What is the #1 reason for failure in Internet Marketing [in your opinion]?

Dear Fellow Newbie and Experienced Warriors,

"Rumor" has it that a large majority of people who start Internet Marketing ventures fail.

My question is:

What do you believe to be the #1 reason that Internet Marketing ventures fail?

If you can't narrow it down to 1 reason, how about the top 3 reasons?

When I say "fail", I mean, failure to achieve whatever goal(s) the Internet Marketer has set for themselves to the point where they wind down their efforts considerably or abandon the venture completely.

And for extra credit:

How can one overcome/avoid these reasons for failure?

I am hopeful that we will all gain some insight into what pitfalls we can avoid and through that achieve greater success in our Internet Marketing ventures!

Thanks for your time!

Lack of perseverance. People unwilling to see something through at the first sign of failure. One of the best quotes I've read came from this board and it was...

"Life's real failure is when you do not realize how close you were to success when you gave up."

To make it in IM, it seems to be that you have to become a "Social Hog", always willing to stand in the forefront.

I don't think the core problem is with persistance or perseverance. Just performing for your audience (subscribers) at a consistant high level of expectation is draining, physically and mentally.

When your livelyhood is dependant on your performance every moment of every day, your bound to crash at some point.

And...let's discuss the fact that your life needs at least some privacy and time to reboot. Those situations are just not exceptible in the IM industry. If you take time off from the crowd, you might as well be on front page news of TMZ.

So, if you can't give up privacy...you just won't make it in the IM industry. So for those introverts, even as much as you know and can do, you don't stand a chance. Not in the IM industry anyways.

For the others, it seems you would have to develope a set of rules to go by that explains when and how you will be accessible and to what extense, IMO, or your public will surely just suck you up.

Instead of saying why they fail here's how to succeed:

Find one thing that makes you decent money and scale it up to a much larger business.

Do not jump to the next shiny-shiny that you see on a thread or in your in box.

Once you have scaled it up look for ways to mass it up. I.E. take it from mom and pops to a major concern.

Then bring in management to work with the out sourcers and look for your next business model.

#1: Failure to Look at IM as a Business
Too many people look at IM as "money making" venture (which is fine, because businesses are supposed to make money) but they don't think of themselves as a business, so they don't have a clearly structured plan. Ask 100 IMers (especially newbies) if they have a business plan with goals and objectives and you'll discover that most do not. Which leaves them susceptible to...

    #2: Shiny Object Syndrome
Too many also hop from idea to idea looking for that one magic "blueprint" or plan or product (or WSO or Clickbank promo) that's going to make the difference. Kind of like gold miners that dig 3" and then move on to the next spot and dig 3" again. Trouble is, the gold is 6' down, not 3" down. The shiny stuff at the top is mostly fools gold. We succeed when we dig in, not when we dabble. Too much dabbling leads to...

    #3: Fear, Procrastination & Perfection
It's a cycle. After too much dabbling and too little focusing, people often hit stagnation. Either they've tried so many things (dabbling) that they're afraid to try anything else because "nothing" works. So they procrastinate. Or they've seen so much (out there) they feel they need to be perfect - to create that one wonder product and it's never ready because it's never good enough in their eyes. (I'm a recovering perfectionist myself. lol)

Anyone can get a domain name and put up a site. Building a business that stands the test of time - that's another animal entirely. It takes perseverance, determination and a side order of moxy. A one page business plan doesn't hurt, either.

I think there is enough information out there to explain that this is a business. And all you need to do is keep the doors open until you find out what you are good at doing.

Then stay focus on what your strong suite is, because what I see is people trying to do too many things at one time. Marketers target those people and they are just going around in circles.

Well, until one day a light comes on and you figure it out. The internet is great for lead generations and profit are made on the back-end.

    #1) Unrealistic Expectations

For me it seems that many people who are new to IM see it in a rather naive way, as if IM is something where you do not need to do anything and you can "easily" make money just by pressing a button.

Reality is that IM needs a LOT of knowledge, skills, WORK, motivation and TIME.

I think many people don't realize this, maybe mislead by the false marketing lies of so called "Gurus".

