Is Internet Marketing The Most Popular Occupation These Days?!!

Well, one second ago, while I was having my breakfast and looking through the Warrior Forum site, it just occurred to my mind. What percentage of US citizens are actually engaged in internet marketing?

It seems to me, around every seven out of ten people are internet marketers and they call themselves 'internet entrepreneur'. What do you think?

P.S. I was so lazy that I didn't do the research and just popped my question in here.

I have to say no. Although I am not from the US I don't know anyone (from my direct friends), that is an IM-er.
Do you have many friends that have become IM-ers since you've known them?

Interesting question you asked here, looking forward to the responses.

Actually, this might be because of the fact that every friend that I make on the internet, whether Facebook or other place, most of them are into internet business. That makes me come to that conclusion (although a skewed one...ha ha).

Internet marketing as a profession is so rare here that when you tell people that you are an internet marketer they have no idea what you're talking about. Most people think of it as "too easy" to make any serious money online.

Of course it is growing, but still a very small minority.

Where I have noticed signficant growth is in small business - chiropracters, real estate, consultants, etc...are now feeling the time is right to expand their business on the internet.

Many were avoiding all-out internet marketing, but now see the benefit which drives some growth.

This is exactly why i have chosen the Offline Marketing Niche....

People struggling with CPA and various other niches may only make $100 -$500 per month... but taking that same knowledge to do CPA, and applying it to Dentists, Chiro's, etc...

          Priceless....

I haven't made less than $1600 per week since I started offline marketing. Actually.... that is a really really part time work low number... but is the lowest.

I generally do about $7,000 but whatever....

Can't comment about the percentage of Internet Marketers in U.S but, in other parts of the world its gaining importance as far as my understanding is concerned. the number of Internet users are rapidly increasing daily & more and more businesses are shifting online to cut down their expenses, all this leads to hike in demand of Internet marketing professionals.

everybody likes to work from the comfort of their homes, so far my experience tells me that its much easy to make money offline then online unless you are a geek and into business from a long time.

I think Amir's guess is closer to the real number. I don't have any frineds that are involved in IM (not counting the people I met in these type of communities). I think when it comes to internet, most people like to be a consumer than an enterprenuer.

There are 300,000,000 (311,204,000) people in America. 10% would be 30,000,000 people. 300,000 is only 0.1% and if there was only about 1000 very successful IMrs on WF that would be about .0003% of Americans are successful IMers and on WF. Very rough estimations here but maybe that gives you an idea.

Maybe not 7 out of 10 US citizens...
but 7 out of 10 SOHO's might be more accurate.
(although it sounds high even for SOHOs)

(SOHO is an acronym for Small Office, Home Office. The term is usually used in referring to small businesses and home-based businesses as a market segment. It is also used to describe a type of working environment. Source: smallbusinessnotes.com/small-business-resources/definition-of-soho.html)

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

Don't think 70% somehow. Just think like how many of your friends or family are internet marketers (not the people who have become your friends via internet marketing.) For me I checked my facebook and 3 including me out of 450 people. Therefore: 0.006 are internet marketers. x 100 = 0.6% Still to high I think.

All I can say is this.

95% of the people who are "trying" to make money online make a very part time income every month. ($100-$500)

The other 5% ( vendors and super affiliates) are all making 5-7 figures per year and some of them are even making 5-6 figures per MONTH.

Because we're surrounded by “Internet Marketing” it seems like everyone is doing it.

However (I think) most people simply aren’t interested in making money from home. They'd rather be Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Scientists, etc.

Then there’s all the work a person must put in to be successful. As far as I know, most people give up before they're anywhere near “success.”

I agree, when you get out of the IM circles it's amazing how many people know nothing about internet marketing.

Even the most basic things (for those that know what they're doing) such as.

organic listings, autoresponder, squeeze page, one time offer etc.

        True.

Although I think anyone can be successful, there's something of a learning curve before they even begin. (Understanding all the terms, methods, etc.)

