Having a different site name and domain name

Is there any common wisdom on how important it is to have the same domain name and site name? I've realized I need to make a change, and I came up with domain name that is going to help me greatly with SEO, but it will be different than my site name. If I use my site name the same as my domain name it will take me a lot longer to reach the top of google for my keywords so I want to go with this other name.

Any thoughts? Do people see a problem in going this route?

I would rather go with my keyword in the domain name as well as keyword in the H1 header. This will improve the image of your site far better than just any name in the H1 header.

    Hope this helps!

Yes, your domain name should also be reflected in you site name, not only for consistency but also for SEO purposes.

If you can't change your site name then go with the different names. However, I don't see why you could not just rename your site as well.

Thanks for your help on this Margy. Here is my situation:

My site name is: "Otherword MyKeywords" and I currently have the same domain name, otherword-mykeywords.com. (the dash is just for illustration purposes)

My target market keywords are in the second set of two words.

However, it's possible to change my domain name to: mykeywords-otherword.com,
but I would have to keep my site name as "Otherword MyKeywords".

Then my keywords would be a the beginning of the domain, which is good, but my site name and domain name would be in reverse order, and I don't know if that has any negative effect?

I'm wondering if that's a good or bad idea. Maybe google doesn't like it, I don't know...

If you look at my site in my signature you can see what I mean, the keywords being 'anger management'. Sorry for being so abstract, I just don't want to plaster my domain name all over the post...

Unless you are in buying dropped domains business than the site name and domain should be same or at least similar.