What do you believe to be the #1 reason that Internet Marketing ventures fail?

      Procrastination.

How can one overcome/avoid these reasons for failure?

First of all, study the 13 principles in Think and Grow Rich. Hill recommends that you read that book 3 times and do the homework. By your 3rd reading, you will have begun to master the art of: Decisions, Persistence, use of the Subconscious and use of the Sixth Sense (just to name a few). All of these are needed to program yourself for success and riches.

Second, decide one area of IM on which to focus. Focus on that area for 30 consecutive days. Do not buy WSOs during those 30 days (save your money). Seek out a MasterMind group and commit to it. Look for ways that you can share some skill that you have ('tis better to give than to receive). Ask questions in the WF.

I find from consulting with students and clients that lack of focus is a major factor. There are so many bright and shiny objects floating around, and there's always something new and attractive that beckons to the newbie (and even those who have been around the block several times).

Instead of focusing on just one thing and getting results with it, the distractions tend to pull people in too many different directions, and this is counterproductive and rarely result in anything good happening.

I can't help but wonder how many of these responses are actual problems the individual posters had to overcome, or are struggling to overcome.

From my own perspective, I can say that procrastination and insufficient marketing are key issues related to lack of success. I frequently think I've done a lot of work and it's always a shock to discover otherwise. It's probably because there are so many things to do, much of it unmeasurable without an actual time sheet.

But there's something else that few mention: an inability to present the offer effectively to prospects.

Many marketers will tell you that failure comes from not choosing good products and poor copy-writing. Trying to promote products that are either just poor quality or don't address a person's needs effectively will certainly lead to failure.

If you do not have a good "feel" for people, how they think, how they perceive things, and what triggers their buying decision, then you will have difficulty communicating with them and getting the sales.

Some people have an innate knack of knowing exactly what to say, how to say it, and how to motivate people. (The socializer, comes to mind.) You can spot them by reading their sales copy and their marketing materials. You immediately feel a "connection" with them and keep reading. By the time you're done, you've already decided that you like and trust this person enough to buy their product.

They know exactly how to communicate to get the results they desire, and they do it in all of their marketing.

You could say that's a mark of good copy writing, but if you don't have that conception of society, you will struggle.

Doing to much research and not getting stuff out there is definitely #1. You have to have sth and then improve upon it.

And improving is very important. You will make a lot of mistakes. Then you read something and say: Damn, I should ve read that earlier. Well, you did not. So apply it now.

Also the pressure puts some down. You start off thinking to yourself that you are going to make millions in just a few weeks. But as with everything a lot of expertise is required in IM. A friend of mine recently got laid off. Now he wants to become an entrepreneur and start IM. Problem: He has never done anything in this direction... And having no income at the moment it will be a tough time for him as he has to learn everything from the beginning

When I finally decided to quit my job and set up membership sites, I worked my ass off. I was driven to succeed, i just do not what drove me to do this, but I had the love and support from my family...and that helped.

I love that saying ''action breeds results'' and nothing can be more futher than the truth there. Take action and see little results and just work from there, that is how I turn a silly little membership site into a massive amount of membership sites. personally going off my own experience:

    1. overwhelm of information
    2. procrastination
    3. lazyness
    4. Taking action

    Solutions to overcome these problems

    1. Just learn one thing at a time, if its squeeze page, learn about squeeze page, etc....
    2. set yourself deadlines on a calendar... and make sure you met those deadlines...
    3. kick yourself out of lazyness... set a timer on your computer to stop you from messing around online.. go gym get active...
    4. JUST DO IT !!! set up a squeeze page, get your stuff online regardless what it looks like... its not perfection...

i learned the hard way and long way... 6 months i have messed around until i realised my problems now im getting stuff done !! and begning to slowly see results... but this is my own experience everyone is diefferent but the above are the most common..

Failure is when people try to jump from one method to the next without putting in some time into it, and then later give up altogether.

The number one reason for failure in nearly all businesses I've seen has been lack of planning; particularly regarding core skills, marketing, capitalization and expenses. Many jump in without much thought or idea of what they're getting into, much less even realizing what is required to succeed.