An easy way to look at this would be through similar comparisons from other times...

    In the 1780's...
How many people are printers vs. how many people just read the news?

    In the 1880's...
How many people are ranch owners vs. how many people are just cowboys for hire?

    In the 1980's...
How many people manufacture computers vs. how many people just use computers?

And then... of those printers and ranchers and manufacturers, how many can grow a business to the point of thriving vs. how many barely eke out a living or give up in failure?

    True success takes work.

Often the best printer produces beautiful work - but can't sell enough advertising...

The best rancher takes excellent care of his herd - but can't get the best price at auction...

The best computer manufacturer makes great hardware - but can't get enough market penetration...

You know what they say... "If it were easy, anyone could do it." Doing it properly has value for the same reason Platinum has value: It's not commonly available to just anyone.

It's very easy to have a warped and distorted perception of internet marketing if all you're basing it on is this forum. In reality, only a very small percentage of Americans even want to be involved in internet marketing - talk to the average Joe on the street, and their initial impression will be that this is a scammy and scummy business.

It depends on what you include in "internet marketing" ...I sell print and direct mail...via direct mail. I now have an online presence....so I use "the internet" as an additional way to market.

Many companies and individual professionals have an online presence and market online.

If you mean internet marketing as in getting a commission for selling someone elses product, or selling information created by you or otherwise, etc. ...just pushing buttons and not having to work with or negotiate with live people...

I'd say that percentige is microscopic like Amir suggested. - It still equates to thousands of people, but microscopic compared to the total number of people doing business.

There's probably more gymnasts or belly dancers or rat catchers than internet marketers. Reminds me of a stat about LA - there are 90,000 waitresses/barmen there who all claim to be actors. Claiming you are something and actually being something are very different things.

I gotta say I don't think IM is all that popular at all. I live in an area of over 100k people and can honestly say I've never ran into another IM'er outside of a conference. In fact, the only conference I ever attended locally I didn't meet a single person earning money online. I just met a lot of people wanting to make money online.

I'd say that in reality 95% of people who say they are IM'ers don't many ANY money at all. Most IM'ers are actually customers and nothing more of the real IM'ers. They buy product after product looking for that "secret" method to making it all happen.

Hopefully one day people wake up and realize making money online is totally legit but just like anything worth while in life there is some work involved.

          Cheers,

I would say no, not by a long shot.

Most popular occupations in terms of numbers are either going to be something like being a cashier in a grocery store or retail store or possibly something in the medical field, for sheer numbers.

For salaried positions, maybe something like HR, as any company needs HR people.

As for most popular work where you're working for yourself, which is what we are all doing here, I would say it's still not IM maybe even something like MLM! I see Scentsy people everywhere! Or maybe being an accountant/CPA or something like that could be the most popular, as again it's something every business needs, or should need. Perhaps real estate, as well, but of course that industry has been hard hit ever since the crash.

Whatever the case, I am sure you will find IM very far, far down the list!

I don't think it is as big of a percentage as it seems. I know I talk to people daily who have no idea what I do. I even worked for a company selling internet education leads to schools and my fellow employees had no idea about internet marketing, driving traffic, landing pages, etc. I had to help teach them what they were selling and how our company was getting those leads.

Entrepreneurs make up a relatively small percentage of the workforce, and "internet marketers" make up a small percentage of entrepreneurs, so I'd say it's a pretty low number. Running into a lot of people who sell stuff online probably just reflects the circles you run in. It's like if you hang out in a mining town, you might get the impression that mining is a really popular occupation, but it really just reflects the people that you come into contact with a lot.

99% of most people that do not have the monopoly fail

and 1% of the top are insanely successful - i.e. the big wigs of IM. Bigger lists and more contacts.

I think the percentage is waaaay lower. I Look at it this way since I live in Illinois:

A healthy percentage of IMers at least have amazon affiliate accounts right?

    Illinois population: 12,830,632

Some friends of mine opened an office in China selling used computer equipment.
