A lot of the themes I buy which are from ThemeForest.com usually go around $30-40. But the reason they go that cheap is because the seller isn't limiting the amount of people he/she is selling to.

If I wanted somebody to make a custom design just for me with unique functions/designs/etc, I would pay a few $100 if the person and the job was right. But also, I would only do this if I couldn't find a premium theme already on the internet. All themes can be customized to your liking which is why I don't usually worry about people using the same theme as me.

I mean a theme that would be sold only once. Would you pay 150$ for a ready theme?

What kind of functionality would it have? Or are you talking about a standard theme but just with a unique design?

Could you give some examples of which functionality you mean?
      Thanks

For example - I happily paid for Classipress because it has built into it the ability for customers to pay online, make their own posts, be rebilled when necessary, etc. In fact it's a dedicated classified ads listing theme and you'd be hard-put to use it as a regular Wordpress theme.

Similarly I recently set-up a site for a client who'd purchased a Q&A theme. I seem to recall the script and theme were actually separate, but the theme was designed to go with the script and again, it had all the functionality needed to run such a site.

There are many premium themes with a dedicated purpose, such as running a jobs listing site, etc and which have all the necessary functions built-in.

I've paid anywhere from $5(which was crap) to over $1,500 which I then parlayed into a 5k sale to a corporate client at the time.

Just a "unique design" is not much value to me. I can take almost any existing theme out there and make it "unique" with a few changes and tweaks.

Functionality and customer support are way more important. I need the theme to continue to work when there are WP updates, so I need a theme company that will be there for me long after the initial sale.

I'd expect to pay between $800 and $2000 for a high quality unique theme.

It would really depend on how it looks, how optimized it is, how CSS/XHTML-compliant it is, how truely unique the appearance is, and how visually appealing it is.

We've gone through 2 WP themes for our hosting site. The first was a "premium" wordpress theme which cost $150. Once we got it and set it up, we discovered how poorly coded it was and it was a real headache.

Then we found a nicer looking theme that doesn't have nearly as many problems, looks nice, and integrated perfectly into our billing system template system. The template was selling for $50, I would have paid several hundred for it without question if I knew how good it was.

Some have paid thousands for really dynamite unique themes. I would expect a lot but would pay hundreds for one.

Well, it depends. I would be capable of paying more if the theme would have some special unique functions, but generally, about 150-200$ for it.
