What would make my website convert better?

I know its a bit on the ugly side.

I'm emberrassed to admit that I have a two year degree in web development and I have an ugly site.

I've mainly sold clickbank products off of there before, and more recently I put up an Articles page (see my signature below) to centralize some of my content from different networks -
YouTube, HubPages, eHow, and more to come.

Edit:
Honestly, I've been having a case of writer's block as far as What to do with this site.

I originally started it as a 'multi-purpose website' - probably not a good route because it lacks focus.

This page on my site is about background checks and the design is much better.

You ain't kidding. That is what is killing your conversion rate, your design. Add some more content. Put a header in. Looks a little messy with the links on top. Thats where I would start.

    best of luck,

There's absolutely nothing on your website man. How do you expect to convert with that? Basically what the people above me said.

Hey your website is not appealing to the viewer at all.its just so blank you need to go to the drawing board and give it some life.

Yes, as Adam and Justin have said you need some content.

Once you have that, a good idea would be to give something
such as a free ebook to give away to visitors.

Something related to your visitors that they would like.
This could be something you purchase quite cheaply with
master resale rights, or you could produce yourself.

It does not need to be a massive ebook, just something
of interest that the visitor would find some value in.

You would need an autoresponder such as Aweber to deliver this.

Then you would build a list up that you could send information to
with links back to your website.

The more times you can get the same visitor to come back to your site
and build up interest, the more likely they are to buy something
    from you website.

If you have a fair number of visitors you could soon build up a
good list and you earnings would increase substantially.

    Hope this helps.

Its not that my website has no content at all.

The front page doesn't link to anything else on my site.

But the articles page (see my signature if you don't know what I'm talking about) links to various articles and videos of mine.

Overall its rather crappy looking. But you can tell that I know a thing or three about web development .

This is a wind up - right????

I clicked on one of the links on your, so called, articles page and just takes me to an iframed hubpage.

Whatever you're on man, I reckon you need to stop smoking it, taking it or otherwise ingesting it!

It's not even possible to see them, though: they occupy only a portion of the screen and there's a great big advertisement blocking them, with no apparent way to close it.

I know nothing about web development, but wouldn't be asking for people's opinions about this. Politeness stops me from commenting further.

How is it possible to have a two year degree in web development and end up with a site like that? Something isn't right here.

Use a free wordpress theme - which will be way better than what you have now - best of all, easy to manage your content in WP.

Were you sleeping all through class for 2 years? That is pretty bad, don't know why you would even post that unless to just get some attention of how bad it looks.

The first step would be to look at other sites and decide what you like about them... then apply your degree skills and revamp it. You know what to do...

Looked at your site. I don't know, you never know what people are up
to, sometimes. Maybe you're just trying to get traffic and/or advertise
    your sig?

Not busting on you, just trying to understand. If you are doing those
    things - whatever.

Don't tell us about school for IM related stuff, nobody is impressed. Sorry.

But it's good if you know how to identify tools and generally know what to
do with them. That's always helpful, and if you learned that in school, then
    it's cool and wasn't a waste.

You do, however, need to learn about market research, website usability,
conversion optimization, some basic copywriting principles will help - your
article format on the right basically blows. (sorry).

On the left, the text (descriptions) are the same color as the background. (??)

Background checks market is so saturated some sites will turn you away at
the door. You can still do it if you want, but since you seem new, you may
want to work in something where you have a fighting chance. Plus... you do
need additional knowledge in other areas.

Straight feedback without concern for hurting your feelings is more important.

(Alexa is far more polite than I'll ever be - so I don't even try... )

      thanks for your detailed response.
I definitely agree that honesty is what's most important - Alexa's response was kind of on the passive aggressive side IMO.

Yes; it was a little - I apologise.

Unwisely, I posted quickly, still feeling frustrated by the apparently unclosable ad blocking so much of the content on your site. It seemed bizarre - and somehow irritating - that someone with a degree in web design could produce something literally "unreadable" and then be inviting opinions about it. The irritation factor got the better of me and I perhaps shouldn't have posted (or should, at least, have been more helpful, as Ken characteristically was). Sorry.

    Hey...

Here's some better detail minus all the technical jargon I used before.

I don't know how you will be promoting your site. But give some thought
    to spreading out your content.

Perhaps take each section of content and flesh it out into a short article,
and then put them on separate pages.

You do not have any admin pages, anywhere, such as contact, terms of use,
    privacy, etc.

Get an appropriate header, but not one so tall that it eats up space above the
    fold.

Recommend spreading out your offers, too, among your pages.

I've seen a very effective site, that does well, in which the contact form was
placed directly underneath the header. The content was below the form. The form
was for getting info or actually doing a search for some data retrieval cpa offer.

    Hope that helps. See ya.