Goals? That's one of the reasons for failure. They don't set goals. Not really. Their goal is weak. It's usually, "I want to make money on the internet."

Fine. Here's a fiverr. Congratulations. You made money online.

Take someone starting an SEO business, for example. It's a really simple formula. It's mostly step-by-step and well laid out by others.

So a real goal would be, "I want to secure $12,000 of new contracts during the first quarter of 2011."

That's really only a moderate income of $3,000 per month. In the offline world, it's very do-able. With that goal in place, they would spend more time emailing potential clients, following up by phone or skype, and making appointments to close deals.

Without that goal, they'll sit at their computer and keep searching for some way to make more money.

So, I would add this to the list...

Failure to Set Proper Business Goals

    Let's keep this simple:

    Failure to follow through.

If one possesses and employs a fairly aggressive work ethic (as well as working "smart") it's guaranteed that you will make enough money to support your family in this business.

Also: another good way to fail: screw your customers over. Always deliver a quality product and think about the quality of your product first before coming up with all the catchy, slick sales lines that don't add up to squat.

Hanging out on marketing boards, checking your irrelevant thread or threads all day rather than actually doing anything productive. Not sure if it's number one but it sure is up there.

I'll repeat what others have already stated...FAILURE TO TAKE ACTION!

You can dream it all you want. But if you don't take action...you'll NEVER achieve it!

Thinking it's going to be easy to make money online quickly without any experience.

This isn't for slackers or anyone who only wants to give little effort. You better be ready to give 100% and commit to it fully.

My 2 reasons why people fail with internet marketing:

      1) Procrastination, one of the biggest causes of their online failure.

      2) People do not succeed because they don't promote/market their business in any way. Also, people fail with internet marketing because they don't do paid advertising.

This is so true. Sometimes, the free and/or low cost IM strategies you employ when starting out aren't amenable to scaling up. As with any business, you'll grow fastest when you reinvest some of your earnings in the business to generate a positive ROI, and paid advertising is definitely one option that can help with scaling it up.

Time isn't free, and when you have money to invest, many times paid advertising can be a more effective use of your resources than "free" methods which burn up too much time!

Lack of focus and quick rich mindset. You have stick toone method and it needs process. There is n one can build business overnight. You need to be expert in one thing.

I agree with so much of the above that I'm not going to add to the lists of reasons people fail but rather provide a couple of tips:

Set out a written weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual business plan - a few clear sentences will do. In fact, the clearer and more concise the better.

Set daily written tasks and goals but do these one at a time. As you complete each task, the sense of achievement spurs you on to the next and by doing them one at a time you learn to overcome that desperate sense of overwhelm that causes most marketers to fail.

Review your progress at the end of each week/month. Learn from your mistakes and re-calibrate that plan.

OK, that's more than a couple but I do always love to over-deliver (!)

Hope that helps someone out there and a very happy Easter to everyone!

  • Definitely lacking persistence and perseverance. If you just keep working on it day after day you will eventually get results. Think back to anything in life that you have stuck with for 6 months or longer. I bet you saw huge gains whether it was fitness, learning a skill etc. The applies to online marketing. Many people throw in the towel after a month because they didn't make any money. Just keep at it.

I think procrastination and not taking action can be a factor, but often there is a problem related to insufficient knowledge. However, this can start the whole cycle of seeking for more infoproducts and buying more courses rather than applying what one knows etc. Nonetheless, sometimes there are reasons for failure related to partial understanding. For instance, a site I had a few years ago did not do well till I did some on-page seo. I was only concentrating on backlinks for it. Others will say that their income didn't improve till they started writing a better article resource box or changed their adsense placement etc.

I would say that it is usually a combination of not taking action, information overload as well as missing some pieces of knowledge that creates the failure.

I believe that all of what was said were good reasons.

For many of us, including myself, it may be not believing in one's own IM dream to pursue it in spite of anything. As humans, we may be constraint in many things like: time, money, family, health, etc.

Those who succeed would have first believed it possible and persisted in spite of challenges. These will include being single minded and focus on that IM dream.

Having a dedicated mentor/coach would help in bringing one back into focus.

Wishing all IMs the best in their IM pursuit (including me). :-))
