Personally I prefer an authority site or at least a semi authority site. I don't really like the thin 3 or 4 page (or less) sites, waste of internet space I recon!

In which case, an EMD won't essentially apply, I suppose?!

          EMD = Exact Match Domain

I don't like to limit myself so I do both.

I often have a bunch of sniper type sites (I don't follow Google Sniper though) each based on a different product or keyword, all linking up to my main product site.

I love having authority sites, but I'd be missing out on a ton of traffic if I didn't have my smaller, more targetted sites as well.

      Waste of internet space???

Not when they make you daily sales, your business grows as an affiliate and vendors start to want to work with you more.

Sniper sites was a way I formed some great JV deals with some top CB vendors.

Depends what your overall business goal is i guess. To be an authority site you need a lot of work or get lucky and find and find a niche with loads of traffic and a buying crowd with very little competition.

The problem here is Colin that you knew what you were doing and probably approached it with a view to building relationships and JV's which is great and a proper business model, but many on this forum will just try and chuck links at the sniper sites to get top rankings and complain when it goes wrong.
2012 is a different ball game to when you probably first started out.
        Just my 2 cents.

I prefer to work both an authority and sniper sites .

So , if you can work on both . These would help you for both , short and long term income stream .

But , make sure that you make an in depth research and analysis before you work on any authority site .

Good point to work on both at least you have one that pumps steady cash flow and one that generate cash quickly in a short period of time. The only downside I see with sniper sites is they only have several months or years to live.

I do both and the jury is still out for me.

Personally, I have found that EMDs can get slapped easier, but that was probably because of me.

So far, I have had more success with small authority sites.

One thing I have definitely noticed is that sites that have been around more than a year Google gets much more relaxed with.

It's almost like you are on probation for your first year.

I used to be of the sniper site only mentality....

Until I realized that my "authority site" with 40ish posts was getting posts indexed within about 5 seconds and for non competitive keywords can reach the top of Google fairly fast.

I think in the next few years we'll start to see the sniper site model fade a bit. EMDs are great now, but are they necessarily what a Google search engine user is looking for?

No- they're looking for how to lose 100 pounds in 6 months from someone who knows what they're talking about, not howtolose100poundsin6months.com with 1 page.

Course who knows- maybe Google will start to give sniper sites even more power, but I dont see why they would.

I think Google have added more power to sniper sites. I believe that they're giving the "small guys" a chance as most sites on the top of the search engine you will see an authority site which is not even related to what the searcher is looking for. EG: hubpages, ezine article, so on...

Definitely an authority site, as that is a long term viable business model if it is positioned in the right way and well branded. The other method is more for newbies or at least a number of people (some who may even be on this forum) who are seo obsessed and focussed on the page 1 of google holy grail baloney.
In short one is a potential long term business model and one is one algorithm change away from obscurity.
    You choose

My absolutely love Micro niche sites they are incredibly simple and incredibly profitable if you get the keyword research right.

They are so simple to make and a great passive income to be honest I don't know why more people don't do this as it is so simple just need to put in the work.

This is how I started making money online and is still a large portion of my income.

I do both. The sniper sites bring in a good bit of money, but nothing compared to the authority sites. Having said that, I usually have a much easier time researching topics for an authority site than I do finding a niche for a sniper site because of all the different factors that I look at.

Either way, they're both good money makers.

    Heres some advice though.

Stick to one type of site till you see some kind of results and don't go spending your profit rather re invest the cash back into your business or you will be forever juggling a few bucks here and there.

If you are just starting out then Sniper sites are the way to go, but keep in mind in the beginning choose keywords with extremely low competition as after ranking for a couple of them you will make your first buck and will also gain confidence.

Opposite is also true for example in the beginning if you choose a competitive keyword and you fail to make any money with it, you'll move to the next one and so the vicious circle starts, after failing on couple of projects an aspiring internet marketer loses his confidence.

Start out with smaller things, don't aim for making your first $100, focus on making your first $.

I am speaking from personal experience.
    Hope it helps

    Authority site.

Sniper sites work by basically "gaming" Google. I just don't think that's a stable place to build an income.

It's like building your income on sand, anytime an update comes you're at risk.

I wouldn't sleep well at night knowing that.

It would make sense that starting out at least you go with sniper, get an idea of how to rank for keywords then put what you learned into a more sustainable authority site.

I haven't bought any "sniper site" wso's. Is that essentially the same approach as amazon review sites, with a relatively narrow focus on a niche?

    Deffo Niche sites!
As a newbie I had no idea at all on how to research, build and rank ANY site. Then I ran across a course that taught me to build niche sites and monetize them in a way that I've not seen before or since. I bought the course (not on WF as the ex search engine employee who wrote it won't advertise his course as he doesn't want the whole world doing this stuff) in May and I now have 4 niche sites ranked on page 1 of Google in 4 separate niches and they are all making me money. So I personally will only be producing niche sites from now on. They are just soooooo easy to build and dominate a niche... I guess I was lucky finding out this info before I started down the wrong path!

I prefer the authority site model. I'd rather go into a really profitable niche that I have an interest in than have to try to manage a bunch of smaller sites. It can be a bit much. Besides that, think of how much money you will spend on all those domains you won't ever use. Finally, the longer you work a site, it easier it becomes to outrank other sites in your niche. You don't need a bunch of sites to make good money online -- just one.

To me sniper sites are just very tricky, if you don't know how to pick a good keyword. With an authority site I can explore a lot of content. But that's just me

I have taken a liking to the Google Sniper strategy as well! I just kind of found out about it now because I've gotten into flipping websites. I picked the concept up while studying through Ryan Morans course. Before that I wasn't that familiar with it.
