page visits shown, and 2) creation of duplicate content on all search engines that find the link.

It is not a problem for me, so I'm not going to research further.

This article posted on AuctionBytes goes into a bit more detail about the problem:

"If there's one thing that makes online sellers and marketplaces happy, it's an increase in traffic on their website - unless it's caused by a bug that has the potential to harm the website's ranking in Google."

    *sigh*

    From the article linked to:

"Because Google penalizes websites with duplicate content in search results, this was cause for major concern."

    Um, nope.

    Fail.

You are the first one I've heard say/imply that duplicate content on the same website is okay (hope I'm getting your meaning okay.) Are you sure you aren't confusing duplicate content on the same website with duplicate content on other websites?

        Oops yes I was.

However, the article also said the site in question had reported no drop in search results, so...

It may not be an issue and may be an issue. But one quote in the article they were theorizing Google wouldn't crawl these duplicate pages and wouldn't be an issue.

        Anyway...

You need to pay attention to feeds too particular twitter - you should cache your comments...

I have noticed performance issues if the site is trying pull in say for example live stats for example number of likes or recent comments if the service isnt available it can cause your site to be constantly loading depending how it's been coded

I've also noticed this issue with link share too
