What Percentage Of Your Customers Need A Download Link Sent Manually?

Is this whole auto-pilot income thing a bunch of hype? For years I thought it was just the nature of the business, but now I'm starting to think it's me.

I'd say that in at least 30% of cases I (or my assistant) needs to send a DL link manually because people can't figure it out. I think this number is WAY too high.

The download link on my RAP script expires after a certain amount of time which compounds the problem (if anyone has a fix for that let me know).

Most of the time it's simple Paypal redirect where they need to just hit the yellow button.

Are you guys wasting this much time sending out links?
What fixes have you come across?

Much appreciated in advance.

No - outsource! Someone else does it for me.

Pay someone overseas $2/hour to do that crap.

    Mike,

You can change the expiration time in your RAP admin panel. I think the default is 48 hours or something, but I've had some products that I've set to two weeks.

Just log in to RAP admin, select your product, then edit your product settings.

    That might help a bit.

I'd say my manual DL links are closer to 10%, though it's still the most common support request.

Have you thought about using 1shoppingcart? Their digital download feature works well and very very few people actually write in looking for the link.

Can't think of much that you can do with PayPal but just last week I put together a bit of PHP that Emails the files to the user. This has decreased support requests a TON. The other thing I'm going to implement is a timed recovery system whereby they can enter name, email address, and order ID and retrieve their download for up to 30 days.

That should eliminate up to 99% of requests. You will still get the occasional buyer who Emails you after months with a 'my computer crashed and I lost everything' story.

    EDIT....

Now that I'm thinking about it... doesn't PayPal send an IPN as soon as the transaction goes through (and regardless of whether or not they hit the download page)? If so, you could pass this to a script and have it Email the files.

It's about time someone stepped up to the plate to tell it LIKE IT IS: MUST READ for ALL IMers

Wow, 30%? That's pretty high. When I use normal PayPal buttons or Clickbank, it's maybe 5-10%.

With DLGuard, it's a lot lower, since the script emails the link even if they don't press all the buttons (as long as they pay). It should be zero, but some people... can't press the buttons as instructed or check their email for the link. Funny thing is that every time I have the script send the link again, they always seem to get it.

This is not something I would outsource- it's only a few minutes a week if that, plus I'd have to train someone, give them access to things I'd rather not, and be concerned about what they were doing. Maybe if I had hundreds of these a day I'd change my mind on that.

Another thing to note, DLGuard's download links won't timeout (like it sounds RAP's do) before the customer reaches the download page.

DLGuard's download counter doesn't start until the customer first sees the download page, so no problems with expiring download links!

    cheers
