Business Name Too "Childish"?

Hey Warriors,

I have finally decided to make my business "official". I'm still looking at the advantages to becoming a sole proprietor vs. corporation vs. parternship, etc. But, that is NOT what advice I am looking for (although it would be appreciated ).

I am looking for help deciding a name.

One that I really like, but may be seen as too childish is:
Blue Monkey Media

I think the name can be very brandable and have a great mascot (I'm thinking a purple elephant :p).

My company is currently just a series of affiliate websites that generate some passive income. But, in the future, I am looking toward drop shipping and possibly selling website design and SEO to local businesses.

What do you think of the name?

I would like something with "Media" in the name if you happen to have any more suggestions.

Thanks!

Lots of companies have childish names, but you look pretty young so not sure if that would work against you for someone hesitant to hire you. But still, if you can deliver results, I'm sure they won't care.

I like it! (and I don't think it's childish at all)

Plus, there's a built in visual, which is an awesome way to start a brand image. lol

I like it, the name itself is a purple elephant. People will remember it and it will stand out. If you go networking it's also a great conversation starter.. "So where did the name Blue Monkey Media come from?", "What's a Blue Monkey?" etc

Nothing childish about Blue Monkeys. I like the name Blue Monkey Media. Has a good ring to it.

    Hi Mike,

First, I suggest that if you incorporate, that you do so as an LLC (limited Liability Company) which is a form of corporation, but less complicated for accountants (it'll save you accounting fees). Also, "elect" to have your corporation/LLC be treated as a "Sub-Chapter S corporation."

That will allow you and your accountant to decide (each year) if you can save taxes by running the income through the corporation return or your personal return (complicated to explain, so speak to someone or research these issues on the net).

Secondly, I think the business name is fine. However, I'm confused about how the name Blue Monkey and the mascot image of an elephant match-up. Don't they give two different visual images? Won't people have difficulty in associating your company name with your mascot/logo?

If you're going to use the name Blue Monkey, I suggest that you find (or have made) a mascot/logo image of a memorable blue colored monkey. That image will re-enforce remembrance of the company name. Does that make sense, or am I missing something (perhaps you were making a tongue-in-cheek joke)?

Hope that is helpful to you.

    God bless,
    Doc Reed

      Hey Doc,

Thanks for the help. I was looking at becoming an LLC. And no need to explain the taxes to me, I am studying accounting and looking to become a CPA sometime next year

And yes, the mascot IS going to be a blue monkey. Just a little sarcasm as Will pointed out above :p

I like it. I think it's whimsical, not childish. I'm in the media business, and many of the best, most reputable companies that we work with have fun names - I don't think you're going off base.

There is nothing wrong with standing out from the crowd. Go for it I say. It's a good name.

I think you skipped right over the sarcasm... or who knows, maybe I skipped right over yours?

I just created Bluefoot Media, so I love your name. But then that's me.
It's creative and brandable and catchy.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

You beat me to it. Google sounds like a children's game or something.

      I dig Blue Monkey Media.

I like it. I also modified it a bit. Consider:

Big Honkin' Hairy Butted Blue Monkey Media Madness!

That name has a nice ring to it and brings up some interesting visuals.

Seriously, I do like it. But don't get so hung up on a name that you forget the important stuff, like taking action. Good luck.

      I like the name.

Someone posted above that they found someone already using that name, so you may have some research to do.

If you do run into problems, steal an idea from Martha Stewart:

      Blue Monkey Omnimedia...

Just don't shorten it to BM!

The name is fine, just make sure you have a lawyer handy if you decided to file as a corporation. They have a lot more paperwork and you can make a mess of things if you don't know what you're doing.

Just did a search on Google ... better check for trademark at TESS. There are a lot of entries for Blue Monkey Media in Google.
