Need Help With Affiliate Cloaking

I have read many post on affiliate cloaking, but I am still very confused on the steps that I must take in order for this to happen. I am extremely new to this, but I have a product I want to promote now. I don't have a website that is related to the product, so would I be able to cloak without a website?

i think what you mean is a link shortener.
    Try tinyurl, bit.ly .
It will redirect to your affiliate link.

  • If you are talking about the php redirect, you would need a host to store the actual php files on. A free host would work just fine, if that is all you are using it for. Then you can put the link in an email, an article, or whatever.

Thanks a lot for both of your input. I believe Brad is referring to what I'm looking for. Do you happen to know a good free host that this would work with? What would be the benefit between a paid host and a nonpaid host? I am planning on getting a website going today or Monday if that makes a difference.

Since you're planning on building a site, most people would recommend going with the paid host. There are already a lot of threads in this part of the forum that will answer the why's and who's the best. Just use the Search function.

If money is an issue for you at the moment, you can also use the Search function to find 'best free host' or something like that, but off the top of my head I used Awardspace for a number of years and was very happy with them.

        Best of luck to you.

Ok, i thought you don't wish to get a webhosting, so i advised you a shortener instead..

I will advise you to get a paid webhosting.. Anyway, if you need the file to redirect, you can easily setup using this.

      Benson,

So you are saying I don't actually need a host to cloak an affiliate link? How do you go about doing this without a host? Please forgive me if I am still a little confused as I am still new at this, but I actually believe I was trying to accomplish what you first mentioned. I don't want to have to deal with a host if I can avoid it. I just want to post an affiliate link to some e-mails that I have of interest. This will not be affiliated with or common to the website I plan on creating.

      Thanks,

      Dee

I think you don't need to pay for hosting I would recommend godaddy.com

You can buy only the domain and you can forward that domain to your affiliate link. You can also create subdomains to forward them to the link that you want.

For example, you buy easylearnings.info for less than 1 dollar and you forward that to your affiliate page. You can add up to 80 subdomains the addresses go like http://something.easylearnings.info and you can forward that subdomain to your affiliate page.

    yes Ricardoplehn is right.

You can redirect using a domain name.
Webhosting is only necessary if you want to have files hosted and working for you.

But if all you want is to redirect only without showing your real affiliate link and you don't mind how the link will look like, a simple link shortener will do what you want for free.

Ok. Thanks to both of you for the help. Benson, you gave me some information on using the link shortner earlier. Could you please let me know or refer me to the steps I would need to take to do so?

    Simple guide using bit.ly

    1. Go to bitly | Basic | a simple URL shortener
    2. Paste your affiliate link into the blank field
    3. Press 'Shorten'
    4. A link will be created under 'Shortened links'

You have cloaked your affiliate link now.. Use the link you got in step4 to promote the product, whenever people go through the cloaked link, it will be tracked.

For example, this link which i created a while ago Yahoo! will redirect to yahoo.com

    hope it helps..
    Cheers!

        Benson,

I appreciate the tips. I have created my account and now the only problem that I am encountering is the the words I want the link to say. It shows up as bit.ly/ when I place it in the mail. How do I make it like the Yahoo link that you did. Does that take some coding? I looked through the bit.ly site, but no luck.

        Thanks,

        Dee

Ok everyone. I hope this can help some of the new people out there. I was originally trying to figure out how to cloak an affiliate link when sending an e-mail. Now, after tons of time trying to figure that out, I feel pretty silly to say the least. It is quite simple.

          1. Type the word you want to be clicked (i.e. CLICK HERE)
          2. Highlight those words
          3. Click on the insert link image that is generally located directly above your text box next to font size and color. (Just like on here for example)
          4. Paste the affiliate link into the insert link box
          5. Press ok or enter and you are done (some gives you the option to test link if you would like)
