So I sent out an email campaign using shared hosting....

I have a couple lists with Aweber but this is an adult list that I built with CoolerEmail (a smaller autoresponder service that told me they accept adult/pornographic content but then pulled the rug out from under me once I started to get rolling (for no good reason by the way, and that's a whole 'nother story). While we do plan on getting a VDS I decided to roll the dice and see what results I could get with shared hosting. I used an automated mailing software to send out a follow up email (with a link to a free video) to 1153 confirmed opt-ins. I didn't necessarily expect any kind of results and I ended up getting a 152 Unique Opens (13% open rate, and 136 clicks (13% click through rate). Also I had 9 people unsubscribe.

My questions are:

  1. Can I reasonably conclude that a lot of these emails were dumped in the spam folders and that is what is causing the low open rate?
  2. Is finding the inbox the primary problem with trying to use shared hosting or is it issues the hosting company will have with a large list and their email limits?
  3. Should I expect better numbers just from switching to a VDS alone?
  4. Is there a steep learning curve with regard to a VDS vs being used to shared hosting platforms?

Also, the list is highly targeted toward it's traffic source.

I realize this wasn't the most thought out part of this email marketing venture, but we really just wanted to jump in and see what happened. It's more of a side project.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and answers.
